Speaking With The Devil: Jeremiah of Under One
The Michigan local metal scene has spawned one of the more compelling acts with Lansing's mosh inducing Under One. The group since inception has stayed true to the great metal that came before it . The band is fronted by Jeremiah Devil, one of underground metal's more entertaining personalities. Citing key influences like Black Sabbath, Crowbar, Demolition Hammer, Down, Disturbed and Helloween, I had a cool time stepping into the fire with Mr. Devil and picking at his skull to learn all I could about Under One.
Rocket: How exactly did Under One form originally?
J. Devil: Well, Mike and Rich along with others were already a band called Curbstomp. After a few changes in the lineup,me and Jay-D from Hellcore and Tony from Uncle Chuck came together and now we are officially a super group! Haha! Under One was born of fire!
Rocket: When did you first start singing in a metal band?
J. Devil: When I was about twenty, I played guitar in a band called Death Pool, and I switched to vocals because I had to. After our first practice, my buddies were like, "Dude, you're not too bad." So it just stuck and I never quit singing, but I still love the guitar.
Rocket: Who are some of your favorite metal vocalists? And why?
J. Devil: Of course Phil Anselmo, Randy Blythe, Ozzy, Zakk Wylde, Pepper Keenan. Kirk Windstein, Chris Barnes, Tom Araya, Rob Zombie, Dave Draiman and Chuck Billy. Why? Because they set the fucking trend for me to follow! Metal is metal because of these guys.
Rocket: What is the song Long Division about?
J. Devil:The Battle between good and evil over our soul. Is your soul for sale, Rocket? Haha.
Rocket: I know Under One has been hitting the local club scene throughout many cities beyond your hometown of Lansing, Michigan. How has the turnout been and are you pleased with how things have gone performance wise?
J. Devil: We love it at home but we love the road more. Our fan base is growing very fucking fast. It is very cool to be a success... even if it is only local so far.
Rocket: Tell me about who you have been working with on the band's demo recordings? Or are you guys doing it yourself?
J. Devil: Scott Bozack at "Big Gig Productions" did our demo. We also have a live demo coming out in a couple of months or so with a full length studio release in the fall.
Rocket: You know how much I dig the song Full Time Demon. That one along with Long Division are your strongest in my opinion. What is the writing process like for the band?
J. Devil: Well... actually we all have an equal part in the writing process. We just get together and jam and what we like we keep.
Rocket: Most music acts today see the potency in marketing via MySpace.com. How has that experience being going so far for Under One?
J. Devil:We fucking love MySpace. We are all motherfucking MySpace junkies! Checkout each one of our profiles @ www.myspace.com/underone.
We also have a website with chat, forum, photos, bio, contact, etc... @ www.underonemetal.com
Rocket: What's up next in terms of recording? Are you working on some new demos?
J. Devil: Yes! Our new shit is sick as fuck!
Rocket: If you were to get approached by a label tomorrow would Under One have enough material for a first album?
J. Devil: Fuck yes. We've got plenty of crowd killers in our bag of tricks. Probably three albums worth!
Rocket: What are some of the shows you guys will be doing in the near future?
J. Devil: I know we got Planet Rock, TNT's, Club Soda, Skunks Nest, Modern Exchange, Oade's Hidden Camel and a few others. You'll have to hit up our site for dates and locations.
Rocket: What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you on stage? And you being such a wildman have got to a classic for me.
J. Devil: One time I had some ragged ass shorts on with a bad zipper... and guess what? I leaned back to scream and my c*** flopped out and some chick snapped a picture! Haha. But she was cool about it and gave up the photo. It was pretty fucking funny though.
Rocket: Haha... I knew you wouldn't disappoint on that one, bro. Go ahead and give some shoutouts to your main supporters. I know you have got a bunch of them.
J. Devil: We want to say what's up to The Metal Den, Blackened Moon, Big Gig Productions, All Michigan metal bands, All metal fans (Den Headz) and our loved ones! You already know who you are.
