Opeth's "Cusp Of Eternity" Single Release Pushed Back

Update: Roadrunner and Opeth have now released a statement about the delay and announced the album is being pushed back to August. Check it out right here.

In a press release sent out last month by Roadrunner Records, it was announced that "Cusp of Eternity" - the first single off Opeth's new album "Pale Communion" - would be released along with album pre-order info on May 6th, 2014.

Obviously that date has come and passed without the single coming online, and fans are not happy about it. Every post on the Roadrunner Records Facebook page is filled with dozens of not-so-nice comments from Opethians (and I'd say it's a good bet none of them are buying that Black Stone Cherry album RR keeps posting about....) that range from "I always did dislike your company. I'm sure this type of crap dosen't happen with Nickelback" to threats to pirate the album when it is released, on to amusing Opeth lyric references like "I don't know how or why, and I'll never know WHEN..."

There's been no official statement yet from either Roadrunner or Opeth, but rumors are circling that the original June 17th release date for "Pale Communion" is being pushed back to the end of the Summer. Stay tuned for further details when an official announcement is made available.

Are you looking forward to the new album, and what you think of the lead single being pushed back without an explanation?

What you didn't show or mention is the only response so far from Roadrunner, it's a snarky comment in reply to that very first comment shown in that fb picture attached to the story. Basically saying if we want any Opeth news we need to buy and listen to the Black Stone Cherry album first.

I have to assume the fault lies with Roadrunner, as a company wouldn't let their name get dragged through the mud if it wasn't their fault.

The lack of communication is incomprehensible. Albums get delayed all the time, just tell us! That doesn't make fans nearly as angry as having to refresh Facebook pages all day trying to find out what's going on...

these are the moments when fans "band" together.

I hope the label is boycotted and nobody spends a dime on the pre-order scam, cancel everything and let the band intervene.

I say we all pirate the new album when and if it's ever released, not giving RR records a f***ing dime and suggest Opeth starts a fundraiser that we can all donate money to them for their work on the album. I am beyond livid with RR records after reading the response that they posted on their page regarding the single not being released. 'Til then enjoy some old Opeth.

Yeah! What they said!!! In this day of instant communication, we needed to know by 12:00AM on May 6th of the delay, all reasons for the delay, and the revised release date! There are no excuses! And about that sh|tty FB comment from some unnamed RR employee... A sense of humor will not be tolerated when it comes to Opeth, Facebook, the internet, or any combination thereof!!!

**end sarcasm**

Doesn't it seem like things are getting blown out of proportion just a tad?

Someone somewhere is being paid too little while trembling violently/involuntarily over a keyboard to craft an official explanation that doesn't implicate the band, label, or other high visibility links in the chain to sloth, neglect, or greed.

I'm almost more excited to read that than hear the new single. Almost.

You're putting words in fans' mouths. We just want the single! Failing that, tell us it's not coming out. It's not that hard, and it's not too much to expect.

No they aren't. Like you said, it's an age of instant communication. They made a promise a month ago to all of the fans that preorders and a new single would be available today. People have spent that entire time in anticipation, wanting with all of their hearts to hear new music from one of their favorite bands. Delays are annoying but normal and forgivable, but for fans to have waited patiently only to have to sit here wondering, constantly searching for ANY news or explanation because RR can't even bother to do their job and honor a promise? Unforgivable. For them to reply to a direct question concerning them honoring that promise with a snarky sarcastic response that answers nothing? f***ING OUTRAGEOUS!

I wasn't putting words into fans' mouths, I was making a poor attempt at sarcasm. But, I guess as Shakespeare has said, "In jest, there is truth."

In order to get this single out, there are multiple hurdles to clear, including conversion to the itunes format, Opeth's approval of the mix, and probably a few other legalistic/contractual ones. The fact is, no one knows where the ball was dropped. Maybe Roadrunner overpromised. Maybe Opeth want to tweak the mix, maybe their contract has a clause that created some legalistic red tape. I don't claim that any of these are why, but they are possibilities. Yes, RR made a promise and they broke it. True enough. But, for Opethians to jump on FB and suggest piracy and inflate the delay in reporting the reasons into a great injustice is overreaching.
It's one song that will sell on itunes for less than a couple bucks. Getting that worked up over a couple dollars is childish.

Have a little patience and give them time to sort out the matter. Considering the length of Opeth's greatest songs, I'd think Opeth fans would have more patience than this.

@Camilla
If "Delays are normal and forgivable", then try to be a bit forgiving.

Haha, this sh** is getting out of hand. One dude is posting about burning the RR headquarters down over on Facebook. It's kind of weird at this point that they haven't even released a stop-gap post like "Hey, sorry for the delay, we'll have an announcement soon while things get worked out." There's no way they aren't aware of the uproar going on. I shudder to think of how pre-Heritage I was just as rabid an Opeth fanboy as some of these folks :)

Seriously? Did you even read what I wrote, or what anyone is saying? The delay isn't the unforgivable part. Patience would be if they said "Sorry it will be x amount of time before it comes out" and we had to wait patiently. This is just ignoring a promise they already made and intentionally keeping people in the dark about it. It's bad business, and being complacent with it just allows sh**ty record labels to continue to do bad business unchecked. At this point it's getting a little frustrating that the band hasn't made a statement as well, even something simple like xfiruath mentioned. Soon it will have been 48 hours with absolutely no word and there's no excuse for that. I fully agree the burning RR headquarters down comments and some of the other sh**s are silly and extreme, but there's no reason peoples' response to this should be "Oh that's fine."

Camilla,

Yes, I did... every contradicting sentence.

I never said fans shouldn't react to the delay, I'm only saying that people shouldn't OVER-react.
Giving RR less than 24 hours (or even 48 hours) is, IMO, overreacting.

A simple "Hey, what's the deal?" is fine. But, when it devolves to blanket statements that the record company sucks balls in everything because they failed at this one thing, and similar comments, then it's just ignorant and does nothing to incentivive RR to provide a thoughtful and considerate response.

If you've simply reacted, then my comments above really weren't speaking to you. If you OVER reacted, then may I offer this...

The lack of official information is what's driving the madness. Again, it's kind of absurd there isn't even an acknowledgment of a delay by RR (even if that's the obvious) on their FB, or a simple "there are logistic issues yet to be resolved, please be patient for a new pre-sale/single date." While I agree that some of the comments on FB are ridiculous, it's up to the label to squash it with some real information. I have a feeling that the delay is with regards to the physical release format in surround (Blu-ray), and not necessarily the CD or vinyl. It's not been finalized/agreed upon, and with uncertainty on a physical product, you can't start taking pre-orders. This is just speculation on my part, but we shall see.
