"some music was meant to stay underground..."

70000 Tons of Metal - The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise

Interview With Killing Of Mind

Killing of Mind hails from Santa Rosa, California and is made up of four members, including Paul Nieblas on vocals, Niall Mulcahy hitting the drums, Russell Mederios on guitar/vocals and Tony D'Orazio on Bass/backup vocals). Having released two independent cd's: "Self-titled" black EP (2002), and "Strings" (2004), they are one of the top unsigned metal acts in the underground at this point and seem to firing on all cylinders with their high energy live shows. The band took time out recently to give us all a better rundown on what makes Killing of Mind tick.

Rocket: What does the band moniker Killing of Mind really mean to you guys?

Naill: The name came from an ex guitarist.

Tony: We just thought it stuck right.

Russell: There is no real meaning to the name "Killing Of Mind".

Paul: Really, it's just bad english.

Rocket: Right on. I guess we got that figured out. So when did this band first form?

Tony: In 2002.

Rocket: What three metal bands have been the biggest influence or inspiration for Killing of Mind?

Tony: Three bands is not enough. We are influenced from all sorts of music.. We could say, Finger 11, Killswitch Engage, Inflames...Machine Head --yeah it's 4, but.. what can ya do?

Rocket: How do you guys handle the writing process?

Tony: Everyone in the band can play guitar. We all bring riff/song/anything we can bring to the table. Then Russell, and I get together to go over the song. Russell puts a lot of flare into our songs. After the song is put together, it's practiced over and over, and over again. Our songs change at least 10-15 times before we make a final cut. We are very open minded, and outspoken when it comes to songs. If all of us like the song then its a keeper. We have so many songs that don't even make it to the stage, because we believe if one person is not happy about a song and doesn't like playing it... well... we do this to have fun, and why play something that you're not in love or having fun with?

Rocket: Great point. What is the song Corybantic about?

Paul: The song is about seeing your fuck ups and learning from them. It's a sarcastic way of saying, "Learn from your mistakes."

Rocket Which couple of songs seem to be the biggest audience pleasers when you play out live?

Paul: Death Becomes Us.

Tony:Unspoken Words.

Russell: Speak.

Niall:System & Corybantic.

Rocket: What does Dimebag Darrell's musical legacy mean to this band?

Paul: He was an amazing man. We still feel people should thank him for doing great things for metal, that most people dream of.

Rocket: On a lighter note, what's the funniest thing that happened on the stage with this band?

Paul: SACK WHACKING.. that would be an all around thing. If you've seen us on stage we like to mess around with one another.

Tony: We were playing at the Time Out in Concord and Russell jumps up, and his guitar follows him... the guitar hits Russell in the face, and he starts to stagger around on stage, and looking like he was on his way to being knocked out. You could just see Russell was not all there, and the nice amount of blood coming from his nose.

Rocket: Heavy metal. I dig it. Ha! What two dream sponsors would this band love to have one day?

Tony: Well, we are very lucky, and greatfull for the things we have right now. For right now we think we are set. We have the basic equipment sponsors.

Rocket: Who are some of the indie record labels that you guys respect?

Russell: Trust Kill.

Tony: Victory.

Paul: Road Runner.

Paul: Nitro.

Niall: Metal Blade.

Rocket: Are you guys going to be releasing any new material soon?

Tony: We are finishing up our 3rd CD. We just thought of the name. "Through the Darkness".

Rocket: Do you guys answer your fan mail on MySpace?

Tony: I'm the one that keeps that thing going. If you've seen a bulletin, that's me! Usually Paul will pop on to put up shows, but other than that, it's all me up in there.

Rocket: What are some of the upcoming Killing of Mind shows we need to watch out for?

Tony: June 3rd at Sweet Lou's! Then June 23rd at the Last Day saloon in Santa Rosa! For more go to: www.myspace.com/killingofmindnet.

Rocket: Give a shout out to your biggest supporters.
