How one defines underground in relation to metal is entirely based on personal opinion and perspective.

People who listen to metallica, five finger death punch or korn might consider Lamb of god an underground band.

But most people in general who listen to metal seriously consider Lamb of God mainstream. You see?

As one of the latter group of people, I would make 3 catagories of underground bands.

1. Relatively popular bands within the underground. They are known by a majority of metalheads, either by fandom or at least being heard of frequently, But almost completely unknown by MTV watchers or readers of Rolling Stone magazine. Usually fairly well established with a few records under their belt and normally headlining concerts.
Example bands: Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Cannibal Corpse, High on Fire, Gojira, Napalm Death, etc.

2. Bands with a reasonable level of exposure, but yet to break out to the level of aforementioned bands. People know who they are, but they dont have extreme widespread fandom, either because of mediocrity of the music, very little exposure from their label or self- advertisement, or just innaccsseability of the music in general. and sometimes simply because its at an early point in their career. Usually support acts to group 1.
Example Bands: Goatwhore, Psyopus, Skeletonwitch, After the Burial, Converge, Toxic Holocaust, and maybe even Dillinger Escape Plan, though they might be a group 1 band at this point.

3. Nobody knows who the fuck these bands are. This can be anywhere from being completely unknown level, like say...2 myspace fans and some dude at the bar that thinks you guys are alrite, to bands that are actually selling records and touring but havnt really gotten noticed beyond a dedicated legion of fans and their hometown and maybe their moms, even if said mothers dont actually like the music. worst case scenario, they play neighborhood shows from the garage or open mic band nights. Best case is either touring with other local bands in the area or opening up for larger acts for exposure purposes.

example bands(from the best case scenario lol): Lazarus AD, Landmine Marathon, Extreme Noise Terror, Nasum, Pig destroyer(maybe group two), Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, Wormrot, Maruta, Allegaeon(this band rocks tits btw)
Notice how many grindcore bands are in group 3? lol

Then again you have groups and bands that sit completely out of these catagories, or at least my ability to catagorize them. Naked City, Blotted Science, Alestorm, Mastodon, Down, Suffocation, Necrophagist. I just dont know where to put these. :P

At the very least, i just listed a shit-ton of bands, from a fairly varied pool of genres I think, so at least somebody has something to listen to that they didnt before. i guess, I'm kinda helpful, as long as my rambling droll didnt scare anyone away.

Now Playing: Vital Remains- Born to Rape the World (because sometimes you need to take a break from the really heavy stuff....)

Goddamn but that was a brilliant post FAN :P

I could copy my music library and stick probably a 1000 bands that I think fit into group 3, and the same for several hundred that fit into both 1 and 2 (covers hard rock and pop punk too)

And I don't listen to much, if any, hardcore or proper Punk both of which are huge genres. Or much death/metal/sad/emo-core which seem to have a slew of bands.

Seems that no matter how much I find and listen to, there seems to be more and more out there. Even the genres I'm heavily into - everything black, tech/prog/straight death, lotta prog and post-metal, as well as straight up heavy metal and hard rock still have so much more for me to listen to.

It's disheartening in a way since I'm a music hoarder lol

Lol, damn I love it when you post FAN, you're a funnier version of me :P

You should all listen to my band, it's so underground it doesn't even properly exist yet.

Dec 9, 2010 7:22 PM ET #6 (permalink)

^Brootal dude. Let me know when you guys actually release music so I can stop listening, becasue I like to stay Kvlt.

You guys have no idea how much time I wasted typing that damn thing, so thank you. I havent been on here in a while so I'm posting a lot of long shit to make up for it I guess since I finally have access to a proper computer. Nice to know I'm not wasting my fucking time. I'll be back to my regularly scheduled trolling and one-sentence witty remarks soon enough.

Now playing: Metallica- The Thing that should not be.

Revocation is crazy! I love them, Im waiting to recibe Infernal Glory demo of hyban draco I will tell you how it is

Yeah I don't think Lamb of God can be considered underground by any standard. Underground can definitely be used to varying degrees like anything though, slightly underground: Strapping Young Lad, very underground: Aspid. Then of course there's all the little local bands 12 people have heard of from obscure towns and cities in third world countries.

great fucking post FAN. i agree with cynic lmao still love ur posts too cynic tho. u do tend to be funny too but just in a witty, sarcastic way lol

i don't think i could name a single band that would be considered "underground" (at least that stand point of being from miami) that no one here on MU would at least have heard of. closest thing could possibly be florida's own gothenburg-style melodic death metal band, the absence.
