Remembering MetalUnderground member Jason "DeathInEye" Bradford - 1987 - 2016

Two days ago, I was sent a message on Facebook by a former member of this website, Kalis Wrath, breaking the news that another of our own, Jason Bradford, perhaps better known to regular visitors of this site as DeathInEye, had passed away the night before at the age of 28, having slipped into a coma a few days prior. As those who knew him will remember, Jason was a both an awesome mind and a spiritual warrior, who excelled as a poet. Every time he'd write poetry, or even discussed it, I felt like I was being educated. Like many other people, poetry was something I would either dismiss outright or shrug off as something anybody could do but I had no idea how much structure and thought went in to the process of crafting poems until Jason talked about them.

There was something else about Jason, something which he dealt with his entire life, which was his struggle against Muscular Dystrophy. This horrible affliction would be too much for most of us to bear, but Jason wasn't like most of us. I rarely knew him to talk about it and when he did, it was either in good humour or just as an aside. I remember what must have been ten years ago now, discussing with him education in Great Britain, because the British education system was better for his needs he said, and true to his word, he did arrive on this little island to study at the University of East Anglia. Another fond memory I have of Jason was a time when people were changing their Facebook pictures to their celebrity lookalikes for one reason or another and Jason, tongue firmly in cheek, said to the effect of, "Well, who else could I pick other than Stephen Hawking?"

Jason was a brave man, an intellect to behold and what many of our regular members would have described as a "metal warrior." He not only taught me about writing and poetry, but also others with his role as a creative writings teacher to undergraduates. His work made it to stores as well, including Amazon, who are at present, sadly out of stock of his debut collection of poetry, "The Inhabitants."

It would not be right to post an article about Jason without mentioning his amazing mother Shirley, who was also his carer. She looked after him his entire life and showed a tremendous love to her son with admirable strength, both of which could be seen in Jason and were characteristics we hope to see in every parent, though not all can reach her standards.

His tragic passing, which coincided with the birthday of another of our fallen friends, Gary "Godlike" Snyder, will be marked today in Wilmington, North Carolina at five in the evening with a celebration of life at Wilmington Funeral and truly, in Jason there was so much to celebrate. His wonderful friends and colleagues have set up a memorial page at Wilmington Cares, as well as announcing plans to help his family with costs, with any extras going towards a scholarship programme, the details of which can be found here.

Wonderful remembrance. Jason was an amazing young man. Never heard him say Why Me? He just went with the flow. Yes Shirley was such a fantastic mother. He could not have asked for a better one.

I remember him talking openly about how his screen name reflected the reality of his health situation and he fully accepted it. The Metalunderground crew won't forget you.

What a beautiful eulogy, brother Oz. I hated to have to give you the bad news, but I knew you and everyone else would have wanted to know. He was a beautiful soul we will all greatly miss. It was an honor to know him beyond this site. His memory will live forever in our hearts. May he now rest in peace, and be free from his wheelchair. My heart goes out to his mother who I'm sure is beside herself.

Gone but not forgotten Jason, I always remember how impassioned you were about your thoughts on music and you were always an equal on MU, no MD ever held back your great metal spirit here. Say hi to big dog Gary for us all.
