Chicago doom-metallers Earthen Grave have made their newest single "Death is Another Word...." available for streaming and purchase via the Ripple Music bandcamp page. The newly recorded single from the upcoming remastered release of Earthen Grave's self-titled debut finds the band unleashing a terror of groove-laden classic metal and doom. Twin guitar harmonies sear through the riff-fest of pure darkness and post-Sabbath heaviness. "Death is Another Word...." is one of several bonus tracks exclusive to the Ripple Music re-release of the fully remastered Earthen Grave debut, appearing on both the CD and double-LP versions of the album.
A limited amount of CDs and LPs will be available directly through the band when they play the Days of the Doomed fest in Cudahy, WI on June 22nd. Keep an eye open for the world-wide release of the CD and double-LP on July 9th, available through Nail Distribution, Code 7, Clearspot, and the Ripple Music Store.

Nominated as one the best newcomers of 2012 in our annual year-end awards, Chicago's Earthen Grave is thrilled to announce its signing to Ripple Music for the worldwide release of the band's debut self-titled album (reviewed here).
The album will be available on CD and double vinyl on July 9th via Ripple Music. The label also comments:
"Formed in 2008, Earthen Grave is a five-piece Chicago metal band that marries the sounds of metal past and future with a sweaty, pummeling live show. Earthen Grave boasts an undeniable collective metal and musical pedigree. Each member is an accomplished musician and a veteran of the metal scene, including Ron Holzner who was a member of the seminal and seismic doom pioneers Trouble - a band widely regarded as one of the most important unsung American metal bands of all time. Earthen Grave, which was nominated as one of the best newcomers of 2012 by the Metalunderground staff, has checked in with the following announcement about recording a song for an upcoming re-release:
"Earthen Grave is heading back to Farview Recording this weekend to cut a new tune for the upcoming re-release of 'Earthen Grave.' The song – 'Death is Another Word...' – was first performed at Earthen Grave's tour stops in Brooklyn NYC and Stoner Hands of Doom this summer."

I haven't been following as many new, up-and-coming bands this year as usual, but I couldn't help but notice that Chicago thrash/doom band Earthen Grave released a first full-length album in 2012. The self-titled effort followed (and also contains the songs from) the "Dismal Times" EP from 2009, which has been in heavy rotation in my doom playlists for a long time. The band most notably features Ron Holzner on bass (formerly of Trouble), and Rachel Barton Pine on electric violin. The violin is used to excellent effect to add atmosphere on the doomy songs and even some solos during the faster parts. The band has also done an excellent cover of Witchfinder General's "Burning a Sinner." Check out the epic "Death On The High Seas" below:
Chicago’s Earthen Grave welcomes Chris Wozniak (Lair of the Minotaur), as the band’s new drummer, who is replacing previous member Scott Davidson.
Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Chris "Woz" Wozniak has performed on drums in a variety of rock, folk, and metal bands for over 20 years. He has played with local acts Trifog and Blood of Martyrs, and is currently the drummer for national acts I Klatus and Lair of the Minotaur. In reference to LOTM’s 2008 release "War Metal Battle Master," Decibel Magazine described Woz as being "skilled at treating his drum kit like trash cans that must be killed." It’s this very intensity which made him the perfect fit for Chicago’s epic doom collective.
Bassist Ron Holzner will be guest DJing on Diane Farris' Peer Pressure segment of her radio program on WFMU today (Thursday, November 29th). Listeners will be able to ask Holzner questions via the live interactive playlist. Holzner's appearance is scheduled for 1:00pm - 2:30pm EST. WFMU can be heard on 91.1FM in NYC and East/Central NJ, 90.1FM in the Hudson Valley, Lower Catskills and Western NJ, and worldwide streaming on wfmu.org. An archive of this program will be permanently available by later Thursday evening.
Earthen Grave will also perform at the Double Door in Chicago this Friday, November 30th, and in June comes Days of The Doomed 3 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with additional live actions to be confirmed in 2013. Stay tuned.

Chicago’s doom metal act Earthen Grave announces that the band has parted ways with longtime drummer Scott Davidson. Davidson played on the group’s 2009 "Dismal Times" debut EP and recently-released full-length album "Earthen Grave." The band issued a collective statement this week:
“We wish Scott all the best with his many other projects including his long time running Chicago’s Rebel Radio, his Sabbath/Dio tribute band Heaven & Hell Chicago and all his future endeavors.”
Earthen Grave is currently auditioning drummers for Davidson’s replacement. In the meantime, Earthen Grave will perform a special semi-acoustic show at The Iron Ward in Cleveland this Saturday, October 20th featuring Rachel Barton Pine, Ron Holzner, Mark Weiner, Tony Spillman, Jason Muxlow, and Hannah Barton. The band has also confirmed a headlining gig at the Double Door in Chicago on November 30th.

Amidst a cluster of regional Summer tours, including recent performances throughout the Midwest and Southern U.S. and a show in Canada, Chicago’s orchestral epic doom outfit Earthen Grave will head east this week.
The band will play an early show at Acheron in Brooklyn, New York this Friday, preceded by a concert by bassist Ron Holzner’s other band The Skull with Eric Wagner at Saint Vitus Bar. The next day Earthen Grave will travel to Connecticut for a performance at Stoner Hands of Doom XII on Saturday alongside RoadSaw, Ichabod, Raw Radar War, Pilgrim, Earthride, Revelation, Pale Divine, Iron Man, Elder, War Injun and tons more at the four-day all-ages event. Earthen Grave will be unveiling a brand new track at the East Coast shows this weekend as well.
Earthen Grave will also be supporting Kill Devil Hill (featuring Rex Brown and Vinny Appice) Thursday Sept 13th at Chicago’s Double Door, and the performance is to be streamed live on Gigity.TV. Specifics will be posted on the band’s website shortly. Earthen Grave recently performed at the two-day Days Of The Doomed II Festival in Cudahy, Wisconsin alongside Solace, Blood Farmers, Earthride, Revelation, Argus and more.
The outfit then crossed into Canada and played a first international show, as part of the Music & Beyond Festival in Ontario where the band performed within a deconsecrated wood cathedral. Several weeks later as the group was set to play in New Orleans, the show was canceled en-route. Making last-minute arrangements, EG ended up joining the bill at a raging, beer-soaked CD release party for Hipsterectomy in Austin, and also landed a spot on Ripple Festival in Dallas where the infamous Sherman from Earthride joined for two songs, and guitarist Jason Muxlow met one his biggest metal influences when he busted a guitar string mid-set and John Perez stepped out of the crowd to fix it. Earthen Grave drove south from Chicago to play shows in New Orleans and Dallas. Unfortunately, the NOLA show was canceled on Thursday, which led to an impromptu performance in Austin made possible by Hipsterectomy. The local crossover crushers invited Earthen Grave to play their CD release show at Trophy’s.
Due to the punk-heavy lineup, in many ways Earthen Grave’s performance was akin to The Obsessed opening for hardcore bands in Washington D.C., circa the early ‘80s. This was Hipsterectomy’s show, but the band offered Earthen Grave the headlining spot. Even though Earthen Grave features former Trouble member Ron Holzner, the crowd mostly consisted of locals who had come out to see their friends play. Once Earthen Grave took the stage, most of the crowd filtered out. More...

Chicago doom metal band Earthen Grave entered the studio on December 1st and has been giving short updates on their Facebook page. Here's the status so far:
Earthen Grave is back in the studio starting TONIGHT!!! Looking forward to making some noise the next few days.
Day #2 at Farview! Jay was up early working on Tony's guitar tracks from yesterday, Ron and I just arrived (with food!) and Mark's on his way. Today we'll finish tracking Scott (drums) and Tony (guitar) and get started on Ron (bass), Mark (vocals) and Jason (guitar).
Day #3 at Farview! Jason cut guitars for three songs this morning, Tony did a couple leads and Mark is tracking vocals as we speak. Good spirits and it's fun hearing things coming together.
Day #4 at Farview! Today is a light day. Tony's recording some acoustic bits and Ron's doing bass while the rest of us stay home.
Chicago doom metal band Earthen Grave, featuring violinist Rachel Barton Pine, has posted a short update indicating that they are about to enter the studio to record a new album. Here's what they had to say about it:
"New song 'Tilted World' is coming into sharp and rather exciting focus and Tony and Jason wrote what may end up being an intro and outro for the album. Recording starts next weekend!!!"
RETRO GRAVE, featuring original and former TROUBLE drummer Jeff "Oly" Olson, has been confirmed for the Days Of The Doomed Fest, set to take place June 17-18, 2011 at The P.L.A.V. in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Commented Olson: "I'm very excited to play for our friends in the mid west for the Days Of The Doom Fest. It's going to be great to perform on stage again. I've missed that! In addition, because I live in southern Maine, I have not yet had the chance to see my longtime TROUBLE friends, Eric Wagner and Ron Holzner perform with their new bands, BLACKFINGER and EARTHEN GRAVE. I'm looking forward to see them again as well as the latest up and coming bands in the doom scene. Stay tuned for RETRO GRAVE's debut show to be held in New York City soon with my friends from GNAW."
The Days Of The Doomed Fest billing is shaping up as follows:

RETRO GRAVE (feat. Jeff "Oly" Olson of TROUBLE fame)
