One killer book, one killer show, eight of the best death metal and grindcore bands on earth. If you love the underground, there's no alternative: choose Choosing Death Fest.
In celebration of 2015's revised and expanded edition of "Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore" (penned by Decibel Magazine editor-in-chief Albert Mudrian), Decibel Magazine has lured eight of extreme music's most pugnacious practitioners to Philadelphia, PA's Union Transfer on Saturday, April 16th.
The show will consist of Dying Fetus, Nails, Misery Index, Deceased, Noisem, Horrendous, Magrudergrind and Taphos Nomos. What better way to celebrate the fifth annual Decibel Magazine Tour, which will conclude the day before at the same venue? Tickets for Choosing Death Fest ($22 advance or $25 day of show) go on sale Saturday, December 19 at this location. More...
Southern California's four-man hatecrew Nails will begin recording a third full-length album entitled "You Will Never Be One Of Us" on December 27th with Kurt Ballou. Due out in early 2016 via Nuclear Blast, head Nails Misnathrope Todd Jones comments on the release:
"In fear of sounding redundant of how 97% of these pre-album release descriptions always come off, I won't try to describe how our new album 'You Will Never Be One Of Us' sounds. What I will tell you is that the same care and the same attention went into this album as our previous albums 'Unsilent Death' and 'Abandon All Life,' and our new album sounds as inspired as either of those two full length recordings.
"Our new record has some new twists and turns that are built off the foundation we laid with our previous albums, as well as a lot of familiarity that you've come to expect from Nails. 'You Will Never Be One Of Us' is for us, for our fans, and for anybody else who feels disgusted and fed-up with social-climbing impostors, trying to leech off of anything they've ever dedicated themselves to. I can say with 110% certainty: We will not let you down."
This November, Philip H. Anselmo's Housecore Horror Fest will celebrate its third year of audio and visual bedlam. Set to commence in San Antonio, Texas at the Aztec Theater (201 E Commerce St.) on November 13th -15th, 2015, the horror-themed film and metal gala promises to be louder, gorier and more bludgeoning than ever before boasting two film-screening rooms, multiple vendors, special artist signings throughout the weekend and what's morphing into one of the most debilitating lineups of the year!
Already stacked with a crushing bill that includes Agoraphobic Nosebleed performing their second show ever, Corrosion Of Conformity featuring Pepper Keenan, Claudio Simonetti's Goblin doing a live score of George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, Superjoint, Eyehategod, Nails, Crowbar, Dropdead, Autopsy, Poison Idea, and so many others, the gatekeepers of Housecore Horror Fest today welcome the additions of thrash metal icons, Exodus, veteran death metal legion, Incantation, apocalyptic hardcore punk unit, Gasmiasma, atmospheric drone doom duo, Muscle And Marrow and theatrical heavy metal legend King Diamond whose performance will feature 1987 quintessential second full-length, Abigail, in its harrowing entirety! As an added bonus, Gwar's fabled Sleazy P. Martini will also be attending the annual gathering as a special guest!
And the awesome won't stop there. The fest has expanded the range of its grotesqueries, with a second stage located just steps away from the Aztec Theater. The Korova, at 107 E. Martin St. in San Antonio, will play host to even MORE bands throughout the weekend. Stay tuned for additional band announcements for The Korova in the coming weeks.
Comments Anselmo: "I am beyond excited to announce that the mighty King Diamond will be attacking the house on Friday the 13th at the Housecore Horror Festival. All hail the King."
Adds Maryland Deathfest co-founder Ryan Taylor, who's shaping this year's HHF lineup alongside Anselmo: "It's been a lot of fun piecing together this lineup with Philip. It's gonna be a wild one, so get your tickets while you still can!" More...

Unmistakable, husky German accent behind me. I glance over my shoulder, turn, step aside the river of disembarking passengers from the Lufthansa Airbus parked out in the drizzly gray. The veteran green-fatigue-jacketed metalhead, balding, sporting a life-without-parole graying goatee, sticks out his hand.
“Holger. Nuclear Blast.” We shake, he grins and nods at the Testament logo above my lapel, only partially obscured by my boarding pass. He slips me a company card - “Holger Tiefenbach, Distribution & Marketing” - and lifts a finger toward a sign down the corridor: “Matkatavarat.” Luggage.
As we stride through Finland’s Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, locate the carousel for Flight 848 from Frankfurt, and wait for our suitcases to materialize - I was forced to check mine at the last minute and have since developed acute missing-luggage paranoia - Holger brings me up to speed on our shared reason for being here: Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, sixteen years running, 2014 edition set to kick off tomorrow afternoon.
“It used to be held in Kaisaniemi Park, right in the middle of the city. It was the greatest. You’d show up, basically have an afternoon at the park, and then head straight to the bars nearby, when the sun was just barely set.” He seems to almost sigh while tossing off a plaintive, what-are-you-gonna-do shrug. “They moved the location three, four years ago.”
“So it’s not as much fun now?” I want to get my finger on the pulse of conventional wisdom.
He’s quick to clarify. “It’s still awesome. The new location just took some getting used to.” On our painless stroll through the open doorway that passes for an immigration barrier - the stamps and stern looks and “papers, please” stuff was handled back in Germany, natch - Holger gives an inside view of current happenings back at the Nuclear Blast bunker.
“We spent a lot of time promoting that Tuomas Holopainen solo album - the one about Scrooge McDuck,” he tells me. I haven’t heard it, and ask him how it is. “Not metal. That’s how it is,” he chuckles. “But cool if you’re into that wacky stuff, like the last Nightwish album.
“And we signed Slayer!” He clenches a victorious fist like a kid receiving his BB gun on Christmas. “Finally.”
We’ve reached the Arrivals lobby, and a leather-jacketed brunette gives a wave. Rachel Roth (WandererOfKalevala), Metalunderground.com photographer and correspondent, currently residing in Vantaa. We have a bus to catch, and before parting ways with Holger, I bum a cigarette, pocketing the e-cig I’ve been abusing for two months.
I make a half-hearted promise to myself not to do this too much during Tuska (and not to beat myself up for doing just that). Rationalization is still the great human sport. More...

The latest round of additions to the continually-expanding lineup for 2014's installment of the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival has been disclosed, including Massachusetts' own '90s hardcore punk act, Sam Black Church.
Confirmed as one of the main headliners of the event's third night, Saturday, April 19th, Sam Black Church's set at NEMHF 2014 will mark only the third performance since the group initially disbanded at the turn of the century, and first in Central Massachusetts since the late '90s.
Stated the band upon being asked to take part in the massive event this Spring: "It is amazing what the man we used to know as Ogre has done with the New England Metalfest! We are fucking excited to be a part of it once again!"
The organizers of the fest comment: "Formed in Boston, in June of 1988 by Jesse "Jet" Crandall (vocals), Ben Crandall (guitar), Richard G. Lewis (bass), and J.R. Roach (drums), Sam Black Church was known for their energetic live performances, playing a frenetic blend of hardcore, metal, and thrash. Over the years sharing bills with bands as diverse as Bad Brains, Clutch, Motörhead, Cro-Mags, Fear, and Helmet, they were one of the most popular hardcore bands in the Northeast United States during the 1990s. After releasing three full-lengths on Taang! Records, they left to join Wonderdrug where they remained until they retired in 2000 after releasing a total of seven albums. Since disbanding, Sam Black Church reunited for a sold-out show on September 22, 2007, at The Roxy in Boston, and played a another sold-out performance at Hometown Throwdown #16 with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones at House of Blues in Boston on December 29th, 2013. A documentary of their career by Duncan Wilder Johnson entitled Leave Behind a Groove in the Earth is scheduled for release in 2014."
