Making It To The Top: Level-C's Misty Everson
Many that watched Level-C on the MTV cable produced Battle For Ozzfest may recall seeing this female metal group out of Cleveland, Ohio make it all the way to the top ten out of nearly eight hundred bands in the entire competition. When I discovered them on Myspace and saw that they did indeed have a unique sound and hard rocking image, I expected that they would be signed by a label sooner rather than later. And sure enough, they have been recently signed to Crash Music Incorporated for a two album deal. In light of this, I had some of my new questions answered by the band's drummer, Misty Everson.
Rocket: Let me first address the recent news of Level-C getting signed to a two album deal with Crash Music. I am so happy for this band. Tell me, exactly how excited have all of you ladies been since the signing? There aren't many all female bands in Rock history to make it as far as this band has now achieved. And there's literally only a few from that group that fall into the metal music category.
Misty: It's a dream come true for all of us!!!!! I think were all still in a daze though. How do you act when you finally achieve something you've dreamed about your entire life?! Thank You Crash for giving us our Big Break!!
Rocket: Are you originally from Cleveland, Ohio?
Misty: Nope, Pro Football Hall of Fame City of Canton ( no, havent been there yet!!!)
Rocket: When did you first start playing drums? And have you ever taken lessons?
Misty: Wow, two decades ago. Oh yeah, I suffered through about ten years of lessons. I was trained on classical snare, marimba, timpani, even triangle technique - but that damn lady wouldn't let me get behind a drum kit!!!! (What kinda torture is that?) I even went to college for jazz performance (they let me play the drumkit!!! ) So, my band mates kidnapped me, strapped a double bass pedal to my feet, gave me two small trees and told me to beat the snot outta those drumss o here I am, playing METAL!!! Thanx guys!!!
Rocket: Name a few drummers past or present that have been the most influential to your playing?
Misty: John Bonham definitely, the god of knowing when to lay back and when to kick em in the ass!! Carter Beauford, Mr. Crazy hi-hat technique. He just throws things in weird places and they fit!! Dave Weckyll, wicked fills, awesome grooves. He's all over the place. If you can learn 30 seconds you're having a good week!!!
Rocket: Right on. Run us down on the specs for your drum kit.
Misty: Yamaha Stage Custom (green neon flame) 8,10,12,14,18, 22bass, 14snare Evans G1 clear on the toms, reverse power dot on the snare, G1 coated on the 18floor
Aquarian SuperKick II on Bass Zildjian Ks and Sabians..yes, Im a mixer!!!!
Oh, and a slightly modified DW double bass pedalwhere have all the good pedals gone?
Rocket: Who are some of the current metal bands that you enjoy today?
Misty: That's difficult. I listen to everything and I do mean everything!
Rocket: Back to the future now, can you give us any kind of hint as to what we can expect from the debut Level-C album? Mainly we want to know if you're going to make sure and keep the material super heavy.
Misty: This is going to be one hell of an album!!! We've been writing our asses off. This one's for the fans that come to the show and shove each other around, and for the fans that e-mail us saying keep it metal. This is for the guy (monkey) in Alaska who has never seen a show, or met us but went to the tattoo shop and got the first LEVEL C tattoo!! We thought we'd give the fans something to break shit to. This is going to be a very aggressive album.
Rocket: More on the recent signing with Crash Music. I know you all had to have gone out and celebrated the night away. Did you include friends and family or was it just the women of the C?
Misty: Actually, we really haven't celebrated yet. We're trying to get these songs perfect so we can put out one hell of an album. Were planning on celebrating later with our fans!
Rocket: What would you say to a young upstart female metal band out there that is hearing a lot of the same negative statements Level-C did over the years? In terms of metal not being a place for a girl band.
Misty: Don't feed in to it, or let it get you down. Be confident in who you are as a person, and as a band and go out and show those guys whos boss where it counts...the stage!!!
Rocket: Do you personally ever answer any of your fan mail on Myspace? Or is it something you're not really into? Not everyone is glued to the computer screen out there, right?
Misty: Yes, We all respond. We try to stay as close to the fans as possible, theyre our friends. Im the pain in the but that sends out that pesky mailing list to get people off the couch and into the pit!!!
Rocket: So what are some of the upcoming Level-C shows?
Misty: Are you following me? I have a bad memory, so I went to our Myspace page
