Update: the band's management has now issued an official statement, which can be read here.

According to various reports, GWAR frontman Dave Brockie, also known as Oderus Urungus, has been found dead in his home. He was fifty years old. Chris Bopst, a former Gwar bassist and current writer for Style Weekly stated: "I wish it was a joke. Everyone is in shock."

"Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I've known," another former Gwar bassist Mike Bishop added. "He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art."

"His penchant for scatological humors belied a lucid wit. He was a criminally underrated lyricist and hard rock vocalist, one of the best, ever! A great front man, a great painter, writer, he was also a hell of a bass guitarist. I loved him. He was capable of great empathy and had a real sense of justice."

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe also weighed in on Brockie's passing, saying: "Got a very sad call tonight from my buddy Chris Bopst, who was one of the original members of GWAR- my friend Dave Brockie, AKA Oderus Urungus, the singer of GWAR, has left the building & taken off back to his home planet. He was 50 years old. I do not know details of why he died yet, just that he passed away at home & his roommates found him."

Gwar's management is expected to comment on the situation at 1pm EST today.

Such bad news to wake up to. I owe a lot of myself to discovering GWAR at the age of 12! A sad sad day for metalheads, punks and all living people, really. RIP ODERUS

I was never a huge fan of Gwar, but saw them live twice and did enjoy it. Mr Urungus' appearances on the Fox News show 'Red Eye' were always great.

Sincere R.I.P. to Dave Brockie.

I'll never forget the energy and hilarity of GWAR live with him as the frontman. He surely holds some kind of world record for most amazing and amusing responses to interview questions.

None but the Brave

"Welcome back, is it the same? Smelly but now old and lame
Did you ever think to miss me? Here's my ass, come on and kiss me

We come on out here, none but the brave
And then I say to myself why do I stay and stay
Is there a reason? Hypocrisy?
But in the end I only got just what you gave to me
Whud you get? Share it with me
Whud you get? Did you get it for free?
Then it ain't worth nothing baby
We got a deli, we got a bus
We got a lot of people throwing rocks at us
We got a tour lined up, we got a show
I got a midget following me around everywhere I go now
He says his name is Joe now, I really just don't know now
None but the brave, why do you stay and stay?
Sad enough to make me cry, strong enough to make me die
Now I'm feeling saddle sore
Now I'm feeling warm
Keep you here safe from harm, tuck you down inside my arm
And when you're lonely and afraid, remember the love we made"

Tragic. I had the privilege of meeting Dave on several occasions. He was one of a kind, no doubt about it. The man was a creative genius and endlessly unique. I'm going to miss him, both as the frontman of GWAR, and the man behind the mask.

Farewell, my friend. Godspeed to the Scumdog Planet.

Hey branded, happy birthday man. Sad news for us all to wake up to, but maybe now you'll get a tradition of spinning some Gwar every birthday. =]

I've been a fan since Beyond Hell and always loved these guys. They brought great laughs to an aggressive scene and still managed to stay brutal. I was sad when Smoot died, but he was easier to replace and continue as a band. I don't think there's any coming back from this. This might be the end for this truly underrated behemoth. I love you GWAR and RIP Dave. BOHAB FOREVER!!

f***ing tragic. Really shocking to me, GWAR fans have been hard hit. Even with their fame, Brockie really was an underrated presence in the metal world, it's only recently they've seemed to become recognized for just how musically good they were.

Just really shocked, RIP Dave you will be missed.
