CoH, Vital Remains are ridiculously good man, i'm glad more people like em now, still theyre pretty underrated imo. Dechristianize has to be one of my favourite death metal albums of all time, up there next to Heartwork for sure. |

Lord: Meshuggah is Math Metal isnt it? |

eh, thats really just splitting hairs, to me when i hear Math metal i think more of the process used to write the music instead of what genre. i mean i like to think that a genre is depicted by the tonality, chord structure and chord progression and atmosphere of a song not the time signature. i mean there's so many metal bands that use "math" in writing but some are grindy some are death and even some are a little black metal. your right though they are straight up math, but their early stuff isn't really that mathy. To me they sound like a death metal band who uses math to write their songs. they center it around a 4/4 core so thats why i just shove it under the death metal blanket. I try not to break everything down into tiny genre's as to avoid being to biased. i've always wanted to be one of those "its really all just metal" guy's, but i have a problem with over analyzing so ive made little way's of trying to avoid that, like for example considering meshuggah just Death metal. or really their just a metal band. or to quote my grandma "that must be that hard rock stuff like metallica and nirvana". (to which i just nod and say sure, close enough) Death Math Metal, and thats hard to say 30 times fast without fucking up. |

Lord: i see what you mean, i just always called them Math, and i like the Sub Genres cause it like helps me to have some idea of what a new band i find would sound like. so if a band is proclaimed to be Melodic Death Metal then i can be like "oh so they sound something like Dark Flood or Into Eternity, so they might be good". you know what i mean? like im not a genre nazi or anything it just helps me determine if certain bands are worth checking out |

yea i see what you mean. sub genre's are a good thing i think, its a great way to organize and find that specific sound your into. |

Lord Opeth is far from beeing called death metal, nor Meshuggah or Ihsahn is. |

well i disagree...a bit...i typed progressive and added opeth and brainfarted and immediatly grouped ihsahn in with opeth. i admit ihsahn isnt death metal, although after does lean more towards death than black this time around in my opinion, but i think opeth and meshuggah are very death metal. i mean just from interviews ive read over the years they both have a mission statement to be death metal bands. you can go on and on about what you consider death metal and why i disagree and what i consider death metal and why you disagree, but if you take the heavy side of opeth and were to put that into a catagory, i would put it under death metal. and meshuggah is clearly a death metal band math or no math |
