Latest Otep News
Below is our complete Otep news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
Los Angeles California's Otep has signed with Austrian-based Napalm Records. Producer Howard Benson will be handling the productions duties on the band's new album that is due out in 2016.
Otep commented on joining the Napalm Records Roster: "Signing with Napalm Records is one of the most exciting alliances I've ever made. I haven't felt this excited to write a new album since 'Sevas Tra.'
"There's a lot of work to do, a lot of music to write, a lot of things to say, a lot of injustices to confront and a lot of madness to summon and capture. To be able to forge this sacred alchemy with the dark brilliance of producer Howard Benson is a dream come true."
Napalm Records A&R Demetri Benoist commented about the signing of Otep: "Beyond excited to be working with such a polarizing artist who stands for something and is not afraid to speak their mind. This is a new beginning in Otep's history and Napalm Records is committed to making it the most successful! Let the Otep Revolution begin."
The 45th episode of the MetalUnderground.com Official Podcast opens up with "Weighing Down" by New England's band of the week In The Red.
This week co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Dustin Beaudrey ("F.A.N.") also discuss some hot topics brewing in the metal community as of late like Lars Ulrich being blamed for the lack of bass sound on Metallica's 1988 album "...And Justice For All," Veil of Maya adding clean vocals with the new song "Mikasa," and Otep dropping out of yet another tour due to the band's singer being violated.
We then conclude with In The Red's "Blink of an Eye" playing us out. Check out the full new podcast at this location and feel free to leave us your feedback!
Following Otep dropping off the Civil Unrest tour after accusing a member of Terror Universal of sexual harrasment, Ill Nino has now issued the following statement about the tour going on without either group:
"Ill Nino does not condone any forced act of violence or sexual nature towards any human beings, nor will we tolerate violations of one's personal space.
"This also goes for cyber-bullying, or making demeaning comments towards ANYONE on social media. We strongly support equality for all.
"We would like to draw closure by stating that the Civil Unrest Tour will continue without participation from either Otep or Terror Universal. We're looking forward to hitting the road, reuniting with our fans and friends, and also sharing the stage with our tour brothers, and sisters, Kittie & 36 Crazyfists. Stay tuned, more bands to be added!!"
Update: Terror Universal has now parted ways with its front man without stating a specific reason for the split, but it appears likely to be triggered by these events.
Otep has dropped off The Civil Unrest Tour due to issues with another band slated to be on the bill, with front woman Otep Shamaya alleging sexual assault on the part of that group's front man. The Otep Facebook page released this message to fans:
"Before the rumor mill begins: We dropped off the Civil Unrest tour because Terror Universal's molester singer violently grabbed my crotch on our last tour. He’s a drunken joke and a fucking scumbag. He’s lucky security handled it before I or my band could.
"We gave them a shot to play in front of our fans and we were repaid by this drunken jackass violating me during the meet and greet in front of our fans.
"We made it very clear that we will never play any show that has Terror Universal on it. We don’t tolerate any kind of passive sexual violence. We owe that to our fans and I never want to experience anything like that again especially from an opening act we were trying to help by giving them exposure to our TRIBE.
"We will be headlining in May-June and give the TRIBE a proper RIOT without any pants rapists on the bill. Onwards & upwards."
However it appears not everyone agrees with Otep's recounting of events, as The Civil Unrest Tour's Facebook page was just updated with this message in response: More...

What really attracted me to this show, in addition to the prospect of multiple interviews, was the sheer diversity of the tour package. It was assembled as a promotional tour by Victory Records to showcase some of their big and emerging rock/metal acts, and early on, I’d gathered from a mere glance at the bill that every band would sound substantially different. As it turns out, that wasn’t the half of it.
Happy coincidence placed me in the great state of Virginia, on my annual pilgrimage to my childhood roots, when Otep & Co. stopped at Jaxx in Springfield. I hadn’t been to Jaxx in eight years, so this show was more or less an extension of my nostalgic long-weekend romp through my past. To boot, Saturday, June 18th was beautiful and sunny, and the late afternoon and evening were shaping up to be quite pleasant too. I arrived early with my brother, wingman, and fellow metal fan Will “Fresh Prince” Smith as the line outside the door was beginning to form, and in due time, we’d knocked out a pair of killer interviews with Paul Ablaze and Ari Mihalopoulos – devoted fitness freaks and smiling frontmen for support acts Blackguard and Destrophy, respectively. Unfortunately, Otep herself was battling a sore throat, and her diplomatic tour manager Tristan was forced to cancel my planned interview so she could save her voice for that night’s performance. On the upside, I was promised a chance to make it up via telephone, and our names remained on the guest list.
While Jaxx hosts innumerable high-profile metal acts, it is not a large club – the capacity is considerably less than 1,000. That occasionally makes for a tight squeeze, but the atmosphere is pretty cozy and the layout is comfortably symmetrical. The small box office lobby at the venue’s rear corner leads to an open, dimly lit space with a long bar, flanked by two narrow corridors (along with two pairs of restrooms) that open up into the venue proper. At this point, you’ll find yourself standing on a raised platform that rings the stage in a horseshoe, with another bar in the center rear, and space for merch tables along the sides. Pretty standard, but streamlined and efficient. I enjoyed taking it all in and soaking up the lingering memories from my high school days, back before I could legally order a drink… That reminded me to get my ass to the bar and christen it. More...
