In our ongoing Hammerslag Festival coverage and in an effort to help raise awareness about the bands on the bill, we sent out some questions to Draugstafur, who are playing the December 17th leg of the festival. Vocalist Storm was cool enough to respond, and here's what he had to say:
deathbringer: Draugstafur is a fairly new band, having only been around since 2004. Can you give us some background on how you got together and what is the significance of the band's name?
Storm: Draugstafur started in the summer 2004, with Storm and Hansi as band leaders. we had several auditions to get other members and ended up with a lineup that brought us far. but in the summer 05 the drummer we had at the moment quit, and we hooked up with Cato Jensen (Sarcoma Inc, Cutthroat, Lucid Fear). He was exactly the drummer we needed. He's got an enormous attitude and plays on a professional level! So with this lineup we have created our own attitude and sound, and are ready to enter the Hammerslag Festival!
The meaning of the name Draugstafur is an old rune or galder as we call it here (sorry for my bad english). Draugstafur is really a ritual taken from the old nordic religions. if you cut the sign called Draugstafur into a wooden stick, and covered it with your own blood, you will recieve the ability to speak and communicate with ghosts and other dead things.
deathbringer: You recently replaced your departed drummer. How has the new drummer, Cato, fit into the band and does he bring any different influences or dynamics to the band?
Storm: Cato, as i mentioned before, is a professional drummer. he fits very good with the others in the band, and has lifted the music a lot! his creativity and aggressive playing have made the music extreme, which is very good!
deathbringer: Do any of the band members have formal music training?
Storm: no, we are all self trained.
deathbringer: Originating from the same town, Tønsberg, Norway, as the Hammerslag Vinterblot, does this festival have any special meaning to you?
Storm: Yes of course it has! the metal scene in Tønsberg aint that big, so that Almar has managed to create a festival like this, demands all kind of respect. it is a very good chance for bands that play well to get their name out.
deathbringer: Having only recorded a demo so far, how many songs have you written and have to pick from for your live shows?
Storm: the so called demo we recorded in late 2004, wasn't meant to be given out. at that time we had a session drummer which didn't manage to play the way we wanted, so we recorded it just for fun and to get more studio experience. with Cato we have written 7 songs, and were are playing all of them live.
deathbringer: If you could tour with any other band, who would you want to tour with?
Storm: Anyone who are into metal. but if we could choose one band, it would be Nile!
deathbringer: What bands have influenced on your sound and style the most?
Storm: we are very different individuals playing, so i cant really answer to that. we don't tinhk about that when we create our music. we just play what we want to. its extreme, and that's what's it all about!
deathbringer: When do you plan to enter the studio to record a full-length album?
Storm: we are planning to enter the studio in the beginning of 2006, to create a demo which we will use all our efforts on. this demo we will sell and send to record companies in hope to be given a contract and more gigs.
deathbringer: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Do you have any last words for our readers?
Storm: Stay metal! and check out Draugstafur in the music contest Emerganza, which will be arranged in the states and in europe. A pint of beer will be given to all those who helps us win this fucking contest! and i will thank the Metal Underground for supporting the Hammerslag Festival 05, and setting up this interview!
