Weiland Sentenced To Three Years Probation For DUI

MTV News reports that Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland was sentenced Thursday in a Los Angeles court to three years' probation, during which he'll be treated for his drug problem. Weiland had pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge earlier this week, which stemmed from his arrest on his 36th birthday, October 27th. Under the terms of Weiland's latest probation, he'll be required to enroll in a six-month drug-treatment program and attend three Narcotics Anonymous meetings per week for the next three years. Weiland will also be required to submit to regular drug testing, as well as periodic drug testing at the discretion of the police (with or without probable cause), according to the city attorney's office.

Velvet Revolver Album Copy Protection Broken

Engadget, a web magazine with "obsessive daily coverage of everything new in gadgets and consumer electronics," has published an article offering instructions on how to bypass the "copy protection" feature included on the VELVET REVOLVER CD, "Contraband".

Phillip Torrone of Engadget writes: "The disc has 'Copy Protection' from SunnComn called MediaMax, which on some Windows systems will force the user to install software on their system in order to listen to the music and restrict what they do with the music, for example you cannot make MP3s. If SunnComn sounds familiar, they should, these are the folks who were going to sue a Princeton student for 10 million dollars for writing a paper that showed by pressing the shift key while inserting the CD (and of course, pressing the shift key still works on this CD too according to all reports).

"Sadly, the way RCA and SunnComn want you to listen to music is pretty complicated, you'd need to insert the CD on your PC, wait up to one minute, click an end user agreement, then only 'listen' to the music, oh- wait there is more- it installs software which blocks making MP3s and it requires a web connection to exchange 'data' and keys. On the disc there are music files, WMA, but they don't seem to play on any device we have which plays WMAs, the site says only 'approved' devices, yikes!

"Well, for us, it wasn't an issue, why? Well, we have always disabled 'Auto-Run' on our Windows based system, since like Windows 95, we've always disabled that 'feature'. By default Windows will automatically look for a file called Autorun.inf on any CD you pop in to your system, we've always known this is a big security issue as there are a lot of spyware and viruses distributed on CDs, you read about this every week. In fact, Microsoft is even disabling this in their next security focused service pack."

Velvet Revolver Explain Slash's Missing Hat

VH1.com has an article that talks about Slash's missing signature tophat and some more about Velvet Revolver's debut album, Contraband, and frontman Scott Weiland's decision not to talk to the press. Here's a taste:

Like Metallica cutting their hair and Enrique Iglesias removing his mole, Slash losing his signature top hat in the Velvet Revolver publicity shots has hardly gone unnoticed.

The legendary guitarist and his bandmates would like to make it clear, however, that journalists who have noted a total absence are not entirely accurate.

"It makes occasional appearances," drummer Matt Sorum said backstage at the KROQ Weenie Roast.

"Sometimes it's just on the stage in the corner by itself, sometimes it's on me," guitarist Dave Kushner added.

"I just need it," Slash declared with a smile, hiding behind his long locks of hair, which have not changed. "I need it close by for security, in case I get overly shy, so I can pull it over my head."

The hat is traveling with Velvet Revolver on tour, but it's made few appearances, perhaps a sign of how comfortable the guitarist is onstage with his new band. And now that the group's debut album, Contraband, is in stores, Slash only expects to have more fun playing live.

Velvet Revolver Loaded For May Release

VELVET REVOLVER's--lead vocalist SCOTT WEILAND, guitarist SLASH, bassist DUFF McKAGAN, drummer MATT SORUM and guitarist DAVE KUSHNER--will release their debut album Contraband May 18 on RCA Records. Packed with songs like “Sucker Train Blues,” “Fall To Pieces,” “Super Human,” “You Got No Right” “Set Me Free,” “Headspace” and the first single “Slither,” the album was co-produced by the band and Josh Abraham. “Slither” is set to impact radio March 23.

“We’re all looking for a rebirth here,” explains Scott. “We’re looking to get back that same feeling we had when we all first started making music--the sense of doing it for the pure joy of making music. Along the way the whole idea that got us into this had been raped and sodomized. We were all in mourning of that and wondering if we could somehow get it back. As it turns out, the only way we could get it all back was to start it all new. Now we have that opportunity and it’s fucking amazing. This music is just vicious, very aggressive and it forces you to lace your boots up and sort of get ready for the fight.”

Scott Weiland Ordered Back To Detox

The Associated Press reports Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland was ordered to return to a live-in drug detoxification center after leaving early, officials said. Weiland, 36 was ordered to report to the facility last October after pleading no contest to possession of heroin. A Superior Court judge learned Friday (January 23) that he had walked out or was discharged after only a month and ordered him to return, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

He is eligible for release in July but must participate in a six-month follow-up program. If he leaves the center again or tests positive for drugs, prosecutors will seek a warrant for his arrest, Robison said.

Judas Priest And Slipknot Rumored For Ozzfest 2004

According to a reliable industry source, JUDAS PRIEST are "90 percent a go" for this year's Ozzfest, which is tentatively expected to kick off late June/early July. OZZY OSBOURNE, who is recovering from a nasty all-terrain-vehicle crash, will reportedly try to headline the festival once again, although any complications with his recovery may indefinitely postpone his return to the live stage. SLIPKNOT are believed to be in talks to co-headline the festival's second stage with HATEBREED, while DAMAGEPLAN and VELVET REVOLVER are also said to be strong possibilities. Says our source: "The thinking is that not enough people have been coming early so [the festival organizers] may lay off the newer acts and get more established acts for the second stage."

VELVET REVOLVER singer Scott Weiland has been placed on strict lockdown at the Pasadena, CA. rehab facility where he is currently completing a six-month residential program after he was caught attempting to smuggle drugs into the center, informed sources have told BLABBERMOUTH.NET.

Weiland, who was allowed out for several days last month, under police supervision, to complete his vocals for VELVET REVOLVER's debut album, is believed to have one more song left to record for the as-yet-untitled CD, tentatively due in late March/early April through RCA Records.

The album, which was produced by Josh Abraham (LIMP BIZKIT, STAIND), is currently being mixed at a California studio by Andy Wallace, who has previously worked with NIRVANA, WHITE ZOMBIE, LINKIN PARK, SLAYER and SEPULTURA, among many others.

As previously reported, the former STONE TEMPLE PILOTS vocalist was scheduled to appear in court on December 3 on a DUI charge, but the hearing was moved to December 23. Weiland will enter a plea at that time to charges of driving under the influence of drugs. He was arrested on his birthday, October 27, after crashing his BMW into several parked cars on a Los Angeles street, then attempting to flee the scene.
