There was a news story not too long ago where a guy from Obscura was stating that the bassist always gets the short end of the stick in death and black metal, which is usually true. Why do bands even have bassists if they are going to put them so low in the mix that they can't be heard? With that in mind, what bands have you heard where the bassists actually get to do something? Off the top of my head:

Obscura, The Faceless, Face of Ruin, Opeth

Any other recommendations?

Sometimes you can hear it with Cannibal Corpse...but I think the guy from Obscura mentioned that.

off the top of my head: 3, nevermore (some of the time), primus, and orange 9mm (old numetal-ish band).

I think the real question is which genres generally do screw the bassist and which of those bands don't. It's pretty much a given that groove metal and nu-metal feature their bassists usually, and most prog or classic metal wouldn't totally shaft them. But there's a lot of death metal and black metal bands who do shaft the bassist. Thrash can go either way, but most good ones don't shaft their bassists.

Good point DB, Obituary comes to mind. Duh, Slayer!! Rarely do you hear anything Tom plays.

Rush, Iron Maiden.

ap1 -- Actually, you can hear Tom's bass throughout almost the entire "Hell Awaits" album. I think that may be the reason that that's one of my favorite Slayer albums, actually.
