Graspop Metal Meeting: Day One

There is absolutely no question about it, if you want to go to a metal festival, go to a European one. Wacken Open Air and Download might well be the most famous, with the Sonisphere events gaining plenty of exposure too, but for my money, it just doesn't get any better than Graspop Metal Meeting, which takes place in a small town in Belgium called Dessel. This would be my third time attending the event, and more likely than not, it won't be the last.

The festival kicked off on Friday the 24th with a rather unusual choice of band, namely FM. The band features two former members of New Wave Of British Heavy Metal band, Samson but their style is much more album orientated rock than metal. Nevertheless, they proved to be a good way to start the festivities, opening with the song, "Wildside." As it was only half past eleven in the morning and the majority of the crowd had been up all night drinking and shouting, "TIMMY!" it took the audience a little while to get into the mood. In any case, they were still very appreciative of FM and perhaps the biggest response came when the band performed a cover of "Heard It Through The Grapevine," a song made famous by soul legend Marvin Gaye. Maybe it would have been better to start with something a little heavier, but either way, FM put in a solid performance and were warmly received.

After deciding to skip the first bands on the Marquees, we hung around the main stage to wait for the next band, Dio Disciples. I've always liked "Ripper" Owens and felt that he doesn't get the credit he deserves so the prospect of him singing Dio songs this afternoon seemed quite interesting. "Interesting" didn't quite cover Dio Disciples though, as when they took the stage, they instantly proved themselves to be an outstanding way to remember Ronnie James Dio. Owens was in top form for the performance, which opened with "Stand Up And Shout" before leading into the classic, "Holy Diver." Owens isn't the only vocalist in the band either, as he is joined by Little Angels singer Toby Jepson, who was just as impressive as Owens and whose voice was absolutely magnifficent. The group frequently got the crowd to cheer as loud as they could whenever Dio's name was mentioned and most importantly, they seemed to be genuine about what they were doing. Make no mistake, Dio Disciples are not a cash in, they are one of the most heartfelt tributes to anything you will ever see. If Dio could see his music living on like this, with two amazing vocalists leading the charge, he would be proud. More...

Fair To Midland Announces New Live Shows

Fair to Midland has been confirmed to support The Damned Things and Maylene & The Sons of Disaser on the Inked Magazine tour this summer. "We're very excited about being a part of this tour," says bassist Jon Dicken. "We're fans of all the bands involved and are looking forward to hitting the road with them for what looks like should be a fun summer. It's a great way to kick off the release of our new record. Also, since it's called the Inked Magazine Tour we may need to make a few tattoo shop stops before the tour starts!"

The band has also been confirmed to support Dredg in July along side The Trophy Fire. Those dates are in addition to the cluster of CD Release shows the act announced earlier this week.

Fair to Midland will release a new full-length entitled "Arrows and Anchors" on July 12th, 2011. This is the band’s follow-up to the "Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True" record released in 2007. One of the new tracks, titled "Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow" is still being given away as a free download.

The upcoming tour dates are as follows: More...

Cradle Of Filth Singer Forms New Band

A new band has been formed which features members from some of the biggest names in metal. The new group, named Temple Of The Black Moon, is fronted by Cradle Of Filth singer Dani Filth and also includes in it's ranks Anthrax/The Damned Things guitarist Rob Caggiano, bass player King Ov Hell (Ov Hell/Sahg/former Gorogoroth) and drummer John Tempesta, who has worked with a variety of bands including White/Rob Zombie, Exodus, Testament and The Cult, of whom is he is still a member. The band describe their sound as "a cauldron bubbling over with the unsavory flavors of Tool and Celtic Frost, and seasoned with the likes of Immortal and At The Gates."

Speaking about the name, Dani Filth commented: "We had an innumerable amount of names that never seemed likely to stick, that was until we put our proverbial heads together and narrowed it down to just three or four, and then tossed for it (proverbially of course) using a silver Norwegian crown (we couldn't find any proper money). The name Temple Of The Black Moon represents the rigorous worship of desire, (the black moon astrologically has always held association with the dark Goddess Lilith) and of course the ramifications of the lunar eclipse, always a herald for death and ill-omen."

The band has recorded almost an album's worth of material and is planning to record the songs in Bergen, Norway for a full-length album, which is expected to be released in the summer of next year.

Song titles thus far include "Infernal Desire Machine," "Don't Call Up What You Can't Put Down," "Dark Eyes For Trouble," "Beautifully Perverse," and "C.N.T (All That's Missing Is You)."
