Phil Anselmo On Dimebag Darrell: "The Best Of The Best"

Photo of Damageplan

Band Photo: Damageplan (?)

Philip Anselmo's (Superjoint Ritual, Down, ex-Pantera) friend "J" has posted the following message on the official Down forum in regards to the tragic death of Damageplan/ex-Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:

"I don't have a big official statement. I do have a lot of inside knowledge on the Pantera feud from Philip's side and tonight he gave me the green light to let everyone else in on what I know. He trusts me to do this, and I take 100 percent responsibility for anything that is inaccurate, but I'm confident you all know I'm not going to touch on this subject unless it's from the heart. He didn't even give me any specifics except for the final part of this post... he just wants me to tell people what I know to be true.

"Philip loved Darrell like a brother, always. They accomplished things together that most wouldn't even dare to dream. None of us can know what it's like to be riding such a big machine, it changes the face of music and brings joy millions of people's lives around the globe. The rewards are big, but the stress is unimaginable if things don't go perfectly. Yes, Pantera broke up and there was a lot of shit-talking through the media. There are two people on this board who would periodically ask me about what's going to happen with Pantera in the future. I told them each time that I don't know when, but I'm 100 percent sure that we will see Pantera together again. I told them that when Pantera does get back together, you will know somebody who never lost faith, not for a second. Why did I tell them this? Because I know Philip loves those guys and when he was ready, he would reach out to them and try to make it work again. I had the feeling that one morning (afternoon maybe), all the 'Cowboys From Hell' boys would just roll out of the rack and say 'Let's go!'

"Of all the time I've spent with Rex and Philip, I never badgered them about Pantera, but the subject did come up every once in a while. As for Rex, he would refer to the state of things simply as 'silly nonsense.' All I ever got out of Philip was something like 'Nyaaaa... I just don't feel like sitting down and writing Pantera riffs right now.' ... and that's it! No crazy accusations, name-calling, or carrying on. As a matter of fact, in the middle of all the heat, Philip described Vinnie as 'the perfect drummer' and that Vinnie could drum more perfect than a drum machine if he so chose. What he said of Dime, he also repeated tonight. 'The best of the best.'

"It's sad that the media would irritate the situation so much. Countless times, Kate and I would listen in on Phil doing interviews. Always, always, always, the jackals wanted Pantera dirt. Sometimes Philip would give it to them, sometimes he would not. However every single time I was there, he expressed his love for, and wished luck to Vinnie and Dime but that was somehow left out of the final print more times than not. I was at Philip's house a few weeks ago and I informed him that I handle the official Pantera site now, and he asked me if I talked to Dime. I said, 'No, when was the last time YOU talked to him?' With a sigh, he said 'Three years.' Not a 'Fuckin right 3 years' not a 'Yeah three years and it's gonna be three more'... but the dude was genuinely disappointed about the situation. I could tell... the time to patch things up was drawing near.

"There's more I want to share, but it's almost 5AM right now, and I just managed to hold myself together long enough to get that out.

"Philip isn't hiding out or waiting for the right moment to speak, he's in Texas right now searching for answers to this tragedy the best he can. There was one thing he asked of me, that I humbly bring to you all:

It's really sad that they'll never get the chance to straighten sh** out with Dime. Hopefully this will stop those ugly rumours that Anselmo had anything to do with the shooting. It was a lone lunatic, nothing more, nothing less.

And he knows that. The world should know that. SO PHYSICALLY, OF COARSE, HE DESERVES TO BE BEATEN SEVERELY"

"I have a devoted following that would do anything for me! Anything that I say."

Im not putting any blame on Phil, but it seems that he is very well aware of the kind of followers he has. Thus, I feel he should always be more carefull with the type of sh** he says. For all I know, that statement may have sounded like a command in Nathan Gale's eyes.As of now, the most likely possible motive for the murder is the Pantera break up.I dont think Phil had a direct role in this, but I do believe that his words may have pushed Nathan Gale to do what he did.

the statements are didgy but i don't think that phil had anything to do with it, well, the evidence suggests that. especially that nathan gale though that pantera was stealing his music. that says lunatic and leaves it at that.

what i think is weird though, is that this happened on December 8th.
That was the day John Lennon was murdered. In some way, this tragedy is our metal "John Lennon" Not just the coincidnece of the date, but the fact that everyone looked up to Dime, saw him as a friend, colleague, and drinking buddy.

and the police should confiscate Gale's PC, they can check if he looked at that page by reading his history and hard drive or reasearched anything on the band, handguns, etc.

I believe that whatever Phil had said in the past is just that, the past. There were definately some feelings of anger there, I don't think he had it in him to hate Dime. No one could hate Dime, except for one f***ing lunatic and he's gone now.

Nobody really knows when a loved leaves you, I can only believe that if Phil even thought about Dime leaving us, he would have made up instantly. But those are just nice thoughts. I would like to see Phil make a statement and really see where his head is. R.I.P Dime, you are an amazing talent and person who will be sorely missed.

Maybe we would have seen Phil straighten things out sometime
in the (near?) future...not now. What the f***??- I definitely agree with you.
Ive read a couple interviews with him, and they never did mention anything
about Dimebag Darrell or Vinnie Paul. It was mostly sh**-talking..maybe we
will see a statement soon, in a magazine or on the internet.
I never got to see Pantera or Damageplan live, but I watched the
MTV2 tribute to DImebag, and some of the videos were clips of live
shows. The level of intensity was insane, and that was the in the videos.
Dimebag put some much effort into whatever he did, and he
never let up. Ahh. I have to use the past tense whenever speaking about
Dime nowadays..But he lives on through everything he ever did in life.
R*I*P* DIMEBAG- WE LOVE YOU MAN, YOU ARE MISSED, YOU ARE

Myself and Pantera fans alike love you man, but you've gotta pull it together. Good luck to you, Phil, may God be with you in this time of tragedy.

My f*ckin' hell...It really makes me sick to be even thinking about this sh**. Why do they always take the best? He did nothing wrong. EVERYONE knows what kind of person Dime was. I am so sorry for you, Vinnie and the Abbott family, as well as the Damageplan family. There is no amount of comfort or sorrow that anyone can feel to help you through this. Please know that we all love you very much, and I know that everyone who ever lived, played, listened to, died for, and felt metal music - namely the music DIme and Vinnie made - is reaching out to hold your hands, and let you know that they love you....Thanks for all the great years Dime, please rest easy.....

i'm convinced that the freako had read and was strongly influenced by that article from two weeks prior where Phil blasted Dime. That's not to say that the freako wouldn't have eventually gone out and killed at another place/time, it was probably inevitable, but freako got his 15 minutes of fame because he killed celebrity. Perhaps authorities should worry less about marijuana control (and other petty drugs)and instead worry more about gun control and maybe freako wouldn't have been armed when he stormed into that club.

It is sad that someone with such talent, giving personality, and drive is taken from the world. I'm certain that Phil was only venting in the article to make him look like a bada** and to make Dime look like an a**hole. I don't think deep down that he truly felt that way. These guys were like brothers and brothers say things that they really don't mean. Give Phil a break before someone does something stupid to Phil, Vinnie, or Rex. We cant loose another member of the greatest metal band to stupidity and violence.

The reason why I have no respect for Phil is because I've seen Pantera around 10-12 times live..... and every time I saw them Phil would always connect with the crowd and make a comment. About how, we are all one, (us in the crowd, and them on stage). How we should all love eachother, and be one.

I'm know that Phil loved Dimebag dearly, I can see that. But that's just me....... I have no respect for Phil because I look at all of these neg. comments he made after Pantera broke up, and I see them as him being 2-faced, going off what he (Phil) told Pantera fans at Pantera shows, at the actual concerts. I look at this tragedy as a direct result of the comments he made. Actions speak louder then words....... but there is no action that Phil could take that will make this Pantera fan ever forgive or forget his 2-faced words. Here's a prime example of WHAT I'M SAYING..... The lyrics to the song RISE - "We've got no time to lose
Your news is old news
Hate this, hate me, hate this
Right approach for the wrong
It's time to spread the word
Let the voice be heard
All of us, one of us, all of us
Dominate and take the motherf***ing world

Mass prediction, unification
Breathing life into out lungs
EVERY creed and EVERY kind
To give us depth for strength

Taught when we're young to hate one another
It's time to have a new reign of power
Make pride universal so no one gives in
Turn our backs on those who oppose
Then when confronted we ask them the question
That's wrong with their mind?
What's wrong with your mind?

It's time to RISE" - There you have it "Mass prediction, unification
Breathing life into out lungs" or "All of us, one of us, all of us
Dominate and take the motherf***ing world" - So I would love to ask Phil "WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR MIND" ???????? Goodbye.

PS - You wouldn't catch me dead at a Re-United Pantera.

DO NOT FINGERPOINT, it discredits their passions, and their accomplishments. Darrell is free from this hell, yet we still live in it with the memories he provided us. Speculation is the murder of logic. Everyone loses. When Daryl was murdered, a part of every human around him was taken in an instant. None of you know what any of these people are thinking, feeling, or doing in the wake of this tragedy. I'd be willing to bet that none of you even know Anselmo personally. Even if he is a piece of sh**, or whatever your opinions deduce of his character, none of you have the right to speculate and/or belittle the possibility that he could be in agony over this. Nobody builds a brotherhood, band, and legacy on weakness. They obviously had some powerful love and respect for eachother to begin with. Most of you are kids, most of you probably don't know sh** about metal other than the dogsh** that you lick off the pages of Metal Maniacs. I'll tell you one thing. Grow the f*** up, and recognize that these are human beings just like everyone. They live, they die, and they feel. Just as sure as some of you know that you've said and done some really sh**ty things to people you love. You can rest assured that the only differece is that the entire media isn't begging to dish out the sh** of your life to make a dime.

While I never had the opportunity to meet Daryl personally, I can't help but feel a sense of loss on many levels. He contributed a great deal to the scene, craft, and overall wellness of what we appreciate. I'd like to think that just by simply continuing on with our admiration for Metal, it's all worth something in the end to someone like him. It is an awful thing to happen, and fortunately the world will not be diseased by the mind that created that viscous act.

Vinne, Phil, Rex, Damageplan, and the crew. You're all in my thoughts. I'm a musician, and I know that the circle created in the shadow of this, will be something that signifies the love for your brother.

Phil may have said "best of the best", but what about everything else he said?

First of all. I'd like to say that Dimebag's death is tragic.
And he'll be sorely missed.
I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who want to blame Phil for it.
It is unfortunate that Dimebag would die at the time of their rift.
And after all the sh** that Phil said about it I wish he'd just kept his f***ing mouth shut.
Obviously there are crazy obsessive Pantera fans out there.
Anyone who's seen their home videos would know this.
I think Dimebag's killer should go down in history as the biggest stupid c*** that ever lived.
Back to the rift.
I'm sure everyone at some point in their lives might've fallen out with a friend over whatever.
It usually is over something stupid where both camps think that they're in the right.
It's just that Dimebag and Phil happen to be in the public eye.
And it's not like the media didn't constantly prod them about the whole story.
If you were talking sh** about a former best mate and maybe in the back of your mind , you were maybe planning on reconciling in the future depending on how things went, I'm sure you'd also feel like sh** if that friend were murdered.
Sure, some of the things Phil said were upsetting but Phil hasn't really been known to not speak his mind at any given moment in time.
He is a stubborn person and everyone knows that about him.
I mean it's happened with musicians before where former friends or bandmates got over their differences even after they'd "finalised" the split, eg: Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor.
And after all the sh** that Phil had been through with Dimebag and Vinnie, you can't tell me that he didn't still have affection for them.
No one deserves to die, especially over something as futile as a band possibly not getting back together.
It pisses me off so much.
Obviously now, whatever hope everyone had in Dime and Phil's reconciliation as friends is now f***ed.
But that's due to Nathan Gale.
It is Nathan Gale who is to blame.
It's pointless to alienate and ostracize Phil Anselmo now because that isn't going to bring Dimebag back.
May his passion for music and fun live on forever.

RIP Dimebag- Forever in our hearts. A massive inspiration.

I, and I know, ALL Pantera fans are destroyed by the lose of Darrell. I think its digusting to even think that someone would do this in the first place, but didnt the bastard ever think that good bands usually get back together? IMAGINE WHAT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE!! But more importantly, I wish a peacful morining for his family and most of all Vinnie. Pantera always lit that fuse in me... made me wanna bash anything around, and it was mssed from the second it was broken. I think we all know the side projects are what did it for the downfall of Pantera, but it was bound to surface again. I BED YOU, DO NOT TRY TO REFORM PANTERA! NOT FOR A TRIBUTE OR ANYTHING. Phil, you were my man, and I looked up to you. It really got me down when I read some things you said about the band and members. But who hasn't ever heard of the lead singer who wasn't arrogant. If he was shy and gentle, would you dare say you would've like them? It was part of the appeal... badass S.O.B.'s with attutitudes. IT'S METAL, FOR LORDS SAKSE!! I was deeply disturbed

I can't seem to wrap my mind around this...I wish that I could really love metal again, but it's all so different now. No offense to all of the other great musicians out there. I just don't feel anything in my soul anymore, but I truly hope to one day...Much sympathy and prayer to all of the families and fans who were forever changed by this. I hope this makes people, famous or not, take a second to think before they speak or act. Good luck to you Phil...I pray you can live with your conscience, but people will unfortunately never look at you the same way again. Peace...

Whooped some punk rock a$$ the other night for ya, Dime. It's a shame how I can take my girl to see a show that SHE wants to see, support the f***in' band by being there...and then hear the sons of b****es make jokes about Dime's murder off stage. f***in' sick. Shoved some 101 Proof boot right up their asses.

Rock in peace.

RIP Dime. And after watching phils "statement" .....he seems pretty damn guilty. I will be a PanterA fan always but, I could care less about phils "side projects" and Damage Plan. I think these guys wanted to make heavy metal a reality. Well... It happened. I guess in the world of heavy metal and rap, "it's all fun and games until somebody dies"....... RIP DIME

Are you f*cking sh*tting me? Every other f*cking thing said is a bash on Phil. HELLO, if it wasn't for Phil there wouldn't have been such a successful Pantera. Watch the video, it's pretty obvious he is very sadden and killed inside for what happen to Dimebag, and yet you people still show no compassion what so ever towards Phil. Now I dont know who's responsible for Pantera's break up, but the fact of the matter is they are done. We will always have the memories. And I think deep down Dimebag would be pretty p***ed if he read all this sh*t you people have been talking about Phil.

RIP Dime

I couldn't have said it better myself truly the best and that just doesn't go for dimebag but for the whole pantera experience beginning to f***ing last . The video that phil made is a little too farfetched i mean theres still a lot more money he can make regardless of dimebags death but hey thats life metal will never be the same... first metallica now this???
