Favorite--melodic death, neo-thrash, and glam metal

who would be considered a power metal band?

Nov 6, 2009 12:20 AM ET #14 (permalink)

^Dragonforce. Manowar. Gamma Ray. Blind Guardian. Stratovarius. Helloween. Custard. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I apologise for mentioning Dragonforce.

I think if we leave out the -cores, my least favourite would have to be straight Death. Like Cannibal Corpse. I just don't get it. Soon as you mix it with tech or melodic or prog or whatever I love it, tho, so... I dunno, whatever.

Thanks psythe! I always wondered what subgenre they fell under. I understand why it's been so many people's least favorite now lol

Least: Core

I actually really like Custard, but yeah, not a big Power Metal fan, definitely one of my least favs. I probably wouldn't mind it so much if they didn't insist on having lyrics about retarded shit like Tolkien fantasies. Great books, and all, but with lyrics like that, and vocals like that, and ridiculous solos like that, Power Metal just comes off as over-the-top and silly in most cases for me. As I said, Custard I really like though. Exception to every rule, I guess.

I haven't heard an U.D.O. album since "Thunderball." I liked him a little better as Accept's frontman.

Nov 6, 2009 4:31 PM ET #20 (permalink)

I wouldn't say that Pantera belongs in the Power Metal genre....if anything they are more thrash than any other but I myself has always considered them the straight Heavy Metal

I actually think genres are pretty handy when it comes to helping find and describe bands, it's just that I can't really pick a favorite genre of music, let alone a sub-genre of metal. About 60% of the stuff in my library is metal, but I listen to metal about 43.57% of the time, haha. It all depends on my mood.
