The riffs are good, The solos will be cleaned up, the vocals are good, the lyrics are fine and the drums are... there. I know that Lars is an important part of Metallica, more to them than just the drummer, but maybe bring Lombardo in for the studio? Who am I kidding after working some studio magic, the drums will sound fine. A man can dream though cant he?

THAT SNOOTY LITTLE f***ER LARS ULRICH APPARENTLY STILL HAS SOME PISS AND VINEGAR IN HIM. I CAN ALSO HEAR SOME PROG MAIDEN GUITAR AROUND THE 5:30 MARK. SUMMER IS A STRANGE THEME FOR METALLICA, BUT HELL.......BY SUMMERTIME I'LL BET MOST OF US ARE LOVING THIS.

NOW PLAYING: HEAVEN & HELL "NEON KNIGHTS" (LIVE AT WACKEN 2009).

The only problem, albeit a big one is the guitar tone is too thin and twangy. If this had the punch of a metal band not trying to have enough commercial appeal, it would be the most solid track Metallica has done as a thrash band since Justice.

ha ha, what a fvcking chumpshow...does nobody here recognize the parisiting of the riff from megadeth's "holy wars", however poorly done? heh, irony at its pathetic worst :)

Though i do yhink you can hear a celebration somewhere on here of the turd danish' pitiful choice of haircut:

"skullet, skullet! ya, yeah!"

jaymez sound like fvcking sh!t (and severely constipated) on the mic, per usual i guess...and poor ol Grap Ape is startin to look as shabby and haggard of the rest of the carnival act he sold out and signed up to jibber for

Well, the Golden Gate is close to home, and plenty high...a group jump would indeed be actually worthy of some news

Yes, I'd toast a crispy cold one to that indeed :)

I gotta laugh at all the Metallica haters out there. Fine, everyone is entitled to an opinion but most of you are haters for the sake of being a hater. Because they achieved mass success. If Megadeth or Slayer or whoever you think is the worlds greatest metal band sold 100+ million records you'd be razzing them too. Get over it! If you don't like them, don't listen to it.

Expecting men in their 50's to sound like they did in their 20's is RETARDED. Right now James voice sounds the best it has since maybe the Black album.

Lords of Summer is a continuation of return to roots IMO and many parts of it particularly the sound i guess (being a demo and all) reminds very much of the 0.99 Garage Days EP which i love.

Anyway, Metallica may not be what they were 30 years ago but they are still major force to be reckoned with and one of the greatest if not the greatest metal band of all time. No denying it.

Or maybe we think the music they put out has truly sucked again and again......

"Expecting men in their 50's to sound like they did in their 20's is RETARDED"

Or maybe expecting them to put out some good music and how they fail again and again does not make us
"we-todd-did"

"Metallica may not be what they were 30 years ago but they are still major force to be reckoned with and one of the greatest if not the greatest metal band of all time"

THANKS FOR THAT EXCELLENT FUNNY JOKE!!!

Well, here’s my 2 cents if anyone cares.
I like it.
Here’s why..
I was expecting them to return to the Load era style rock and they actually did…thrash?
Death Magnetic was a decent return to form but it struck me as a band that took a bunch of riffs and copy/pasted them to make long songs.
This song sounds like they’ve finally gelled with Robert.
It sounds like an actual song, it has flow.
Is it formulaic?
Well, yes…but people like me have been b*****ng for years how they abandoned the formula so it would be a tad hypocritical of me to criticize this.
James sounds better…not great…but this is the raspiest I’ve heard him in ages.
The guitar tones which have been overly muddy in the past have a much brighter, crisper tone…sort of Kill Em All-ish.
The only thing that I don’t care for is the chorus as it doesn’t sound properly worked out but they have plenty of time to fix it.
All in all….I enjoy it.
It has, I dare say…conviction…and you can’t fake that.
They sound like they’re enjoying themselves and not trying to force it.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting much anyways from Metallica. Its not bad, just not something great. And the age excuse is lame, plenty of bands like Testament, Exodus,Overkill, Kreator, etc. still write and record music that stands with some of their best work from the 80's.

This has a real Kill 'Em All vibe for most of it even the production has that sound and feel to it. Of course it's also about 2-3 minutes too long and James sounds like sh** but it's far from the worst they've put out in the last 20 years.

Never thought I'd say this about Metallica, but it's repetitive and redundant all at once. I prolly shouldn't have listened to the new Arch Enemy and Agonist songs before this one.

Just a really boring generic hackneyed thrash track that was probably written in one go to be honest. What a shame. It's not worse than anything on st. anger and the production is better than death magnetic but what a snoozer

This isn't too bad really. OK OK it's not justice. But it isn't Lulu either. That thing was a pile, and people razzed me for having low hopes for it.

I will be kinda sad if this turns out to be the best track on the album, though.

Overall not too good. The odd riff is OK but lots of other metal bands play circles around them. Of course its not all about the technical complexity of the riffs / solos but once again the worst parts of the song are Lars drums and Kirks leads. I can literally count on one hand the number of good solos Kirk has. He has very sloppy technique and also the tendency to repeat the same notes for several measures which gets very tiring fast. They're not even well picked notes. Lars basically always sucked. He keeps the time (sort of, mostly just follows James like everyone else). Again, so many other metal drummers utterly humiliate him. This comment may sound overly critical but I am a Metallica fan and I just think they can do better. In my humble opinion, Master was the best thrash and Justice was the heaviest. James always was Metallica essentially, he's the only one you can't replace. Before his tragic passing, Burton contributed more and even Newstead carried more weight than Lars or Kirk, but whatever, overall the song needs work. I'm one of those weird Metallica fans where I like it all - Lightning, Master, Justice, Black, Load, Re-load, even S&M - some of those (done with Bob Rock) sound too engineered in a studio for some but I like it all (except St. anger of course). I'll wait to hear the finished version and the full album to really decide but if its anything like Magnetic was, the "singles" they release will actually be the worst songs on the album. All nightmare long and especially suicide and redemption were awesome. Right now though I'm really into Zakk Wylde, (always have been)what an awesome musician. BLS! BLS! BLS! BLS! BLS! etc... VP
