Guitarist Ilya Lipkin is back once again with his solo project A Foggy Realm. Now two years after the debut, "Twilight," he has unleashed the band's second album "Quasar & Void." All six songs are streaming over on Bandcamp, along with the debut. He has reworked the ambient drone concept and brought in death metal vocalist Eugene (Jack Vegas) Tkachev from fellow Russian bands Back Door To Asylum and Fatal Band. Also featured on the release is special guest Evgeniy "Rasputin" Tkachev, performing percussion on "Needles."

This week we take a look at three bands from the vast country of Russia. Believe it or not, rock and heavy metal music was being made by Russian bands ever since 1960s, but it was not until the 1980s that the Soviet Union allowed such music to be released officially. Since the collapse of the Communist empire in 1991, the Russian metal scene has continued to grow and metal artists from the West routinely perform in the country, where legend has it some of the craziest fans in metal are to be found. Below is just a short example of the some of the band that come from Russia, perhaps not with love.
A Foggy Realm
From Russia's capital city, Moscow natives A Foggy Realm formed in 2009 by accomplished composer and musician, Ilya Lipkin, performing a mix of doom metal and ambient in an instrumental fashion, prefering instead to let their music do the talking. The Russian Association of Independent Genres (R.A.I.G.) has posted instrumental/doom/ambiet band A Foggy Realm's "Twilight" EP for free download (40+ mb - 5 tracks - 28 min.).
An accomplished composer and musician, Ilya Lipkin set up his A FOGGY REALM in the end of 2009 to explore the mysterious realms of ambient-and-drone electroacoustics played live with an electric guitar and a bunch of effect pedals. "Twilight" EP is a debut release by this project. Recorded in January 2010, it features five relatively short pieces consisting of thick multi-layered guitar ambiances ranging from the obscured psyched-out to the threat-suffused and doom-riffed.
