Darkness Divided Talks New Album "Written In Blood"

A new force to be reckoned with in the metalcore world, Texas quartet Darkness Divided has skyrocketed straight to a record deal and is officially a part of the Victory Records family. You can now hear what all the fuss is about, as the band's debut full-length "Written In Blood" (streaming below) has officially been released through Victory.

We also got in touch with the band to discuss it's sudden success, the metal scene in the San Antonio area, and switching gears from music school to traveling the country in a van for metal shows. Read the full interview below.

xFiruath: When and how did you get hooked up with the Victory Records crew?

A friend pitched our music to Victory Records in December, and immediately afterwards they had us come out to Chicago and meet them. By January we were signing contracts!

xFiruath: Who put together the “A Well Run Dry” animated clip and was that something you guys had direct input over?

Dustin Smith over at Victory made that for us. He's awesome and he was very open to having us give our input for it. We love how it came out!

xFiruath: Will there be any other lyric clips or perhaps even full music videos for this album?

We just released a music video for "The Hands That Bled." Eric Richter from Victory directed that and it came out awesome. We do plan on doing more music videos as well, but check out “The Hands That Bled.”

xFiruath: How long have you been involved in the music scene and what first got you interested in being in a metal band?

Everyone in the band has a different time frame for when they started listening to metal. Sebastian, our guitar player, has been listening to some form of metal his whole life. Chris and Joe started listening to metal when they were in middle school, and I didn't really get into it until sometime my freshman year of high school. My first show I ever went to was when I was a sophomore and it was to see Haste The Day and Oh Sleeper, which are some of our favorite bands. Our first show we ever played was my first time at any San Antonio venue and that was back in 2010.

xFiruath: Tell me a bit about “Written In Blood” - what sort of themes do the lyrics deal with?

“Written In Blood” is written with the idea that in life there are struggles. However Jesus Christ died so that we can we can have salvation. We never have to feel like our problems are too great because Jesus paid the ultimate price and we can get through whatever we are going through. It also is the idea that we all have problems we go through, and we can help each other to get passed them. Anything we have ever gone through, someone else has had the same problem and gotten through it. Because of that mentality, we can help each other and we can all overcome struggle and we never have to feel alone in our suffering.

xFiruath: Where did you record the album?

We recorded in San Antonio at Alchemist Recording Studio with Cory Brunnemann. It was a great process. Cory definitely pushed every single one of to be on the top of our game so that no slack would make the record. We spent six weeks with him in the studio and we couldn't be happier with how everything came out.

xFiruath: Are any of the band members active with other musical projects?

Not anymore. Our bassist used to be a clarinet major at The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas in Austin. His orchestra would travel all over the world and perform to soldout halls. Now he just travels in a stinky van with us playing metal music haha, but we all love it. He is definitely glad to be with us.

xFiruath: What are some of your favorite metal releases releases this year, and what's coming soon that you are looking forward to?

Man that's hard because so many bands have put out records recently. For me, I’m looking forward to the new Fit For A King and my favorite album so far has been For Today's “Break The Cycle.”

xFiruath: Has the band been active in the live scene lately, and where are you headed to support the album in the near future?

We've been touring all year except for when we weren't in the studio. We are locking in immediate tour plans for the Fall and Winter in the next couple days! Stay tuned – you will be seeing us soon!

xFiruath: What's happening with metal these days in San Antonio?

So many shows! Upon A Burning Body, who are also from San Antonio, just had a secret release show that was killer. We also have a CD release show Friday which we are looking at making our biggest home show ever. Suicide Silence, Black Daliah Murder, Beartooth, Issues, Betraying The Martyrs, and a ton of other bands are coming in the next couple weeks too.

xFiruath: Anything you'd like to say to the fans?

Thanks for picking up our record “Written In Blood.” We hope it speaks to you and we hope to see you guys on the road soon!
