Haken was formed in 2007 by To-Mera guitarist and keyboardist Richard Henshall and his two school friends Ross Jennings (vocals) and Matthew Marshall (guitar). The band completed their lineup with a keyboardist they met on an online forum, Peter Jones, and Jones' close friend and drummer Raymond Hearne, and To-Mera guitarist Thomas MacLean became the band's bassist. They recorded a demo in 2007 that contained two tracks, 'Snow' and 'Souls'. With the demo they began to play small live venues in London, with some good response. In 2008 they then recorded four more songs, 'Manifolds', 'Blind', 'Sleeping Thoughts Wake' and 'Black Seed', and released a full-length demo including all six existing tracks.
Later in 2008, Marshall and Jones left the band to pursue other careers. Charlie Griffiths, the guitarist for the band Linear Sphere and Anchorhead became a full time member of the band. The keyboardist Diego Tejeida joined the band in late 2008 as well. As they began to tour more, even opening a few UK shows for King's X, Sensory Records recognized them and offered them a record deal. They began recording for their debut album, Aquarius, soon after, and it was released in March 2010.
Haken released their second album, Visions, in October 2011. On June 20, 2013 Haken announced their new album, The Mountain, which will be released on September 2 by InsideOut Music. The album was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren.

In conjunction with the UK's Prog Magazine, you can now hear the first track to be released from the album entitled "Atlas Stone." Check it out below. The band had this to say about the track:
"'Atlas Stone' has a delicate mix of soft chiming passages, jazzy interludes and crunching riffs and encapsulates the spirit of the 'The Mountain' perfectly. The song is exhilarating and uplifting but is tinged with a sense of urgency and desperation which reflects one's journey to the peak of the mountain. We can't wait to play it on our upcoming tour in September!"
Rich Henshall and Charlie Griffiths of the band also recently said of the new album: "Musically, the new songs feel rawer and more emotional than anything we've created in the past. All the essential elements of our sound are still there but have been delivered in a more gritty and focussed style. We've really pushed ourselves in all areas and truly believe that this album is a step up from any of our previous work, so we are extremely excited about sharing 'The Mountain' with everybody." Haken, which was covered in the Prog Power USA edition of our "Unearthing the Metal Underground" column, is currently working on an upcoming third album. The band has now posted the following message online about streaming a teaser for the album:
"OK, you guys have waited long enough! Head over to our bandpage now to listen to and download a few short snippets from the album 3 demo!!!! Merry Xmas guys and thanks for being so patient!"
This upcoming new release will follow the band's 2011 album "Visions" (reviewed here). Further details will be revealed shortly.
Each week, carrying on faithfully in the tradition of bringing the bands that are currently simmering in the underground up to a rolling boil, we feature several quality underground bands in their respective genres. With the 'power' side of the ProgPower USA XIII festival already unearthed in October, the 'prog' side remains unspoken for.
The ProgPower USA festival has taken turns at skewing the balance toward one genre, but has been notorious for bringing in bands who straddle the line between both in the eyes of those with a more liberal view of things. The lines of demarcation are not very clear and the next year's roster often ends up surprising many. Fortunately, many prog bands are able to weave their way into the system and capture some attention. One such band hopped the ocean to pre-empt their 2nd album release, unveiling that they would be selling the CD months in advance at the show.
Few bands brought the prog with such unabashed love as Haken in the festival's history. As the openers of Day Two of 2011, a spot happily filled this year by fellow prog-heads Beyond The Bridge, the boys of Haken unleashed a set list that included one song from their upcoming album, "Visions" (reviewed here,) but focused mostly on the first album, "Aquarius." Multiple melodic themes are developed throughout the albums, with expert re-interpretations for emotional impact linking up with the storylines. Both albums are concept albums, and both involve songs that go beyond the 20-minute mark, showing their prog side.
Haken is a five-piece, with keyboardist and Haken main brain Richard Henshall performing both keyboard and guitar duties. Henshall and Diego Tejeida both focus on crafting synthesizer sounds not heard elsewhere, which often makes for multi-faceted lead tones. Haken bassist Tom Maclean heads a prog metal sideproject by the name of To-Mera with Henshall assisting, as well.
Prog act Haken is currently offering a free download of the "Insomnia" song, taken off the band's latest album "Visions" (reviewed here), as well as a live version of "Celestial Elixir" off the band's "Aquarius" album (reviewed here). Haken comments on offering the song downloads:
"Here's a FREE download of Celestial Elixir LIVE at ProgPower USA in Atlanta, recorded in September 2011. Oh yes!
Haken has posted a bass instructional video clip online for part of the the title track off the band's new album "Vision" (reviewed here). The video is available below, and the band commented:
"By popular request, here is a demonstration of the tapped bass lick from the second verse of 'Visions' by Haken. Enjoy!"
If you attend Progpower, make sure you opt for the VIP gold badge over the regular. This will get you in to the “Insider Sale” where you will be able to purchase CDs of all of the bands that will be playing at next year’s festival. Gold badge attendees this year were treated to this sale in the vendor room long before the doors opened to regular attendees. Among the CDs on sale were some albums that previously had not received a US distribution, such as Amaranthe's debut.
When the doors finally opened, everyone was eager to get in and out of the bright Atlanta sun for another twelve hours. Being such an exclusive event, you could instantly strike up a conversation with any stranger you meet and be on the same page. With social barriers down, everyone was talking with everyone, discussing albums, bands, and previous ProgPower festivals.
UK-based progressive-symphonic band Haken was first up for the day, though the place was only half full about ten minutes before the band’s set. Clearly, the after-parties of the night before had been great. The venue eventually filled up in time for Haken’s second song. It was to be an exciting set, although a bit short. Seeing guitarists Richard Henshall and Charles Griffiths, as well as keyboardist Diego Tejeida rip some masterful solos did the trick on kicking hangovers from the night before. More...
