It’s Monday again, which means it’s time to explore three more lesser known bands in the metal underground. Today’s exploration to the underground world features our neighbors to the north, which is home to its fair share of metal legends, from the most extreme to the most melodic. We’ve actually looked at Canadian acts several times before, specifically focusing on Toronto and the Maritimes previously, and today we’ll trek there again for three bands that cross the genre spectrum.
I suppose I should start out with a bit of disclosure: I’m not from Canada, and I’ve only been there once for a fishing trip years ago, although the border is only a few hours north of me. So unfortunately these are bands I know solely via their music and their online presence, and I haven’t had the pleasure of interacting with them in the live scene personally.
While working on the review for the new Chariots of the Gods album “Tides of War,” I got to thinking about the very solid lineup of bands from the frigid north, especially in the underground metal scene. There’s a fairly large grouping of what are essentially “second tier” bands currently active – these guys bring the metal full force, but they haven’t gotten signed with Nuclear Blast or Metal Blade or any of the larger labels focusing on heavy music. They still manage to get hooked up with PR companies to keep their presence known however, release high quality albums, and a good deal of them stay busy with touring and festival appearances.
Chariots of the Gods
Is this Ottawa act composed of thrash maniacs who are really into melodic death metal, or are they in an MDM band that can’t give up their love for Megadeth? Either way, this is pretty crushing, headbanging-mandatory stuff.
Chariots of the Gods will be officially dropping debut full-length album “Tides of War” later this month (January 29th to be precise), and the band has already released teasers that should more than pique the interest of metalheads. We recently had the opportunity to premiere the track “Unbound,” which features a guest appearance by Aleksi Sihvonen of Norther, and you can also hear the album’s title track below. For some more background on the band and info on the album’s themes, check out our recent interview here.

Scythia, Canada’s purveyors of folk/prog metal, are proud to reveal to fans a sneak peak of their latest sonic attack, “For The Bear," due out on Septmeber 25tth, 2012.
Vocalist / guitarist Dave Khan comments, "Scythia is proud to present the artwork and more for our upcoming release. The artwork was painted by the talented Mika Harju of Finland, he has experience designing metal albums before and we needed something tough and harsh looking to capture the intensity of the music. As you can imagine, it probably doesn't get much tougher than duelling barbarians from atop a bear in the dead of winter. We are also including a teaser track that gives a little prelude of the sonic intensity that accompanies this imagery."
Canadian folk metal warriors Scythia are proud to present their new music video for "Spirit of the Quest," taken from their sophomore album, "...Of Exile," which was released in 2011. Vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan comments:
"Scythia is pleased to finally reveal Spirit of the Quest. This video has been a long time in the making as we've made several attempts to capture our excitement and enthusiasm as well as the story on the album with an indie budget. Filming and editing it was an extremely fun and humorous process, we worked with James Weekes and Rosie Anson of Hammer Records to capture the footage. They were both great at capturing wicked content and amping us up to get into character." More...
Canada’s wizards of folk-progressive metal fusion, Scythia, have set aside their time hunting trolls and have come to the rescue of the Richmond Animal Protection Society for a benefit concert to help raise funds for the RAPS two animal shelters in dire need of supplies.
Scythia's vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan commented, "Scythia is stoked to rock out for an honourable cause like animals. A huge inspiration for our breed of folk metal is having a symbiosis with animals and nature... Especially bears, but dogs and cats are awesome as well. We are also stoked about the killer line up, we have played with all of these bands before and believe that each and every band on this bill are top notch musicians capable of delivering incredible performances."
With support from local Vancouver speed thrash metal titans Cradle To Grave, power metallers Aeterna and Nanaimo, BC's Viking warriors Eye of Odin, Scythia along with event organizer and Oboe of death player Morgan Zentner of Aesir Promotions are conquering higher ground for this great cause to help our furry companions in their time of need.
"As the promoter and creator of this event, I am proud to say that Aesir Promotions will be putting on a show to help support such a worthy cause. As an animal owner and lover, I feel that abandoned pets are easily over looked and I was very happy to find the Richmond Animal Protection Society, which is a no kill shelter." says Morgan Zentner, "We have support from bands all over BC and Alberta donating merch for raffle prizes and the support from the metal community in Vancouver has been fantastic. All of the performers for the show are of high caliber and we are all looking forward to helping out our furry friends."
Also for your viewing pleasure, one of Vancouver's best belly dancers, the radiant Mahafsoun will be joining Scythia on stage for a memorable performance. Details are as follows: More...
