The Armstrong Metal Fest will be taking place on July 20th and 21st, with full details available over at the festival's official website. The organizers of the event have now issued the following statement:
"On July 20th-21st, the beautiful Okanagan will play host to the largest metal festival in Western Canada. Over the past few years. metal fans from even the farthest depths of North America have dragged themselves out of their dingy bars, wiped the stale beer from their mouths and joined together in a two day long journey filled with beer, boobs and heavy metal. In the past, Armstrong Metalfest has welcomed bands such as Three Inches of Blood into our small community, and this year will be joined by bands such as Thor, Into Eternity, Nylithia and Ninjaspy. Our list of notable bands will only increase as the years go on.
"In only a few years, Armstrong Metalfest has grown from a locally known one day event, to two days of unforgettable music and events. Beginning as Armstrong Open Air, AMF was founded in the parents' driveway of a dedicate metalhead. The first year featured locally known bands, who performed on a hastily built stage in front of a barn. Over a hundred people battled the rain and moshed on the gravel driveway, creating a soup of blood, rain and dirt that surely must have seeped into the towns water supply. The first event was such a success that there was an immediate cry for more. Soon word spread over British Columbia and filtered into the surrounding provinces and the United States.
"By the third year Armstrong Metalfest had evolved into a two day festival and moved onto festival grounds at the Hassen Arena, in the heart of Armstrong. Our new location was met with a public outcry, as local churches rallied against us. Accused of encouraging crime, Satanism and rape, churches held town meetings demanding that we be expelled from the city. Our website and promotional videos were attacked, as church goers expressed worries that their children would be beaten up, raped and sodomized if they were to attend. More...

Vancouver, Canada technical metal act Nylithia has posted its new music video online for streaming. The video was filmed for the track "Immersed In The Maniacal" and features raw footage captured during the recent riots in the band's hometown. The band commented on the video by saying;
"We incorporated shots of some of the insanity, or the 'maniacal,' that was encountered in the most widely video documented riot in history, right here in our hometown after the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup Final. We mixed it with footage of us playing in front of cookie cutter, manicured lawn, neighbourhoods where everything looks the same. In our opinion, equally as maniacal as the riot itself."
The track is to be included on the band's forthcoming new album "Hyperthrash" which the band plan to release in a unique way. Speaking on this the band offered the following;
"Nylithia has devised our own method for releasing our upcoming self-produced album. The focus MUST be put back onto individual songs, re-instilling each track with the value it deserves. Therefore we have a new model: we will be releasing our new album, one song at a time, for FREE download via Nylithia.com. Each MP3 will be accompanied by a video, lyrics, and a piece of original artwork by 'Infector EP' artist, Humanburger Jones."

Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am revisiting Vancouver, Canada’s underground metal scene. While last time we gave some of the city's death metal bands the spotlight, this time I'm taking a look at the city’s more experimental metal acts. There is no doubt that this west coast Canadian city is abundant in metal talent, but beneath the piles of death metal and hardcore/metalcore acts lay a handful of exceptionally talented progressive and experimental bands. This week we will be taking a closer look at three of these bands.
Nylithia is an absolute force in every aspect. Its music is insanely technical and vastly diverse. While being labeled as a death metal act, Nylithia combines stylistic elements from many different areas. Technical death metal, progressive metal, ambient and melodic thrash metal are all combined into one fluent sound. The members who come together in Nylithia are also exceptionally young and are one of the youngest active bands in the Vancouver metal scene. A debut EP was released in 2008 by the name of “Infector,” and the band is currently setting up some studio time to record its second album and debut full length for a mid-2011 release. Nylithia has already made news around the world when they debuted a music video for its adaptation of a Super Mario theme song, which Metalunderground.com covered. Do not be surprised if you start to hear alot more about Nylithia in 2011. Its extremely entertaining debut music video for the track “Replicants” is available for viewing below. Nylithia may be underground today, but could easily become a household name in extreme metal in the years to come.
