SXSW 2014 Day Two: Relapse Records, Monte Pittman

SXSW can be an overwhelming endeavor. From word-of-mouth parties and secret performances to unofficial day shows that the festival doesn't promote, planning takes more than cursory glances. After last year's exhaustive outing, I learned a lesson: keep it simple (stupid) and don't over plan. One best experiences South By Southwest by staying in a downtown hotel and taking pedicabs (or real car cabs depending on the extent of travel). For only $2 a day, a bus is the way to go for Austinites, as long as they're not staying past midnight. More...

Pyrrhon Streaming Album's Title Track

The experimental death metal perpetrators in New York City's Pyrrhon (pronounced peer-on) are pleased to soil ears with the title track from their forthcoming new long player, "The Mother Of Virtues," due out April 1st. Give it a listen below, courtesy of MetalSucks.net.

Comments vocalist Doug Moore of the title track: "I've seen some people say that we aren't 'really' a death metal band, and this song is pretty good evidence in favor of that claim. It's also one of the more ambitious songs we've ever recorded, structurally speaking. Good luck."

The album was recorded by Ryan Jones (Today Is The Day, Mutilation Rites) and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice). More...

Pyrrhon Reveals Album Details

New York City progressive death metal collective and recent Relapse signees, Pyrrhon (pronounced peer-on), emerge from the urban decay with a nightmarish offering of physically and psychologically mauling extreme metal.

Titled "The Mother Of Virtues," the band's sophomore full-length is a mind-bending fusion of clanging death metal, surreal psychedelia, dark jazz rhythms, and delirious storytelling. The album was recorded with Ryan Jones (Today Is The Day, Mutilation Rites) and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice). The album is due out April 1st in North America and March 31st worldwide.

Elaborates vocalist Doug Moore: "We focused on capturing an organic, spontaneous sound on this album. Consequently, we tracked most of the album live; most of its quieter moments and solo breaks are partially or entirely improvised. We like to let the chips fall where they may."

Sear your ears with teaser track "Balkanized," currently streaming in the player below. The album's full track listing is as follows:

1. The Oracle of Nassau
2. White Flag
3. Sleeper Agent

Pyrrhon Comments On Joining Relapse

Relapse Records is extremely proud to announce the signing of New York City avant-garde, technical death metal quartet Pyrrhon (pronounced "peer-on").

Formed in 2008, Pyrrhon (Dylan DiLella - guitar, Erik Malave - bass, Alex Cohen - drums, Doug Moore - vocals) has released one EP ("Fever Kingdoms" - 2010) and one LP ("An Excellent Servant But a Terrible Master" - 2011, available for streaming below) via The Path Less Traveled Records and Selfmadegod Records respectively.

Relapse will release the band's upcoming sophomore album titled "The Mother of Virtues" in early 2014. The label comments:

"A nightmarish blend of clanging death metal with surreal psychedelic elements, jazz rhythms, and delirious storytelling, The Mother of Virtues was tracked and mixed by Ryan Jones (Today is the Day, Mutilation Rites, Wetnurse) at Saint Vitus Bar and The Sound City, Brooklyn in May and June 2013. The record was then mastered by Colin Marston (Krallice, Gorguts) at The Thousand Caves Studios, Brooklyn, in August 2013. More album details will be revealed shortly."

Vocalist Doug Moore also commented on the signing: "When I was 15, I bought a copy of Relapse's Contaminated 5.0 sampler CD. Through it, I encountered Suffocation, Neurosis, Pig Destroyer, Human Remains, and countless other great bands for the first time. We are thrilled and honored to work with a label whose output has done so much to drive metal forward, and which has meant so much to all four of us over the years." More...
