Interview With Myrkskog's Secthdamon

One of our interviews for the recent Hammerslag Festival (December 16 and 17, 2005) coverage was with Norwegian black/death metal band Myrkskog. After a slight delay, we've heard back from Myrkskog's drummer, Secthdamon.

Gothique: First off, tell us a little bit about the story behind the band. What does the name mean and who came up with it?

Secthdamon: Myrkskog started out in 1993 and was founded by Destructhor and Master V. At that time the music was more black metal than it is today inspired by bands like Dark Throne and Burzum. They had alot of line up changes until I joined the band in late 1995 as a guitarist. We had Anders Eek (Funeral) as a drummer at that time but he was never able to come to rehearsal so I jumped behind the kit and started blasting away haha. We recorded a demo called the Murder Tape and got offers from different labels and ended up signing a deal with Candlelight. We released Deathmachine and Master V and Savant M quit the band after our first European tour and Gortheon joined us with his vast bass skills. We released Superior Massacre as our second release brutality in 2002.

Gothique: You haven't released an album since 2002. What is the reason for this hiatus?

Secthdamon: The main reason for this is we have alot to do with Zyklon since I and Destructhor play both in that band and have done alot of travelling around the world with touring and so forth. We are also having a hard time finding a place to rehearse. But we are working on materiall for a 3rd album and hopefully will get finished soon as possible but Zyklon takes alot of our time..

Gothique: I hear a new album is in the works. Have you completed the writing? Where are you going to record it?

Secthdamon: We are half way in the process. We have done some pre productions of the songs and it will of course not be a disapointment for our fans. I think we will go back to Akkerhaugen again and maybe mix the album in another studio.

Gothique: Master V left the band after the "Deathmachine" album. What happened there? Was it an amicable split?

Secthdamon: We disagreed about Myrkskogs musical direction. Me and destructhor was getting more interested in the brutal death metal scene and Master V wanted us to be more Cyber or something. We where not interested using silver paint and that shit. Myrkskog is not Cyber Punk!

Gothique: There are some stylistic differences between your last two albums. Deathmachine" had more of a black metal feel to it, while "Superior" is more on the Death metal side. Is this a direct result of Master V's absence?

Secthdamon: Not really but some of the songs on Deathmachine were old songs from our demo tape and we were a Black Metal band in the 90`s. If you listen to songs like Morphine Mangled Torture and Deathmachine you can hear the development are coming towards Death Metal even there. In Superior Massacre there are still Black Metal riffing but extreme riffs. Master V never made any riffs, he made lyrics. If it would been up to Master V we would istead become a Techno Cyber Rock Punk band or whatever...

Gothique: How does the song writing process go? Is there one person who does most of the writing or is it shared?

Secthdamon: We are sharing the writing this time. Superior massacre was almost Destructhors solo album hahaha. I made one song on that album called Over the Gore. This time I am writing almost half of the materiall. Even Gortheon have some cool riffs adding to this album. It is going to be more variation on the songs on the future album.

Gothique: How do you feel about the future of the Norwegian metal scene?

Secthdamon: The future metal scene in norway looks great. More band turning up and I get suprised at times even. Im a bit tired of Norwegian Black metal but there are alot of new Black Metal bands of the newer generation who has turned back to the old and obscure black metal and thats cool. I would almost expect that they would be breeds of Dimmu Borgir but no. They all seem to have interest in whats old school. Even more Death metal bands is turning up too. Brutal ones even.

Gothique: When did you first get into metal? Which bands have influenced your musical taste the most?

Secthdamon: I got into metal in 1986 when I got introduced to W.A.S.P. and Twisted Sister. I developed and got into Metallica, Slayer and those kind of bands. And it went on to Obituary and Deicide and other bands like them. Got into the Black metal scene with bands like Emperor and Dark Funeral for some years. And now I am into Death Metal again only this time with bands like Decrepit Birth and Deeds of Flesh and so on. All these bands have influenced me alot.

Gothique: Do you have any tour plans in the near future? When are we going to see you on this side of the Atlantic?

Secthdamon: I dont think we are touring before the new album has been released. I hope we are coming to your side then. It would have been awsome!

Gothique: Are you looking forward to playing the Hammerslag Vinterblot festival in a few weeks?

Secthdamon: I got this interview a bit late but I can tell you how it went. It was a good show due the lack of rehearsal. We didnt play all that bad. We delivered a brutal show and the audience was great and seemed to enjoy themselves very much. It was fun! I hope they will keep on doing the Vinterblot for many years to come.

Gothique: If you could choose anyone, which bands would you like to tour with?

Secthdamon: Right now I would like to tour with Decrepit Birth and a swedish band called Sanctification. Totaly awsome bands and they have incredible drummers. Waching these bands every night would not be a problem hahaha!!!!

Gothique: Thank you for the interview. Anything more you'd like to say to our readers?

Secthdamon: Thank YOU for the interview hehe. Ok readers! Look out for our new album hopefully coming out during the year. Thanks for reading this interview.
