Sunday Old School: Crash

As we approach the end of another year, it would seem that Sunday Old School's attempt to expose more metal veterans from across the world has been a success. From Aria in Russia to Moonspell in Portugal, from Channel Zero in Belgium to Mezarkabul in Turkey, we've seen some of the best the world has given the metal genre and heard some of the best music on offer. This week, we'll be continuing this trend by heading to Asia for the first and only time since 2011's column on Japan's, Loudness, to check out a contribution to thrash metal from South Korea, one which had the suitably high impact moniker of Crash.

The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist/bassist, Ahn Heung-Chan, guitar player, Yoon Doo-Byung and drummer, Jung Yong-Wook, in the country's capital city of Seoul and became one of the first groups in the nation to encourage stage diving and hardcore dancing. Their ferocious music and growing, rabid following soon caught the attention of Metal Force Records, a subsidiary of the SK Group, a giant corporation in Korea.

With the backing of a new label, Crash teamed up with producer, Colin Richardson, who had previously worked with the likes of Carcass, Sepultura and Anathema amongst others, giving the album a death metal tinge to their take on thrash metal sound. The resulting record, "Endless Supply of Pain," was finally released in 1993 to good reviews and positive sales, selling over eighty thousand copies that year. It was also notable for featuring a cover of the Deep Purple classic, "Smoke on the Water," which was not received as well as their own compositions, particularly the successful single, "My Worst Enemy."

Crash decided to take their own reins when it came to recording their sophomore effort, self-producing the second album, "To Be Or Not To Be." It showed a more experimental edge to their music, bringing a darker vibe to the table and creating a less accessible, but more adventurous record in the process. Though the album earned them some plaudits, it was to be their last with Metal Force, as they left the company to sign with Seoul Records, who gave them more money and flew them to England to work on a new album.

A new album surprisingly called for an old face and Colin Richardson was invited to produce their third effort, "Experimental State of Fear." Once again, further risks were taken with their sound, this time incorporating more grooves and using samples for the first time. It produced some fan favourites such as "Grattitude" and "Season in Red," keeping their fan base happy and stature growing.

After three albums of blistering music and chance taking, Crash decided to go on something of a break, before signing a new record deal with the Taiwan based label, Rock Records, who released their next album, "Terminal Dream Flow," in 2000, which was once again produced by Colin Richardson. Though the album contained some live staples such as "2019 A.D." and "Apocalypse," the initial reaction to the album was mixed, owing to more melodic singing and the electronic elements being embellished, creating a mixture of metal and drum and bass.

Three years later, the band released their fifth album, "The Massive Crush," which saw the group handle production duties for the second time. It retained the combination of thrash and industrial metal and contained a cover of the D.R.I. song, "Acid Rain," which had previously appeared on a tribute album to the band.

For some time afterwards, Crash focused more on live performances, causing a substantial gap between albums. Eventually however, they returned to the studio to create their sixth studio album, and first for seven years, "The Paragon of Animals." It received a generally good response and featured something a of a return to their thrash metal roots, whilst retaining their industrial sound. Since then, the band has once again focused on live performances, but with a five year gap approaching since their last album, it surely won't be long before one of Asia's finest veterans take to the studio once again.

Wow! Never thought I'd see an article on these guys. I was turned on to them when I was in Korea. Saw them open up for Pantera. Great band. Nice digging Oz!
