We've got one for football, American football and boxing, so why not a thread about the great sport that is rugby? Anyone been watching the Six Nations? And to all our colonial cousins, do America and Canada play rugby much?

Feb 8, 2010 12:14 AM ET #2 (permalink)

My cousin plays high school rugby. It seems like a fun sport but I don't know much about it really. Got the general idea but don't know all the details and such like I do for baseball or football.

It's weird, even though were a rugby mad nation we don't hear that much about the six nations in the sports news. Until someone wins and what not. NZ's hosting the World Cup next year, I'll be able to walk 20 minutes to the new stadium and see a game if you believe that.

South Africa have been dominating a lot lately, but truthfully as long as we beat the Aussies NZers don't mind. The whole "food poisoning us out of the world cup" thing has mostly died down.... mostly haha...

I like rugby just fine. Aussie rules football is weird though.

Feb 8, 2010 10:59 AM ET #5 (permalink)

I like rugby, but like most of my statesmen, I don't know much about it because it's rarely televised here. Aussie rules actually looks hilarious, what little i've seen.

I loved whatever bastardized version that we were taught and played in middle school and high school. But I have no idea how close to actual rugby that was. I learned more from watching my son's soccer instructors teach him at age 3 and 5 than I knew about actual soccer prior (terrible PE program for soccer apparently).

I've only seen Aussie rules football once and since I was only about seven, I didn't give it a second thought. I'm sure it's just fine though.

Lol doesn't surprise me DB. I'm sure our basketball program sucks ass. We also played Rounders in PE which is as close to Baseball as the English get. I think the only difference is that we take the bat when we run. That and since we were at school there would usually be a fight between two fielders. Playing rugby at school wasn't so much rugby either, as it was kids beating the shit out of each other. I remember there was one guy in my year who was so hard that if he had the rugby ball, people would actually run out of his way to let him score a try, and if they didn't you saw them on the floor really quickly.

Oz: The guys in the white suits and cowboy hats are fucking hilarious. I think they're officials of some sort.

I'll only bother with rugby when its the six nations or world cup..

Although i'd love to seen the all blacks or Aussies play England at Twickenham one day.

I'd much prefer to see tottenham play at wembley

Looking forward to the super 14s this year; from what I've seen so far the new rules (not that I understand them at all) should make for a lot more running rugby and hopefully fewer scrum resets. Anyone see the Chiefs/Lions games? Nine tries apiece!

Hey Cynic! My dad burnt me a copy of Invictus but I cant bear to watch it!

Feb 22, 2010 5:08 PM ET #11 (permalink)

the states dont show shit for rugby unfortuantly. its really hard to get cultured here in the states...id also love to watch cricket so i can finally learn the rules and such. but rugby is friggin awesome, i would watch that more than american football for sure. the american football is getting puss-ified...cant hit anyone without a damn penalty these days. ridiculous!

Feb 23, 2010 4:52 PM ET #12 (permalink)

There is only one way to learn the rules of cricket.... from VINCENT PRICE! Greatest cricket video ever.

Hey KissTheBlade - you a kiwi? Hopefully I'll see some Highlanders games this year but most likely they'll break my heart again. Haven't seen Invictus yet but should be interesting.

Feb 23, 2010 5:52 PM ET #13 (permalink)

Hey there Cynic: yes indeed; born and (high) schooled in Dunedin and lived and worked from Invercargill to Chch. Lived in Australia since 1985 and dont get home nearly as often as what I'd like. I have a big soft spot for the Highlanders but really I'll barrack for any Kiwi team. Should get to see a few games next year when Melbourne gets the 16th franchise (altho considering how much they charge to get into a sporting ground over here, I'll need another job).

Feb 26, 2010 2:21 PM ET #14 (permalink)

Off to watch Wales vs France in a bit. Should be a good one.

Feb 27, 2010 12:29 AM ET #15 (permalink)

thanks cynic. appreciate it.

Feb 27, 2010 12:41 AM ET #16 (permalink)

Like I said, I like rugby, but cricket is just wierd. Kinda like Jai Alai, a game that makes absolutely no sense.

Feb 27, 2010 6:41 AM ET #17 (permalink)

I suppose cricket is a little weird. I'm not a fan though. I liked playing it at school or in the park when I was a kid (tried playing it in the street once but people weren't too happy about their cars being hit with balls!) but when it comes to watching cricket, I just can't. Boring as hell.

Never got to see the Wales-France game last night because the pub was absolutely packed but I spoke to a friend who went to see it and from what I gather I missed a hell of a game. France were winning 20-0 at half time and the final score was France 23 - Wales 20.

Since the football thread was taking a turn in the Rugby direction, I thought I'd bring this to the front lol. Isn't the World Cup being held in New Zealand next year?

Jul 13, 2010 8:47 PM ET #19 (permalink)

I believe it is OZMAN.

Australia for cup! Hellyeah! haha

Stuff Aussie Rules man.
That game is soo stupid.
Rubgy is good football.

Jul 13, 2010 8:54 PM ET #20 (permalink)

I'd like to think England can do it, but at least if they don't then Rugby fans won't get on their high horse again. Seriously, English rugby fans are arrogant motherfuckers.

Jul 13, 2010 8:58 PM ET #21 (permalink)

Yep, there's a few world cup games being played here in Dunedin, might try see England play. I hope NZ can pull through, we are consistently ranked no 1. pre tournament but have consistently choked against teams like France. I think there's plenty of time to see South Africa or Australia in good form to take it out though.

England are all over the place - they beat Australia, but then lost to the NZ Maori team later??

Jul 13, 2010 9:03 PM ET #22 (permalink)

I'd say New Zealand have a good chance, didn't they beat South Africa and Wales recently?

Jul 13, 2010 9:08 PM ET #23 (permalink)

Yeah there's been quite a lot of rugby at the moment - we could have played better against Ireland but we were pretty convincing against Wales and SA (though I still rate SA). That was the first game of the tri-nations where NZ, Aus and SA each play the others twice.

Also, more arrogant than a normal Englishman? I don't believe it. :P

Jul 13, 2010 9:39 PM ET #24 (permalink)

South Africa is a team too watch.
They are always dangerous when it comes to football.
I'd love to see another Aus Vs SA match soon.

New Zealand are looking good Cynic.
I won't be cheering them on if Australia collapses.

Australia and England all the way!

Jul 14, 2010 7:50 AM ET #25 (permalink)

Haha, yeah most English rugby fans are constantly pissed off that rugby isn't as big as football so they don't shut the fuck up about how rugby is better and football is for idiots, blah blah blah. It's just annoying to listen to.
