What really attracted me to this show, in addition to the prospect of multiple interviews, was the sheer diversity of the tour package. It was assembled as a promotional tour by Victory Records to showcase some of their big and emerging rock/metal acts, and early on, I’d gathered from a mere glance at the bill that every band would sound substantially different. As it turns out, that wasn’t the half of it.
Happy coincidence placed me in the great state of Virginia, on my annual pilgrimage to my childhood roots, when Otep & Co. stopped at Jaxx in Springfield. I hadn’t been to Jaxx in eight years, so this show was more or less an extension of my nostalgic long-weekend romp through my past. To boot, Saturday, June 18th was beautiful and sunny, and the late afternoon and evening were shaping up to be quite pleasant too. I arrived early with my brother, wingman, and fellow metal fan Will “Fresh Prince” Smith as the line outside the door was beginning to form, and in due time, we’d knocked out a pair of killer interviews with Paul Ablaze and Ari Mihalopoulos – devoted fitness freaks and smiling frontmen for support acts Blackguard and Destrophy, respectively. Unfortunately, Otep herself was battling a sore throat, and her diplomatic tour manager Tristan was forced to cancel my planned interview so she could save her voice for that night’s performance. On the upside, I was promised a chance to make it up via telephone, and our names remained on the guest list.
While Jaxx hosts innumerable high-profile metal acts, it is not a large club – the capacity is considerably less than 1,000. That occasionally makes for a tight squeeze, but the atmosphere is pretty cozy and the layout is comfortably symmetrical. The small box office lobby at the venue’s rear corner leads to an open, dimly lit space with a long bar, flanked by two narrow corridors (along with two pairs of restrooms) that open up into the venue proper. At this point, you’ll find yourself standing on a raised platform that rings the stage in a horseshoe, with another bar in the center rear, and space for merch tables along the sides. Pretty standard, but streamlined and efficient. I enjoyed taking it all in and soaking up the lingering memories from my high school days, back before I could legally order a drink… That reminded me to get my ass to the bar and christen it. Otep Shamaya has posted the folllowing statement online regarding her band's forthcoming studio album, titled "Atavist."
"This album is a return to the umbra, to the darkest parts of me. I am fortifying this fortress of sound with Cyclopean masonry. The language on my lips is forged from forbidden tongues 12 lifetimes old. I am the heart of the gorgon, the broken mind of the lunatic, the courage of the martyr, the voice of the insurrectionist, the agog of the alchemist, I am the defiance in the aching souls waiting for the flame, I am the mighty Minotaur raging against the labyrinths of isolation and sadness. There is a purposeful primal spirit to this record, a coded provocation to remember out connection to the infinite, to the mysterious, to each other."

"Well folks, Contrary to whatever idiots out there in metal land that are saying that any of the National Acts on the Fest are dropping out is a complete lie! I say this! Fuck them all! Joining in on the growing roster of musicians who have commented on the BP oil spill, Otep front woman Otep Shamaya has issued the following statement:
"My friends, I find myself deep in the rolling green of the beautiful Southern territory of flavorful Fayetteville, Arkansas. The hills are rich with a monochrome flora and the arching landscape is crested by a silky blue sky brimming with billowing clouds moving slowly overhead like an enormous ghost armada returning victorious from war. The heat is thick and sweltering. It is a strange and wondrous sensory experience.
"I see all this and am amazed how anyone could live surrounded by such beauty but care so very little about maintaining it. I wonder if future generations will ever believe days like this actually existed or will they assume that these are just the words of a demented mind twisted with fantasy or folklore? Perhaps they will lament on the rugged Eden that their ancestors took for granted and squandered in the heavy stink of apathy and inaction? More...

Otep frontwoman, Otep Shamaya, has issued the following comments on the passing of 38 year old bassist Paul Gray of Slipknot:
“One of my earliest memories of Paul was our first tour of Ozzfest together - watching him mow down a 10 foot high fence in a 'borrowed' golf cart and that famous deviant, yet innocent grin of his as he scampered back to his bus. And then I witnessed his wonderful insanity on stage. It is painful to write about Paul in the past tense. But he was, as the inscription on Jim Morrison's headstone reads 'kata ton daimona eautou,' true to his own spirit. Part mystic, part madman, Paul was a savagely beautiful human being, an incredible writer, musician, & performer, and an amazing friend.
"For those of us he touched through friendship or by his incredible music, there is some anger and outrage at this loss, the senselessness of it, but most of all, it is the heavy drapes of sadness that devours us. Another candle fades into the night; another shadow ascends into the light. Rest in power, my friend. Shake the walls of paradise for us.”
Otep has posted a new music video for the song "Rise, Rebel, Resist" online. Watch the video below:
