With Sonar closing, the location of 2013's Maryland DeathFest XI was up in the air. The organizers have finally announced that the fest will be held in the same location as last year, and will be expanded. Maryland DeathFest XI will take place in Baltimore, Maryland on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, 2013. Tickets go on sale on October 15th at 12 pm (EST). You can read the entire update below:
We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.
In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.
The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will allow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.
We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.

The extreme music world is about to get a much needed cinderblock to the face as the mighty Pig Destroyer has entered the studio to record a 5th full-length record and first album in over five years. The band is self-producing and recording the new album at guitarist Scott Hull's Visceral Sound Studios in Alexandria, VA.
According to a press release, the as-yet-untitled album is a "return to a raw, primitive sound and will feature 19 songs of Pig Destroyer' signature misanthropic grind." A late 2012 release is expected via Relapse Records.
This time around, Pig Destroyer has enlisted the help of Adam Jarvis (Misery Index) to lend inhuman drumming skills to the aural hatred. Now a full time member, Scott Hull commented on the addition of Adam:
"Tracking the drums happened this week and I'm honestly amazed at how Adam stepped up to the task of learning some challenging shit outside of his standard comfort zone. He came into the studio ready to destroy and destroy he did. And in the haze of long studio hours he never settled for a bad take. He's a real soldier. Adam has helped breathe new life into the band and we feel like we are starting fresh. Everyone here is excited for people to check out the new jams."
Additionally, Pig Destroyer has been confirmed for the UK's Damnation Festival this November with numerous other dates and festivals to be announced shortly.

Underground journalist Ryan Bartek has just re-released the book "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" as a free PDF Download. Featuring new cover art and a redesigned look, this new version finally does visual justice to the original.
The product of one year spent traveling the USA underground, "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" is a genre-bending work of nonfiction that is at once a road book and a journalistic expose on American counterculture as well.
In "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" Bartek makes it through 35 states, spends 600+ hours on Greyhounds while interviewing a variety of celebrities, musicians, journalists and travelers. Covering all forms of counterculture with a heavy emphasis on extreme metal & hardcore punk, “The Big Shiny Prison” refuses to become a stereotypical “music book.” It instead falls into the category of the autobiographical road novel using a relevant approach that appeals to both the average reader & the critical academia.
Originally released on 11/15/09, the book features interviews/appearances by DWARVES, Brutal Truth, Pig Destroyer, MDC, Repulsion, Psyopus, Cephalic Carnage, Downtown Brown, HIMSA, Atheist, Foxy Shazam, STALAGGH, Absymal Dawn, Ludicra, The Angelic Process, AxCx & many more. More...
Ryan Bartek has made his new book "The Big Shiny Prison" available as a free PDF download. The book can be found at this location. "The Big Shiny Prison" is an expose on various forms of underground music ranging from extreme metal to punk to rock. Interviews are included in the book with bands such as Cephalic Carnage, Pig Destroyer, and Abysmal Dawn. Bartek issued the following statement about the book:
"My name is Ryan Bartek. For the past 3 years I’ve sacrificed everything for the successful completion of this project. I spent a year on the road, another year completing & shopping it, and another year of total rejection. It is only karmically fitting that both the demise of magazine & book publishing come in one fell swoop.
"I was never in it for the money, nor the aspect of celebrity. I have spent an upwards of $10,000 on it, which I remark only to underline my absolute sincerity. No one would deny its quality -- but the raw nature of the work, as well as its excessive length, made it impossible to pigeon hole or successfully shop. Nothing quite like it has ever surfaced, at least not in the format I’ve undertaken.
"After this seemingly endless struggle, I have decided to offer it to the public domain. While I retain the copyright/trademark, I both encourage and support file sharing. It is my only wish that this manuscript be circulated & appreciated. Perhaps when all is said and done, someone might offer a physical print run."
