70000 Tons of Metal - The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise

Getting Sedated: Perdiem Experiments In Thrash

Upon first listen, the experimental thrash metal approach of Space Coast, Florida's, Perdiem, may throw off the usual crowd that're brainwashed into appreciating only the standard blast beat, scream your guts out formula that most new metal bands use to be accepted. I was immediately intrigued by what Perdiem was doing and I'm glad to be able to open others eyes to this growing underground heavy music talent.

Rocket: Why don't we start out by learning how you guys formed as a band. Is this the original lineup?

Dusty Dandurand: The Original lineup of Perdiem has changed a lot over the past 5 years now. Various titles, people and sound. Dusty on lead guitar and J.Stone on vocals have been writing and playing together for eight years now. So we've solified our style. Perdiem is definitely its own force now.

Rocket: What's going on with the Consumption Defect E.P.? And do you have immediate plans with it once you're finished.

Dusty: We are in rehearsals for pre-recordings right now. We actually just hired a new bassist, B.J., formally of Ephalia, and should be in the studio soon. Our plan is to play as many shows in as many states as possible and keep the ball rolling. After that, we'll go back into the studio to begin production on a full length album.

Rocket: You guys are one of the more fresh and unique metal acts coming out of Florida that I've come across. What's the underground metal music scene like where you guys live?

Dusty: It's totally insane, bro. The scene down here is full of bands who look out for one another and stick tight. All the metal down here is completly insane, aggressive and raw to the bone. I think we'll be getting a lot more attention soon. The scene is on fire.

Rocket: Dusty, I hear so many different influences in your guitar playing. We have talked a bit before about Dimebag and what he means to you personally. What exactly was his influence on your playing?

Dusty: Dude, Dimebag was the guy who made me realize that me playing guitar in a band was the thing I would do for the rest of my life. The first time I heard a Pantera song, they had me won over, man. Dimebag is hands down the most original guitarist ever.

Rocket: Does Perdiem play alot of Pantera covers live? Which ones?

Dusty: Naw, man. We have talked a lot about it, just for a tribute type thing for Dime...but we stick to our guns live. It would be a shit load of fun to do though. I've played Pantera songs since I was a kid.

Rocket: J.Stone, man, I love that gut wrenching, spill it from your soul vocal approach. Who are some of the current metal singers that you look up to and appreciate?

J.Stone: Well, for starters one of the largest influences on my approach would be Corey Talor from Slipknot. As far as some of my favorite vocalist that I take some of my pointers from are Phil Anselmo, George (Corpsegrinder)
Fischer and Jens Kidman. As far as some of the more current vocalist I appreciate that would have to be Randy Blythe from Lamb of God and Dez from Devil Driver. Those guys are getting some sick fuckin tones.

Rocket: What is the meaning behind the song United Nothing?

Dusty: Its about Corruption, man. About how people are stupid enough to hate over propaganda. It's about being fed up and being destructive about it.

Rocket: I can see you guys are marketing heavily on MySpace. How's that been working for the band?

Dusty: Very well. We have been able to network a lot more than if we had a our own site. Tons of people in the underground scene know who we are now and are just waiting for an album release. So we are working hard at that and to get out so people can see what were about live.

ROcket: What are your feelings about a poser metal band like Avenged Sevenfold? Are these guys the biggest group of clowns or am I the only one that can't take another second of the hype surrounding them?

Dusty: Total clown shoes for sure. They wont last. We talk as much shit as we possibly can about poser bands live. Maybe we can spark some kind of new metal revolution. They make us sick on the level to where we can't put it even into words.

Rocket: Yeah. The make me want to punch things for sure. What are some of the newer underground metal acts that you guys dig?

Dusty: Well, Rocket, there are so many. Most of the scene down here are all sick bands. I enjoy a lot of music coming from Austrailia right now. The Metal Den's metal music roster is going off too man..Sacrum is Brutal.

Rocket: Thank you, man. I'm pretty stoked about what we're doing with my roster. Dusty, I know you're also running Fingertap Promotions. What's going on with that, bro?

Dusty: This is my contribution and attempt to bring this Florida metal scene to more people's lives. We are all working hard to spread this chaos everywhere. Me and the guys from Murderous Embrace and Depth Of Burial have started numorous promotions for local bands. I'm working along with Mass Grave Promotions and we are fully dedicated to keeping this scene alive, helping up and coming bands get the right attention.

Rocket: When exactly can the Florida-based fans expect to see Perdiem playing shows in the near future?

Dusty: We have shows booked right now and we will be playing all over Florida all summer. Keep updated on our MySpace for details. We will be covering every inch of our State.

Rocket: Are you guys looking to get signed to a label first before attempting to put out a full album?

Dusty: At this point, whatever happens. We have the knowledge and the ability to start a label now but it comes down to finances. We hope to be able to release the album Independently and find distribution on our own too, truthfully.

Rocket: You seem to have a ton of people in your corner helping spread the word of Perdiem. Go ahad and send some shout outs to those that have meant the most to the band.

Dusty: First off, you're the fuckin man, Rocket. And there are so many others: Jeremy Fucking Lee has been awesome. All the Florida bands who have stood beside us: Nilmorta, Murderous Embrace, Depth of Burial, Carl The Shot Daddy from Mayhem and Rage Metal Radio and endless others. Anyone on our MySpace list who are tight with us. You know who you are. We salute you all.

these guys are Extreme (not the band). I can't wait for the album so I can listen to it during rush hour traffic and run over crossing guards that try to tell me it is too loud; but I won't be able to hear them over the chaos that is PERDIEM!!!
