Diamond's Mine: The Best Of 2025

Well... 2025 was crap wasn't it? More war, more hatred and AI is both rampant and mostly promoted by the biggest losers you know. Once again though, we find some solace in metal music, there as always to offer an outlet for our anger, frustration and general negativity. There's been no shortage of memorable moments, including the passing of metal's first frontman Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Mustaine announcing that Megadeth will be hanging up the gloves so he can talk about Metallica full time, the unexpected return of Acid Bath and the sad disbandment of many legends including Orange Goblin, Whitesnake and Bury Your Dead, along with some younger casualties in Ithaca and Svalbard. We also said our sad farewells to John Sykes of Thin Lizzy and Tygers Of Pan Tang, Mastodon vocalist and guitarist Brent Hinds, At The Gates frontman Tomas Lindberg original Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley, to name only a few.

Ordinarily, I begin my annual column by picking a favourite newcomer, but despite seeing plenty of bands this year, I don't think I caught anyone making their debut, nor did I hear a debut album which particularly grabbed me. Hell, even Googling "metal debut albums 2025" was practically useless. The closest I've come was seeing three bands who released their first album in 2024; High Parasite, Brat and Bobbie Dazzle. I would highly recommend all three to fans of different genres, especially the first on that list, but I can't really give them the award when they didn't form or release their first albums this year. So instead of arbitrarily picking a young band and pretending I know anything about them, I invite all readers to tell me which new acts they'd recommend in the comments below. More...

70000 Tons of Metal 2026 will host the first-ever live on-stage performance of VBO. Also known as Vice Business Only, VBO, a turbo-charged fusion of synthwave swagger and heavy rock heat, is a newly formed project from Francesco Cavalieri, best known as the lead vocalist of Italian Power Metal band WIND ROSE.

70000 Tons of Metal 2026 also features the first two shows of IZEGRIM as they reunite after a 6-year hiatus. The band’s two shows on board will not only mark their reunion but will also celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Paradise Lost Ascends To Another Level In London

Great lineups can be like buses. You'll wait ages for one, then two come along at once. Only last week, Testament rampaged through the UK with Obituary, Destruction and Nervosa, and now fans of Gothic doom have their own dream tour as Paradise Lost embarked on the UK leg of their first European tour to promote their new album, "Ascension." It's an exciting time to see Paradise Lost, as "Ascension" has been hailed as an instant classic, with some going so far as to call the seventeenth outing their best yet, which is no easy feat considering their legendary status. It's not just Paradise Lost with a buzz about them on this tour, as joining them on the trek are Messa, the Italian doom band whose latest album, "The Spin" is also a contender for album of the year, and High Parasite, the "death pop" band fronted by Aaron Stainthorpe, whose departure from My Dying Bride after thirty five years was confirmed on the first date of the tour.

Speaking of which, it was High Parasite who got the evening underway, and very quickly too, hitting the stage mere minutes after the front doors opened. They released their debut album, "Forever We Burn" last year and it's another record full of superb tunes, gripping atmospheres and impressive song writing, so I for one was very eager to hear how the music would sound in a live setting. As it turns out, it sounds even better. High Parasite performs with enormous energy, getting the crowd moving and clapping along to a number of songs from the get go with the opening number, "Parasite." Stainthorpe himself is in tremendous form, his voice sailing across the room with majesty and force, like a ship charging through stormy waters.

Of course, there's more to the band than their most famous members and every one of them put in a great shift to make this set as fun and memorable as it could be. The singles "Wasn't Human" and "Let It Fail" sounded fantastic tonight and while not everyone was familiar with their work, those who were sang along to every word they knew, particularly on these two songs. "Hate Springs Eternal" was another highlight of the set, before they concluded their short time with the title track from "Forever We Burn." This was an exhilarating performance and, even though they'll be getting Lacrimas Profundere, I feel bad that mainland Europe won't be seeing High Parasite on this tour, as they fit in perfectly and are guaranteed to make new fans with every show. Brutal Assault Is Less Than 100 Days Away!

With less than 100 days left until Brutal Assault 2025, the line-up was finally completed. If you don’t know what a Brutal Assault is, it’s the one of the premier metal festivals in all of Europe that takes place during the summer. It takes place in the town Jaromer within an 18th century fortress on the eastern edge of the Czech Republic. It’s only a two-hour bus ride from the capital city of Prague. Wroclaw, Poland is two and a half hours to the northeast. In other words, all roads lead to Brutal Assault no matter which airport you prefer to fly into.

The festival beckons about 20 thousand attendees every year, but because the grounds are so massive, it seems less than that. The festival has been in existence since 1996, so the festival organizers know how to smoothly run a music festival this size by now. There are two main stages that ping-pong the headliner types all day and night long and there are 3 other smaller stages as well.

Now that I’ve gotten the basics of Brutal Assault out of the way, I’ll get to this years’ bands. There are over 140 of them…

3 INCHES OF BLOOD, ABSU, AGNOSTIC FRONT, ALUK TODOLO, ANGELMAKER, ARTHUR BROWN, ASPHYX, ATTILA, AUGUST BURNS RED, AVULSED, BENIGHTED, BESNA, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, BLOOD FIRE DEATH: A TRIBUTE TO QUORTHON AND THE MUSIC OF BATHORY, BLOOD RED THRONE, BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE, BRUJERIA, BRUTALLY DECEASED, CAR BOMB, CARNIVORE A.D., COUNTERPARTS, CRYPT SERMON, CRYPTA, CRYSTAL LAKE, CULT OF LUNA, CUTTERRED FLESH, DARK ANGEL, DARK FUNERAL, DEFEATED SANITY, DIMMU BORGIR, DOPE, DROWNING POOL, DYING FETUS, ENVY, EXHORDER, FAÜST, FEAR FACTORY, FIT FOR A KING, FIVE THE HIEROPHANT, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, FRAYLE, FULCI, FUNERAL, FURIA, GADGET, GAEREA, GOJIRA, GOST, GRAPHIC NATURE, GRAVE, GREEN LUNG, GUTALAX, GUTSLIT, HÄLLAS, HANABIE, HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY, HELLBUTCHER, HELLRIPPER, HERIOT, HIDEOUS DIVINITY, HIGH PARASITE, ILL NIÑO, INTER ARMA, KARNIVOOL, KATAKLYSM, KERRY KING, KING WOMAN, KLIDAS, KUBLAI KHAN TX, LANDMVRKS, LEPROUS, MACABRE, MALEVOLENT CREATION, MALIGNANCY, MAMMOTH GRINDER, MANTAR, MARKED AS AN ENEMY, MASTODON, MAYHEM, MINISTRY, MNEMIC, MONOLORD, NE OBLIVISCARIS, NILE, OBITUARY, OBSCURE SPHINX, OPETH, ORANGE GOBLIN, ORANSSI PAZUZU, OVERKILL, PAN LYNX, PARADISE LOST, PATRIARCHY, PELICAN, PIG DESTROYER, PRIEST, PRONG, PROTECTOR, PSYCROPTIC, PYREXIA, PYRRHON, REPLICANT, REZN, RIVERS OF NIHIL, ROTTING CHRIST, RUÏM, RYKER’S, SEE YOU IN HELL, SIGH, SKÁLMÖLD, SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM, SLOW CRUSH, STATIC–X, SUFFOCATION, SYLVAINE, THE BROWNING, THE HALO EFFECT, THE KOVENANT, THROWN, TO THE GRAVE, TSJUDER, UNLEASHED, WARBRINGER, WAYFARER, WITHIN DESTRUCTION, XIII. Brutal Assault Adds A Corucopia Of Doom

Let yourself be consumed by darkness as the masters of crushing melancholy and epic storytelling take the stage at Brutal Assault: genre legends Paradise Lost, monumental Cult of Luna, Icelandic skalds Skálmöld, the somber heroin jazz of BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE/ official the epic conjurers of darkness Crypt Sermon, stoner titans Monolord, Aaron of My Dying Bride with his new doom project High Parasite, and the retro-futuristic progressive hard rock of Hällas.

Brutal Assault will take place in the Czech Republic at the Josefov Fortress during August 6-9, 2025.

What's So Great About Mystic Festival? Read This.

1. Certain bands that hardly come stateside but are easier to see if you’re in Europe. The bands I’m specifically referring to for this article are Gutalax, Asphyx, Furia, Satyricon and Blasphemy. Gutalax are actually going to be playing a couple of dates in the U.S. come September, but I didn’t want to wait that long to see them live for the first time. Asphyx, well…it was 2017 when they were stateside and Furia, I bet never. Satyricon has played some scattered dates here and there but are definitely more active in Europe. Mystic Festival has all of them this summer!

2. The cooler temperatures! This is my third Mystic Festival in a row and because it kicks off the metal festival season in early June, you can still comfortably wear a jacket at night. In fact, in 2022, the temperatures at the end of the first night of the festival were in the 40’s Fahrenheit. The Polish attendees are used to these types of temperatures but for someone that splits their time between Phoenix, Arizona and Athens, Greece, that’s called winter! The days, however, are beautiful. No complaints there.

3. The festival foods. It’s Poland, but this festival offers more than just pierogi and kielbasa. In fact, they are both more difficult to find at Mystic Festival than everything else available. There’s really good pizzas, hamburgers, some Mexican, Portuguese (!!!), lángos (think frybread with sour cream) and plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. The prices are fair for festival food but the lines can be long at times. There’s an actual indoor food court with plenty of seating if you need to get away for a bit. More...

Paradise Lost And More Added To Mystic Festival

Paradise Lost with a special program to be selected by fans, as well as Dark Funeral, Blood Command and Mimi Barks join the Mystic Festival 2024 program. Unfortunately, despite earlier announcement, Scowl will not perform in Gdansk this year.

Paradise Lost
From the cold, dank dungeons of "Lost Paradise" to the bleak brightness of "Obsidian", Paradise Lost follow their own path through the dark, meandering between doom and death metal and gothic rock. The Brits have been writing their history for more than three decades, and it can be read in many different ways - there are so many cult albums in their discography, so many immortal anthems. But this time it's not the band that will decide what will be played, the setlist for the Gdansk concert will be compiled by the fans! How? When? We'll keep you posted... In the meantime, listen carefully to Paradise Lost's albums and take notes, because decision time will come.

Dark Funeral
One of the mightiest forces in the Swedish black metal scene, also worshipped in Poland since their furious debut "The Secrets of the Black Arts". Years pass, but Lord Ahriman and his horde remain faithful to the darkness, as they proved most recently, in 2022, by successfully spewing blasphemies on the album "We Are the Apocalypse".

Blood Command
The title of the Norwegians' last album to date, released in 2023, is "World Domination" - and it's all true. The panzer punk from Bergen, with charismatic Australian Nikki Brumen at the front, is already a global phenomenon. And they take no prisoners.

Mimi Barks
She may have titled her mixtape "DEADGIRL", but reviewers had no doubt - a new star was born into dark, twisted music. "Mimi Barks is becoming one of the most essential artists in modern alternative music" - this is "Kerrang!", with a score of 5/5. You can call it grime metal, you can call it doom trap, and you don’t have to name it at all just come closer and experience it.

Unfortunately, Scowl, who canceled their visit to Europe around this time, will not appear at Mystic Festival 2024, despite earlier announcements. Their place on the program is taken by Blood Command.

Mystic Festival will take place in Gdansk, Poland at the Gdansk Shipyard on June 5th through 8th, 2024.

Tickets are available now on the Mystic Festival homepage here More...
