Day 3: Sunday 7/17/2016
The best part of being Cuban/Irish is that I'm tan year round but still shrivel up like bacon when exposed to too much sunlight. I had the nastiest sunburn ever which even days later had my forehead covered in acne and the skin on my nose flaking off. And after looking at myself in the mirror, the first two words that came to mind were, “worth it.” As somebody too perpetually broke to wear sunscreen and already shelling out ungodly amounts of money just to stay fed and hydrated, a sunburn was a rather small price to pay to continue to have a really great time.
Since my arctic camo shorts were completely drenched in beer, I decided that now was the time to break out an even more egregious pair of camo shorts. Neon green and black are a pattern that can't blend into any environment which is why I bought them in the first place. Just the most outrageous thing I could possibly own... and now I had an excuse!
I missed the first three acts since I got there late. I kept waking up later each morning due to the sheer quantity of alcohol I was drinking as my car needed engine repairs and that meant that I wasn't driving. That fact that the gates opened earlier with each passing day didn't help either since Gemini Syndrome started playing a full half hour earlier than Through Fire did on Friday. So I ultimately have no opinions on Gemini Syndrome, Upon a Burning Body or We Came As Romans and I'm not going to fabricate a story just for the sake of comprehensiveness. There are some videos on Youtube and I watched them but I still lack anything resembling an opinion since bootlegs can never compare to the real thing. More...
Sumerian Records continues to celebrate its 10 year anniversary, announcing the “10 Years In The Black Tour” featuring label artists Asking Alexandria and Born Of Osiris.
I See Stars, After The Burial, Upon a Burning Body and Bad Omens round out the North American tour, which launches on October 25 at Seattle’s Showbox Sodo and wraps up in early December.
“I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for a tour,” Asking Alexandria guitarist Ben Bruce said. “Not only is this our first true North American headlining tour in two years, as well as our first real U.S. headliner with Denis [Stoff] as our vocalist, but this is also a tour celebrating the incredible 10 year journey of Sumerian Records. We couldn’t be more proud to headline such a pivotal tour package and to celebrate the music Sumerian has released. The tour will include our biggest production to date and the first trek out in support of our new album, The Black. This is going to be something incredibly special.”
“To see the celebration of a decade of Sumerian culminate with this tour is a true reflection of the communal spirit and vision that this label was built upon,” said Sumerian Records Founder Ash Avildsen. “Fans will get to see five headliners all go out together, which is very rare these days because of tour politics, egos, money and everything else that gets in the way of giving music lovers an unforgettable line-up. The fact that these five bands are sharing the stage together and still bringing an opening act to kick off the show makes this a truly special tour. I comment them all. Stay tuned for for lots of upcoming announcements about different activities for bands and fans to interact at at these shows that go beyond just watching them perform on stage. Mark my words: This will be the most progressive and interactive tour we have ever done. See you on the road.” More...

This week on the Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) returns after a jaunt in Europe, where he helped cover the celebrated Tuska Open Air Metal Festival in Helsinki, Finland.
A series of full-length articles are on the way, but for now, Mike shares a handful of impressions, recollections, and opinions. This year's Tuska featured numerous heavy hitters, including Dimmu Borgir, Anthrax, Emperor, Children Of Bodom, Carcass, Satyricon, and Insomnium. Check out Mike's initial breakdown of the experience, and learn which performances impressed (or surprised) him most.
Then it's on to a new review by co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead), this time of "From Parts Unknown" by eclectic Buffalo, New York noisemakers Every Time I Die. He's not yet sure how this varied release stacks up against his personal favorite, 2012's "Ex Lives," but is quick to assure you it brings plenty of thrills.
Finally, Kevin and Mike react to the recently announced Knotfest lineup - a thorough blend of mainstream and underground, old school and new - and the ill-advised kidnapping hoax by Texas deathcore band Upon A Burning Body, a publicity stunt that backfired spectacularly.
After an obvious hoax that for some reason got the fans really upset anyway when the band claimed front man Danny Leal had gone missing, Upon A Burning Body today officially announces a new album.
"The World Is My Enemy Now" is due for release on August 12th via Sumerian Records. The first single, titled "Scars," is now available online and can be heard below, courtesy of Revolvermag.com.
Update: Ash Avildsen from Sumerian Records has now posted this message online via Facebook:
"I woke up to a ton of missed calls and just saw all this stuff about Danny Leal of UABB posing as that he's been abducted or kidnapped. My phone hasn't stopped ringing since. As a child, we all learn the story 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' and it sticks within our consciousness for a reason. I do not condone this type of publicity stunt. This was done behind my back and I am not OK with it. In my eyes, there's never a time to use the possibility of real-life abduction, injury or murder of someone you care about to promote anything, especially an album. If you need to resort to that, then you have lost the plot. We as a society should have evolved past that way of thinking by now and especially within the rock/metal community, given all the tragedy that has happened in our world over the past few years. There are some people who owe us an apology."
Upon A Burning Body's Facebook page was updated with the following brief message earlier today:
"Breaking News: Danny Leal (singer of Upon A Burning Body) has been reported missing. He was last seen in his home town of San Antonio TX on Monday, June 30th."
It seems likely this is all a hoax to announce some upcoming activity, based on the only two posts from Danny Leal's personal Facebook page over the last several days (available below), and we'll check back in with more info as it becomes available. The band is due to kick off the Mayhem festival tour on July 5th.
