Haken was formed in 2007 by To-Mera guitarist and keyboardist Richard Henshall and his two school friends Ross Jennings (vocals) and Matthew Marshall (guitar). The band completed their lineup with a keyboardist they met on an online forum, Peter Jones, and Jones' close friend and drummer Raymond Hearne, and To-Mera guitarist Thomas MacLean became the band's bassist. They recorded a demo in 2007 that contained two tracks, 'Snow' and 'Souls'. With the demo they began to play small live venues in London, with some good response. In 2008 they then recorded four more songs, 'Manifolds', 'Blind', 'Sleeping Thoughts Wake' and 'Black Seed', and released a full-length demo including all six existing tracks.
Later in 2008, Marshall and Jones left the band to pursue other careers. Charlie Griffiths, the guitarist for the band Linear Sphere and Anchorhead became a full time member of the band. The keyboardist Diego Tejeida joined the band in late 2008 as well. As they began to tour more, even opening a few UK shows for King's X, Sensory Records recognized them and offered them a record deal. They began recording for their debut album, Aquarius, soon after, and it was released in March 2010.
Haken released their second album, Visions, in October 2011. On June 20, 2013 Haken announced their new album, The Mountain, which will be released on September 2 by InsideOut Music. The album was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren.

On February 3rd, 2017, London-based progressive metal band Haken will release first two albums "Aquarius" and "Visions" as new remastered 2CD editions as well as on vinyl for the very first time.
Check out a remastered version of the "Streams" track taken from "Aquarius" below. Vocalist Ross Jennings commented on the releases:
"As advocates of the physical format and fellow record collectors, it seems almost criminal that our first two albums have never had a vinyl release until now, so we are thrilled to finally give these albums a fresh presentation on the format they deserve. We have taken this opportunity to polish the sound of our beloved concept albums without going back over every little detail and rewriting history.
"In essence we wanted to give these albums a chance to stand shoulder to shoulder in sonic quality with 'The Mountain' and 'Affinity.' In addition to this and due to popular demand, both releases will also be available again on CD with instrumental, or 'Karaoke' versions of every track. This release marks 10 years since we formed the band and started putting together our first demos so it's a perfect time to reflect on these releases and appreciate what we've achieved so far. U.K. progressive act Haken issued a new music video for the track "Earthrise." The song is taken from the new release "Affinity," which was just issued a few weeks back via InsideOutMusic. A review for the release can be found at this location.
The band had this to say about the new video and album release: "'Earthrise' is definitely one of the more joyful, upbeat and colourful songs on Affinity so we wanted to have some fun with this video. Miles at Crystal Spotlight pulled it out of the bag again and the visuals he's created hopefully add a new dimension to a song that's already proving to be quite popular with our fans!"

U.K. progressive rock act Haken released a lyric video for the new track "The Endless Knot." The song is taken from the new release "Affinity," which is out on April 29th via InsideOut Music (read our review here).
On the track, the band had this to say: "The Endless Knot explores ideas of human survival instinct and the power of unity in the face of extinction. Musically, you could say this is new territory for us as we've taken sounds from dance and electronica music and blended them with our own brand of rock/metal. The end result hopefully gives the song a nice and upbeat, energetic feel. The visuals loosely follow the life-cycle of a star and Miles Skarin at Crystal Spotlight did an awesome job with the animation on this one!"
The new album's track list is as follows:
2. Initiate (check out music video here)
5. The Architect
7. Red Giant
8. The Endless Knot
9. Bound By Gravity

Haken is pleased to announce the release of "Affinity," the band's fourth full-length studio album and the follow-up to 2013's "The Mountain" (reviewed here) on April 29th, 2016.
Recorded during the winter months of 2015, "Affinity" marks a new approach to the song-writing process for Haken, as vocalist Ross Jennings explains: "It is the most collaborative we have ever been on an album. We wanted to develop and expand our sound by having every member contribute initial ideas from the very beginning of the process. It naturally takes longer to filter through the mass of material and fit it all together coherently, but this approach has helped to create something completely fresh whilst maintaining the core elements of Haken's sound."
The band once again called upon Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Devin Townsend, Between The Buried And Me) for mixing and mastering duties. "He is a wizard in this department! We are always confident his mix will bring out the best from our performance and this is no exception," remarks keyboardist Diego Tejeida.
Haken welcomes friend and Leprous frontman Einar Solberg mid-song for a spot of guest vocals at one one of the album's twists and turns. The full track listing is as follows:
1. affinity.exe [1:24]
2. Initiate [4:16]
3. 1985 [9:09]
4. Lapse [4:44]
5. The Architect [15:40]

"Happy New Year, everyone! 2016 is apparently gonna be the year of the fire-breathing armoured Cerberus surrounded by green snakes! Looking forward to that....
"Thanks to everyone who made 2015 such an epic year for Haken. We played more shows than ever, including our first ever North American tour with the does-what-it-says-on-the-tin Next To None and a little helping of the legendary Spock's Beard.
"We played some crazy festivals including the outrageous Hellfest Open Air Festival and even got to have our faces blown to bits by Meshuggah in Barcelona! Not to mention a cheeky little support slot for Devin Townsend and Dream Theater. Yes, that actually happened!
"Our first ever tour of Scandinavia saw us opening for Neal Morse and his band full of total gents! We even got to join the insane Between The Buried And Me on their Coma Ecliptic tour across Europe! And to round the year off, we went on a little cruise with a bunch of our favourite bands, friends and fans!
"Oh, and we also wrote and recorded an album that will enter all of your ears soon whether you like it or not and before you know it, we're gonna be pestering you with tour dates, ticket links and more limited edition cassette tapes (or not) than you'll know what to do with! Roll on 2016! Roll on ?#?H4KEN?!" More...

Supporting the band on most dates is Next to None, the band featuring Max Portnoy, son of prog drummer extraordinaire Mike Portnoy. InsideOut label mate Spock's Beard is on the bill for the dates in Quebec City and Montreal. Haken guitarist Charlie Griffiths had this to say about the imminent visit:
"One of our biggest ambitions since the beginnings of the band has been to tour the USA. For it to actually be happening is an amazing feeling. We honestly can't wait to get over there and play our music.
"We've only had a couple of opportunities to meet our American friends before; first at Prog Power USA in 2011 and then at Prog Nation at Sea in 2014 and the fans were incredibly passionate about the music. We're looking forward to visiting some new places and hopefully seeing a lot more new faces.
"We've put together a great set list covering the whole Haken discography and I really think they're going to love it. For a couple of the Canadian shows we're going to be sharing the stage with Spock's Beard, which is crazy because we've been fans of theirs for years. More...
Prog metal outfit Haken has released the first in a series of video tour diaries online, which can be seen below, and the band also comments: "We hope you enjoy Chapter 1 from our UK/Ireland tour with Leprous and Maschine back in October!"

London-based progressive metal band Haken is set to begin a U.K. & Ireland tour with Leprous & Maschine this week, before new EP "Restoration" is released (October 27th in Europe, November 10th in the U.S.).
To celebrate, Haken has launched a stream of the longest track on the album, titled "Crystallised," as well as a competition to win a signed copy of the vinyl EP, a t-shirt & a poster. Check out the track below, and enter the competition at this location.
The band also recently launched a brand new video for the track "Darkest Light," which can be seen here. The new EP's track listing is:

U.K. progressive metal act Haken released a music video for the re-worked track "Darkest Light." The song appears on the upcoming new EP release "Restoration," which will be released in the U.S. on November 11th via Inside Out Music as a digital release only.
The band had this to say: "'Darkest Light' was our first chance to work creatively with our new bass player Conner Green. It was a natural fit right from the start as not only did he bring with him some insanely cool bass playing, but also a great positive energy that made the whole Restoration EP incredibly fun to make."
Ray adds: ''Darkest Light' is based on 'Blind', one of our favourite tracks from the original 07/08 demo. We've managed to chop the old song in half, cut away all the excess fat and produce a 6 minute rowdy riff roller-coaster that will surely find a home in the heavier side of our live show."
"Restoration" is comprised of three reworked and updated songs which originally appeared on their 2007/08 self-produced demo, and the release has been mixed & mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios. It will be released as a digital download, and a vinyl LP including CD.
The track listing for the EP is:
1. Darkest Light (6:44)
2. Earthlings (7:52)
3. Crystallised (19:23)

Following the release of Haken's critically acclaimed album "The Mountain" last year (see review here), plus plenty of touring and even three nominations at this year's Progressive Music Awards, the London-based progressive metallers are extremely pleased to announce the release of the digital-only 'Restoration' EP in the US on the 11th of November 2014 via Inside Out Music.
"Restoration" is comprised of three reworked and updated songs which originally appeared on their 2007/08 self-produced demo. The release was mixed & mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios.
Vocalist Ross Jennings explains: "Redoing a few of our favorite tracks from the demo is something we've talked about doing for ages and the fans have been asking for it constantly. We were also excited about working creatively with our new bassist Conner Green, so this seemed like the perfect way to welcome him aboard."
Guitarist Charlie Griffiths continues: "merely re-recording the demo songs would have felt musically redundant and dishonest, since three of us didn't play on the original recordings. The band's sound has evolved considerably in the last few years so we used the demo tracks as a starting point and gave ourselves free reign to re-imagine them and make them relevant to who we are today. These are now the definitive versions and we couldn't be happier with how they turned out."
The final track "Crystallised" is a no holds barred epic including guest "cameo" appearances by Pete Rinaldi (Headspace) and Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic/Flying Colors).
The track listing for the EP is:
1. Darkest Light (6:44)
2. Earthlings (7:52)
3. Crystallised (19:23) More...

Portnoy takes you band by band and leads you through the musical adventure that attendees have to look forward to at this one of a kind, floating prog festival taking place February 2014. Mike Portnoy had this to say:

It is my ultimate dream lineup ranging from legends like Jon Anderson & Adrian Belew to Prog trailblazers like Spock's Beard & the Flower Kings to today's most extreme cutting edge artists like Devin Townsend and Periphery.
"I am also excited to be playing with Bigelf, PSMS & Transatlantic...the final encore of which will see Transatlantic & Jon Anderson joining forces for a one-time only set of Yes classics! This is going to be a historic experience and the Prog event of the Millennium! You will not want to miss out on this!"
The lineup features Adrian Belew's Power Trio, Devin Townsend Project, King's X, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Pain Of Salvation, Anathema, Riverside, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, The Safety Fire, Tony Harnell & Bumblefoot, Bigelf, Beardfish, The Dear Hunter, Haken, Jolly, Anneke van Giersbergen, Mark Mikel and Next to None.
