Heavy metal and video games are such an obvious combination that its baffling the collision doesn't happen more often. Despite four decades of games to work through, the number of titles that specifically revolve around metal themes or use heavy metal soundtracks is just abysmally low.
Today we're going to take another look at the limited options available, covering some old and some new entries that should be sitting on your shelf or taking up space in your Steam library.
For those who missed our previous three articles discussing various games with heavy metal soundtracks, be sure to go back and check 'em out (and let us know if you end up playing or re-playing any of these gems!):
Part 1: the amazing Brutal Legend, Saints Row III, Killing Floor 2, Pain Killer, and Guilty Gear X2 Reload
Part 2: Splatterhouse, Twisted Metal 2, The Witcher's bonus music disc, and Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And The Damned.
Part 3 (the retro edition!): Rock And Roll Racing, Beavis And Butthead, F-Zero X, Earthbound, and Heavy Metal Geomatrix
There's no time wasted when it comes to Canadian metal group Striker. In 2016, the band unleashed award-winning fourth album "Stand In The Fire" via independent label Record Breaking Records.
Kicking off the new year, these shredders return in 2017 with a fifth and self-titled studio album due out on February 24th, along with tours across the USA and Europe from January till mid April (dates listed below). Striker comments on the upcoming release:
"This is our no bullshit album. We cut out everything that wasn't absolutely necessary and kept everything short and to the point. We pray at the altar of heavy metal everyday, and there are some musical ideas that persist through time and some that don't. We focused in on what keeps listeners coming back and got rid of everything else. You can't climb Mount Everest dragging any useless shit with you; if you want to make it to the top, only bring with you what is absolutely necessary: Lethal Amounts of Shred." More...
Riding high on the success of the band's independent label, Record Breaking Records, Striker is among the fastest growing metal bands out of Canada. 2017 will see the release of a fifth album, and while we wait on full details, today a music video has come online for "Phoenix Lights" taken from previous release "Stand In The Fire."
Striker will also be on tour in the United States from January 15th to February 15th to go along with the pre-order campaign for the new album, in addition to providing direct support for Sonata Arctica in Europe from February 20th to April 10th, with more tours to be announced shortly.

Cauldron is out on the road with Warbringer, Enforcer, and Exmortus, but unfortunately the band will not make the Calgary tour date, and future dates will feature a fill-in vocalist. Cauldron comments:
"Unfortunately we've had to pull out of the Calgary show tonight due to a throat infection that has left Jason will barely any voice and the risk of permanent vocal damage if we continue. We will return tomorrow in Edmonton with Dan Cleary of Striker filling in on lead vocals.
"The rest of the boys will still be hanging at show tonight with our new record and merch for those who are interested (though will show up a little later). Sorry and thanks for understanding, we hope to see you again soon."

Edmonton, AB group Striker is ready to set out on a new adventure with forthcoming album "Stand In The Fire" being released via the band's own Record Breaking Records label on February 5th, 2016.
Today Striker reveals new single "Out For Blood," which can be heard below courtesy of Revolvermag. Guitarist Tim Brown comments:
"'Out for Blood' is our little slice of 80's cop-drama saxophone filled metal. We wanted to go completely over the top, stuff it full of solos and crazy shred, and just go nuts on every aspect on the song. Thrash metal Miami Vice!"
We've all got that one venue or record shop we fondly recall from back in a time when people bought music and mallcore wasn't a thing.
For this week's Pit Story, vocalist Dan Cleary of Striker not only reminisces fondly about one such mythical place, but also shares a tale of the amazing healing power of beer below. Photo courtesy of Dana Zuk.
A long time ago here in Edmonton we had this awesome venue/record store/screen printing place. We played some of our first shows ever there in the back of the Quonset Hut that was “Octopus Ink.” We used to go there and buy bullet belts (before they were being sold at the mall for posers) and rare vinyl like the $140 “Projects In The Jungle” by Pantera hanging up on the wall that none of us ever wanted to cough up the money for.
One night in particular things were getting a little rowdier than normal. We were about half way through our set and the pit in this tiny back room was getting intense. As usual everyone was good and drunk, there was always a lot of tailgating outside the place because it wasn't exactly... lets say... a "secure" venue. So the song kicks in, a fast one (can't remember which) and I watch in amazement as this short haired borderline black out drunk kid gets literally knocked the fuck out by some big league moshing.
Looking back at it maybe we should have stopped the song and made sure he was OK, but luckily for us there was a doctor in the room. A doctor who proceeded to lift this poor kid up, his eyes half shut clearly concussed, and pour beer down his throat. We thought for sure we were witnessing the final moments of a thrash youth, but to our surprise he sprung back to life and continued to mosh, albeit a little slower than before.
That's the first and only time I've seen someone get straight up knocked unconscious in a pit, and it turns out like everything else, beer is the answer.
Edmonton, AB metal band Striker is ready to set out on a new adventure with forthcoming album "Stand In The Fire" being released via the group's own Record Breaking Records label on February 5th, 2016.
Today Striker shares an exclusive playthrough lesson for the song "Too Late". Check it out below. Guitarist Tim Brown comments about the lesson:
"In this guitar lesson, I'll teach you how to play our new song 'Too Late' off of our upcoming album 'Stand in the Fire,' due out February 5th, 2016. This song is full of classic 80's metal tricks, like using the push (or syncopation) in your rhythm playing, using broken chords over a changing background riff, and last but not least, all of the epic shred and tapping to melt your fingers on. Though simple on first listen, there are lots of complex parts that can increase the difficulty and challenge that will make this song fun for all levels of guitarist to play." More...

"Happy Metal Annihilation Vol. 5" features a stunning 51 tracks and just under four hours of headbanging tunes from bands they've had the honour of doing PR for in 2015. Listen in below, while the full track listing is available after the jump.
"Full Speed or No Speed": prophetic words to live by from Striker’s debut full length release "Eyes in the Night." Since forming nearly 8 years ago, not a day goes by without the pedal to the metal attitude that smashes through the traffic jam of modern metal. "Stand in the Fire," Striker’s 4th studio album, prepares to shift the band into high gear and leave the competition in the dust. Guest performances from some of metal’s premiere players as well as other unprecedented collaborations prepare a high octane mix that is ready for ignition. This will be Striker’s strongest album to date, living a life set by one rule: no limits!
The Edmonton metal act will release "Stand in the Fire" on February 5, 2016. A pre-orders crowd-funding campaign was launched over at the band's website over at www.striker-metal.com. The campaign, with a massive set of perks (including an exclusive keg party and show in your basement), runs from through December 10, 2015.
For "Stand in the Fire," the band has enlisted the help of ex-Primal Fear drummer Randy Black for the drums and HammerFall's Fredrik Nordström for the production.
As a special treat, Striker has partnered with Metal Underground.com to present you the album's first music video - "Too Late."
On the video clip, the band commented: "For this video we wanted to channel the essence of Bon Jovi, but with less hairspray and more metal. It's hard to go wrong with a well done performance video, and we decided to put a modern twist on it with all the slow motion, colour, and moving lights in the background. We like to bounce back and forth between the high concept videos like our Keg Monster videos and simpler things like this; we need to show people what it's like at a Striker show! More pyro next time I swear!"
