Ghost Reschedules Show Due To Papal Visit

In a move the band and press writers must have been eagerly awaiting since Ghost's inception, the band led by anti-pop Papa Emeritus III has reschedule show due to....wait for it... an actual papal visit! The band comments:

"We wish to inform you that due to Frankie's visit next month in Philadelphia, we received a letter informing us that Ghost fans would not be able to use public transportation or park their cars next Union Transfer.

"In hopes to ensure that each and every Ghost fan can attend this show, we have decided to move the Philadelphia concert at Union Transfer to Tuesday, September 29th. Tickets are still valid."

Weirdly, there is an entire website dedicated to just this one visit by Pope Francis (or "Frankie" as Ghost puts it) - if you feel the need to hear an old guy in a funny hat who's never had sex tell you how to live, details are available over here.

Kerry King On Ghost: "I Just Hate The Music"

In a video with Artisan News Service (which can be seen here if the YouTube player below won't load properly), Kerry King of Slayer discusses his feelings towards the cross-genre megastar band Ghost, which has divided the metal community between its sound and imagery.

King comments:

"Dude, I love the imagery. I love it. I just hate the fucking music. I like them. You know, they've been on many tours with us. I just, I can't. And I tried. I wanna like them, and I can't.

"I got their CD from Brian Slagel from Metal Blade. It was when Gary Holt first started playing with us, and I picked up Gary. And I'm, like, 'Brian said this is awesome, man.'

"So we put it in, going to practice. It wasn't awesome. It wasn't awesome for me. I'm, like, 'Well, maybe just the first song sucks.' And we went to the next one. It's just not for me... And I've tried so hard."

Slayer's new album "Repentless" is set to drop on September 11th (check out the title track here), while Ghost just returned with Papa Emeritus III and will release the "Meliora" album on August 21st. If you missed Ghost's latest video, "Cirice" is still available at this location. More...

...And Justice For Art Presents: Look-Alike Covers

While the online community And Justice For Art prepares for the imminent release next month of their long-awaited book Stories About Heavy Metal Album Covers, they keep delighting Metal Underground readers with their series "Look-alike Covers." This time the focus is on Swedish Dark Rock/Metallers, Ghost BC (aka Ghost).

By now, it's well now the Swedish band's affinity for creating album covers based on iconic movie posters. This episode of And Justice For Art's Look-Alike-Covers explores these artworks and its origins.

Opus Eponymous

The cover art for the Swedish band's acclaimed debut album is attributed to a design entity known as Basilevs 254. The overall composition and ominous atmosphere is partly based on the classic poster for the Stephen King's vampire TV mini-series "Salem's Lot," which was also edited as a theatrical feature film.

The artwork substitutes the iconic image of the menacing vampire for the likeness of frontman, Papa Emeritus. The eerie Marsten House of the mini-series was also substituted by a church reminiscent of Sweden's Uppsala Cathedral.

Infestissumam

The artwork for their sophomore full-length recording was unashamedly based on the iconic promotional poster for the 1984, Oscar-winning film, Amadeus. However, the image is not a vile rip-off. It incorporates dramatically contrasting bright colors, Vatican City's St. Peter's Square, Papa Emeritus II and the figure of a baby that morbidly suggests the presence of evil.

Ghost B.C. commissioned Polish artist, Zbigniew Bielak for the creation of this artwork and inner illustrations. He confirms that indeed, "the band came up with the idea of using Amadeus poster as main reference for the cover." Outstanding re-imagining, indeed.

If You Have Ghost (EP)

Ghost used the talents of renewed illustrator M. Frisk for the creation of this particular art. He admits that the image is directly based on an iconic still taken from the highly influential 1922 silent horror film "Nosferatu." On Frisk's rendition, Papa Emeritus II substitutes the iconic vampire while he is standing on a ship.

"Ghost had a clear concept and a plan for everything so this was also their idea," Frisk recalls. "The images from Nosferatu are iconic and therefore great to use as a reference. The commission was quite clear from the beginning; my job was to make their idea work."

The EP's back sleeve also features another image featuring the silhouette mythical vampire. Frisk admits that "that was my idea to put the shadow in there to make the back of the EP a bit more interesting."

Petition Launched Asking Ghost To Disband

In another of our preferred genre's ridiculous "That's Not Metal!" accusations that just makes us all look like a bunch of whiny, bickering schoolgirls, a petition has been launched to get the band Ghost to break up.

The petition currently has 625 signatures (with the hopes of reaching 10,000) and can be found at this location. The organizer of the petition comments:

"We petition against Ghost of the heavy metal genre that continues to make albums and tour. Many people getting into metal think that they are the real deal and that we should forget the real bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc. They wish to destroy real metal with their carnival music nonsense. Seriously, is a song like If You Have Ghost actually something that a real metalhead would listen to? They are not metal. People also make the erroneous claim that they are so directly inspired by King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, which is just wrong. They are, in fact, a watered-down version of BOC. We the people oppose Ghost continuing as a band, and they should be split up as soon as possible.

"Obviously just 100 won't convince Ghost and their management to listen! If we get 10,000 signatures then MAYBE they will listen and stop making music. Ghost has already spent the last several years butchering our ears with their awful poser music. Real metal does not involve Hot Topic bands. Ghost is not metal. Thank you for reading." More...

Sonisphere Festival 2014

Sonisphere Festival returned to Finland last week, to start off the festival season in Helsinki with a bang! Despite the fact that it is Spring and we’ve had hot weather rivaling the Mediterranean this year; we were instead treated to a cold downpour, which only the bravest of metal fans dared endure. Despite the less then summery weather, the turnout was dense, though admittedly covered in less then festive rainwear.

The dark sky was a glaring contrast to the laid back vibe of the festival hosted by Live Nation. Still the atmosphere remained upbeat; as Metallica and Slayer were to be headlining; and the instinct to nest indoors was trampled by the drive to see two such legends live! More...

Co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) launches this week's episode by announcing another ticket giveaway through Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, FL, this time for the upcoming DevilDriver show on June 18th. Ghost Posts New "Papaganda" Clip

Ghost B.C. has posted the second in a series of "Papaganda" videos, this one titled "What Happens in Vegas..." Check out the latest clip below (thanks to Noisey.Vice.com), in which Papa Emeritus takes on two wild groupies. The following press release was also issued about the band:

"Much has been written about enigmatic Swedish theatrical metal band Ghost B.C. — 'subversive,' 'refreshing,' 'blasphemous' — but even in all those countless reviews, interviews, and thinkpieces do we miss the words that properly encapsulate what it is about this clan of nameless ghouls that makes them so endlessly captivating, hooking listeners from the most disparate corners of music fandom.

"With a live show that more closely resembles a pre-apocalyptic occult ceremony than anything you might refer to as a 'concert,' the collective, helmed by current harbinger Papa Emeritus II, delivers spiritual awakening and religious deviance to their devoted followers. In the first episode of Papaganda, our mini-series on the cult of Ghost B.C., we explore the papal lineage, the reign of Emeritus II, and the future of the Ghost dynasty." More...
