I've been listening to a lot of blackened death lately and the genre has really grown on me. Unfortunately, I don't know many good bands in the genre. So far, I'm aware of (and really like) Behemoth, Crionics, Vader, Zyklon, Vesania, and Melechesh. What other bands would you recommend? Perhaps the term "blackened death" is a more specific genre than what I'm using it as, but basically I'm looking for anything that has a substantive amount of both black and death metal elements in it.

Thanks!

Sup Douchebag, lol sorry - Hmmm well I'm not familiar with too many "blackened" death metal bands, I'm more into straight forward death metal, but my first suggestion would be Dissection. They're pretty good, little thrashy sometimes, a little melo-death, solid band. Belphegor aren't band, Impaled Nazarene. I'm really not the right person for this actually cuz I really don't know any myself.

Hey Doucher, have you listened to Goatwhore at all? They're probably my favorite in this specific genre, but some others for you to check out:

Hate Forrest - they're split up now but Battlefields was a really good album
Beyond Shadows - strong NWOBHM influences with these guys, and a little melodeath at times
Naglfar - I just discovered this band not too long ago, listen to Black God Aftermath from their Sheol album

Hope this helped a little!

Thanks LivingDeaDbeat and Spaghetti Motel... I really like the songs I've heard so far from your recommendations. I like them all, especially Goatwhore, Hate Forest, and Belphegor.

yeah..Belphegor and Goatwhore are pretty great recommendations...
Panzerchrist, Mitochondrion (CAN), Dawn of Azazel, Azarath

Some good Black/Death (or Blackened Death) albums

Darkified, Panzerchrist, Goatwhore, Rudra (they got some folk influences going on, but more Indian. Tight shit), Perversor, Necrophobic (the best band in the black/death game, shit like Dissection, Morbid Angel, and others were influenced by these boys), Proclamation, Nailed God, Grotesque (precursor to At the Gates, FUCKING LEGENDARY shit right here, ladies and gents), Hail, Belphegor, Impiety (kings of asian death/black metal, yo), Cenotaph (mexican one, shares members with The Chasm and Incantation), Acheron ('nother legendary band, alongside Necrophobic and Grotesque they were one of the first and IMO their debut album is THE best blackdeath album), Archgoat, Infester (oooohooooo fucking putrid shit, close as the world will come to brutal blackened death =D), Conquerer.... and thats it I guess

Some o' these can be called war metal, but I lump all war metal in with black/death so ya...

Fuck yes! Thank you all... I really like what I've heard so far.

I haven't seen Dragonlord mentioned, but they are sorta blackened thrash. I'd love to hear of some more blackened thrash bands myself.

lDb - I was just going to recommend Naglfar when I saw this thread. Stirling band imo, Spoken Words of Venom is sweet. Would love to see them live.

I think Skeletonwitch's album "Beyond the Permafrost" is a good example of blackened death metal.

Naglfar's album "Sheol" is the shit!" in my opinion.

How about Satan's Host? I dont know if they are exactly what you're looking for....but whatever.

God dethroned look at their mid era albums.
The legion, Nunslaughter, Akercocke
Here is a few bands that dont have a lot of death metal but are still really good
Rotting Christ, Valkyrja, Sigh

Mar 11, 2010 9:56 PM ET #12 (permalink)

Sigh is hit or miss with me. I bought their album "Hangman's Hymn" and I loved it. But then I bought the one after that, I cant remember the name at the moment, and I didnt really like it at all. Maybe cuz Hangman's Hymn was a bit different than the one after it but thats Sigh's way of metal I guess.

Rotting Christ kicks so much ass. Ive always liked them.

I dont really think Ackercocke is very blackened, is it? I have their Ampbeauty album (I fucking love it!) and its just straight forward death metal with a lot of groove.

@MeggidaanSummit, I think Ackercocke is blackened-Death Metal at least they´re mixture these genres with some avant garde influencces and, I think you´re confused about ´Ampeauty´s Pungent Stench album, no the previous one.

Zyklon and Behexen are great bands. Behexen has a rotten, black, death metal sound, while zyklon is a bit more refined,. Great stuff though

Jun 18, 2010 8:46 AM ET #17 (permalink)

Belphegor and Goatwhore are amazing bands...Goatwhore live are insane!

You should also consider SYN and BLASPHEMOUS CREATION, they are two great up and coming bands

Jun 18, 2010 9:30 AM ET #18 (permalink)

I agree with ApocryphaRecords. Goatwhore is truly a sight on stage. Their costumes are fkn sick but then again i guess that's just the blackened DM aesthetic.

Jun 18, 2010 8:09 PM ET #19 (permalink)

yo, i just wanna point out, skeletonwitch is NOT blackened death metal. They are obviously powervikinclassicblackeneddeaththrash. Duh. Fuckin simpletons. Awesome band though, both albums. And azarath is a great pick for any fans of behemoth. Same drummer in fact.. So yeah, do that.
