Shvpes Announces Breakup

British metalcore band Shvpes, fronted by Griffin Dickinson, son of Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, has announced that they have decided to disband. The band were formed in 2009 under the name Cytota, but changed their name in early 2015 to Shvapes, after which they released their debut full length, "Pain. Joy. Ecstasy. Despair," in 2016, with their sophomore album, "Greater Than" following two years later. A statement from the band reads as follows:

"Good things all come to an end. After much introspection, we have decided to call it a day with SHVPES.

"As this band has evolved, we have grown a lot as musicians and as people. And as a result we have found ourselves beginning to move in separate directions, musically and otherwise. To continue on as SHVPES would only place further strain on our mental health and personal relationships, as well as be dishonest and a disservice to all of you.

"We leave on good terms, proud and grateful for everything we've achieved.

"To the fans and everyone who has supported, invested and believed in us, we wholeheartedly thank you. You have allowed us to accomplish things we only ever dreamed of and be a part of something bigger than ourselves. For now though, it’s time for a new chapter."

Agathodaimon Announces Reunion

Dark metal institution Agathodaimon have officially signed a worldwide record deal with Napalm Records. Formed by Sathonys (guitar) and Matthias Rodig (drums), the German five-piece quickly evolved, performed at major European festivals and released six studio albums throughout their vast career. Seven years after their highly praised full length, In Darkness, Agathodaimon reunited in February 2020 and are currently working on new material! More to be announced soon!

Sathonys: "We’re proud to announce that we have signed a deal with Napalm Records! As some of you know, Agathodaimon was put on hold for years. We've been working on a reunion for many months though, to get back in shape- and when we finally felt ready and announced the comeback in February, we were hoping to find a good partner soon, to release our next album. Yet, I didn't expect that we would be contacted by Napalm right away, a label that has developed in such an impressive way over the course of the last decades. Not only being able to sign lots of excellent bands, but who also managed to gather an impressive team of specialists over the course of time, all fully dedicated to and passionate about metal. So, here we are, and we couldn't be more excited to be part of their artist roster. We're absolutely looking forward to working with these guys!"

Napalm Records A&R Sebastian Muench: "In 1998, Agathodaimon released Blacken The Angel, an absolute masterpiece! As many, back in the good old days, I heard first about the band when I bought Metal Hammer Germany magazine and listened to the sampler CD that came with it. The song 'Tristetea Vehementa' on the Off Road Tracks Vol. 10 Metal Hammer compilation made me fan for life. Agathodaimon was able to perfectly combine the best elements from Symphonic Metal, Gothic Metal and Black Metal. The song 'Body Of Clay' is arguably even one of the best Doom Metal songs. All five album releases followed that recipe and resulted in some very unique and timeless classic albums. We are super excited to work with Agathodaimon in the future!"

During Corona-lockdown and due to the fact that Ragnarök Festival was cancelled (where the band was due to play), they put together this joint effort - each band member recorded audio / video of this song individually, and this is the merged result. More...

Napalm Death Reveals New Album Details

UK grindcore pioneers Napalm Death are delighted to announce their upcoming studio album release "Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism," to be released on September 18th, 2020 via Century Media Records.

"Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism" is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2015’s acclaimed "Apex Predator – Easy Meat" album, was again recorded with longtime producer Russ Russell and features artwork by Frode Sylthe (seen below).

Napalm Death’s vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway checked in with the following comment about the upcoming album and its theme:

"The phrase sticking in my mind when I started thinking about the lyrical direction for this album was “the other”. You could recognise at the time that there was a rapidly growing fear and paranoia being generated about everybody, from migrating people to people with fluid sexuality and this was starting to manifest itself in very antagonistic reactions that you felt were almost verging on violence. Not everybody resorts to such reactions of course, but even the basic lack of understanding can become toxic over time. I’m not saying that this is an entirely new phenomenon, but it has been stoked in recent history by some particularly attack-minded people in more political circles and, as ever, I felt that it would be the natural antidote to endorse basic humanity and solidarity with all.

"The artwork specifically uses a white dove as a centrepiece, which of course is a commonly recognised symbol of peace and cooperation. The dove has been mauled very violently by a sterilising hand and in death appears particularly broken and bloodied. However, through the violence you can see an equality symbol in blood on the chest of the dove, which perhaps demonstrates – visually at least – that equality cuts through in the end. A positive amidst many negatives then, much like the album title itself being a bit of an oxymoron – the celebration of humanity even in the mangling jaws of negativity”. More...

Guitarist Bob Kulick Passes Away

Bob Kulick, the veteran guitarist who made his name performing with the likes of Kiss, W.A.S.P., Meat Loaf, Doro and others, has sadly passed away at the age of 70. No cause of death has been revealed as of yet. The news was broken by his brother Bruce, who himself performed with Kiss, who took to Twitter with the following message:

"I am heartbroken to have to share the news of the passing of my brother Bob Kulick. His love of music, and his talent as a musician and producer should always be celebrated. Please respect the Kulick Family’s privacy during this sad time."

Bob Kulick auditioned for Kiss when the band was forming, but Ace Frehley was chosen over him. Despite this, he would make uncredited appearances on four albums, including "Alive II," "Unmasked," "Killers" and "Creatures Of The Night," as well as working with frontman Paul Stanley on his debut solo album. Before this, he recorded with rock icon Lou Reed on the classic, "Coney Island Baby" album and would later join W.A.S.P. for two studio albums, "The Crimson Idol" and "Still Not Black Enough," before working with metal queen Doro Pesch on her 2000 release, "Calling The Wild," where he played with the singer and Motorhead frontman Lemmy on the ballad, "Love Me Forever."

His work stretched beyond hard rock and heavy metal, as he would also work with Meat Loaf, Diana Ross and Michael Bolton, as well composing music for beloved cartoon Spongebob Squarepants and the World Wrestling Federation, performing with Motorhead on the theme for wrestler Triple H entitled, "The Game," widely regarded by wrestling fans as one of the best entrance themes ever. He would eventually release a solo album in 2017 entitled, "Skeletons In The Closet." More...

No Live Concerts Until Fall 2021?

The impact that the lockdown initiated to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had on the music industry - and on live music industry in particular - in just a few weeks has already been ruinous. And it would seem the touring business may remain on hold for much longer than expected.

While some bands have been rescheduling for mid or late summer, some other major festivals and events have been postponed to fall or 2021. Metal booking agent Daniel DeFonce of Continental Touring expressed his fears that touring won’t likely be happening again until 2021.

Now, in a recently published feature at The New York Times about restarting the American economy, it seems that even that assessment could be too short-sighted:

Bioethicist Zeke Emanuel - vice provost for global initiatives and director of the Healthcare Transformation Institute at the University of Pennsylvania; host of a new podcast about coronavirus, ‘Making the Call‘; and author of the upcoming book ‘Which Country Has the World’s Best Health Care?‘ - thinks: More...

Absu Announces Break Up

American black metal veterans Absu has announced that they are no more. A post on social media from drummer and vocalist Proscriptor McGovern reads as follows:

"After meager deliberation and zero remorse, I have decided to dissolve ABSU after three decades of existence. Collectively and universally speaking, this decision is finite due to insoluble circumstances, which has led to this ultimate result. No amount of time, exertion, formula or fashion can alter my verdict.

"Refusing to further comment on the subject, I leave thee with the following enchantment:

"{Vii} For there are bitter waters of Chaos held immobile under (the) ground – And the Sovereigns, who personify them, reign over Opacities and Beyond.

"[II] Beseech these All-Begetters in darkness, outside the circles of time. In Chaos’ sleight of hand, the Deep will respond.”

"{Vi} Never Blow Out The Eastern Candle – Proscriptor McGovern (Russ R. Givens)"

Absu formed in 1989 in Plano, Texas and released their debut full length, "Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L." in 1993. After their acclaimed 2001 album, "Tara," the band went on hiatus for five years before returning, eventually releasing an eponymous album in 2009.
