I definitely agree with Amon Amarth - Pursuit of the Vikings. That song is epic.

i'd also add:

Norther - Frozen Angel

Mar 23, 2010 9:14 PM ET #7 (permalink)

^I would hesitate to call Norther death metal, that's a good pick though.

Mar 23, 2010 9:27 PM ET #8 (permalink)

i guess it's melodic death, but still an awesome song, thanks!

Im gonna have to go with (and Im most likely wrong here but...):

Kataklysm---Serenity of Fire
Anything by Bolt Thrower and Death would be a good pick too.

Mar 23, 2010 10:37 PM ET #10 (permalink)

kataklysm is - in shadows and dust
that track just annihilates humanity

fot me that norther doesn't fit at all it's more like melo thrash more like children of bodom

Yeah I've never really been able to accept Bodom as death metal though they are often labeled as so. Bodom themselves have never really acknowledged any death metal bands as influences, however this is debatable. Their sound draws more from thrash, black, neo-classical and 80's hair metal in my mind.

Mar 23, 2010 11:43 PM ET #12 (permalink)

I'm not so sure about that. I can see where you are coming from, but by the same token, I think that there are aspects of Norther (such as the vocals) that are much more in line with death metal than with thrash metal. And also, Children of Bodom and Norther aren't really that similar; they both have distinctive sounds.

Mar 24, 2010 12:01 AM ET #13 (permalink)

I dunno dude, I'm listening to "Going Nowhere" by Norther right now and this just screams thrash metal, there's more to a genre than the vocal style and musically these guys definitely owe more to thrash metal than death. As far as the comparison to Bodom goes, their pretty damn similar. I would definitely put them in the same category, yes the two bands do have differences in their sound but I would say the similarities outnumber them, vocals sound very much alike (for the most part at least), hooky melodic thrashy riffs, keybords and synths (Norther aren't as heavy on the keybord solos or harmonies), and they both like to throw in a few slower heavy parts here and there. All around they are rather alike.

I've only heard early stuff from Norther which was a while ago, but I did remember it was COBish. Both sound like newer styled bands which you can't stuff into a prexisting one word genre. But that aside, I hesitate to call anything thrash that can't be lined up besides Exodus on BBB and say it sounds alike.

Mar 24, 2010 12:41 AM ET #15 (permalink)

That leaves out a lot then, Slayer doesn't sound that much like Exodus, particularly Bonded By Blood for that matter.

Mar 24, 2010 3:00 AM ET #16 (permalink)

don't really listen to COB nor Norther so being the ignorant asshole i am i will say they sound alike
