Diamond's Mine: The Best Of 2023

Another year over and another one that not many will be looking back on with any sense of fondness when it comes to the state of the world, but it was a pretty good one if one only looks at the metal music. We've seen bands break onto the scene and said goodbye to some favourites such as Kiss, The Agonist, Dark Fortress and Terrorizer (before saying "I thought you left?" to that last one when they announced their return seven months later.) Others announced plans to step away, either temporarily such as Nightwish and Cirith Ungol, other permanently such as Sepultura, Issues and Destrage. While it's sad to see bands go, it's always nice to welcome new names, which leads me nicely to...

Best Newcomer

There was plenty to choose from this year. My personal qualification is a band which released their debut full length album, so Cobra Spell, featuring former Burning Witches and Cypta guitarist Sonia Anubis leading the charge was a strong contender with their brand of 80s flavoured sleaze metal. Speaking of familiar names, Atheist frontman Kelly Shaefer, along with other members of the band brought the world Till The Dirt, whose debut album, "Outside The Spiral" subverted expectations, while fans of death metal will want to seek out Denmark's Plaguemace pretty quickly. Stoner and doom metal had a very strong showing with the likes of High Priest and Auralayer. In fact, it's from this genre that we find this year's winner of the award and appropriately for the roots of the style, it's a Birmingham band.

Margarita Witch Cult

With the kind of name which won't be forgotten in a hurry, the Midlands trio marked the release of their debut album in style, opening the Black Heart in Camden at this year's Desertfest. The album itself is everything fans love about classic, riff based heavy metal, providing plenty to sink one's teeth into such as exciting tempos, catchy choruses ("Diabolical Influence" will stay in your head for days) and as mentioned, some seriously tasty riffs. Stoner, doom, psychedelica and even a little thrash makes this self-titled effort an essential addition to any Sabbath worshiper's collection, while the group should definitely be seen live as soon as you get the opportunity. Angelus Apatrida Shares New Music Video

Spain‘s leading thrash metal band Angelus Apatrida are getting closer to unleash their 8th studio album "Aftermath," coming out on October 20th, 2023 via Century Media Records worldwide.

In order to further pre-promote the upcoming release, Angelus Apatrida are now releasing a second single with the song "To Whom It May Concern" today, which can also be seen in a video scripted and directed by Juan Castillo, J. L. Auñón and Lalo Davia / Kameo Producciones, below.

Vocalist/guitarist Guillermo Izquierdo commented about "To Whom It May Concern" as follows: "Let me introduce you one of the most complex, personal, deep and solid songs we‘ve ever written. This is an unfinished letter written to whom it may concern, an open-hearted composition with very deep and emotional music and lyrics, together with super heavy, fast riffs, crazy drums and licks, including one of the most epic guitar solos that David has ever composed. The video is a work of art again done by Kameo Producciones, it reflects perfectly every single part, light and dark side of the music and the lyrics themselves. It‘s a long song, but you will want more. Please, enjoy it." More...

Angelus Apatrida Releases New Video

The release of the upcoming 5th studio album by Spanish thrash metal band Angelus Apatrida is drawing nearer: "Hidden Evolution" will be unleashed on January 19th in Europe and January 27th in North America (digital only) via Century Media Records.

In anticipation of its release, today the band is now launching the album's first promotional video clip for the song "End Man." Check it out below.

The clip was directed by Adriana Lorente and Sara Cort, who already worked with Angelus Apatrida on the preview clips for "You Are Next" and "Blast Off." The group comments:

"Behind the meaning of 'End Man' lies the desperation of someone who has reached the limit, on the verge of exploding. Going though certain tough situations in life creates inner demons that sometimes show when least expected. That feeling of stressing intensity is present during the whole song, only letting loose when choruses appear. Adriana and Sara have once again done an amazing work adapting the concept of the song to a video by melting the meaning of this track to the inner general concept of the album and its artwork, based around the astronaut (See here!) with such an amazing and super detailed result."

The new album's track listing is as follows:

1. Immortal
2. First World Of Terror
3. Architects
4. Tug Of War
5. Serpents On Parade
6. Wanderers Forever
7. End Man

Angelus Apatrida Announces New Album

Spanish thrash band Angelus Apatrida is ready for a new attack and is currently finishing up the last details of an upcoming album coming out via Century Media Records.

The same creative staff that worked on the band's previous two studio recordings, "Clockwork" (2010) and "The Call" (2012), has teamed up again for this new effort, entitled "Hidden Evolution." The album was once again recorded in Moita, Portugal at Ultrasound Studio with producer Daniel Cardoso and will be released on January 19th in Europe and January 27th in North America (digital only).

Angelus Apatrida comments: "It's been the hardest recording work we ever done, but we couldn't be happier about how it sounds. Inspiration for the music in this album came from all the experiences we lived through on the road during the last two years and the result sounds more elaborated. There's some of the hardest and fastest stuff we ever done, but also some of the more melodic stuff we ever composed.

"Working with Daniel and the people from Ultrasound Studios has been killer as usual. Moita is a small, cozy and quiet town close to Lisbon, and it's been the third time we recorded there. Their narrow streets made of stone, the beautiful river and decadent squares feel like home; the perfect home for us, a place to get away from other things and fully concentrate."

The album's track listing is as follows:

1. Immortal
2. First World Of Terror
3. Architects
4. Tug Of War
5. Serpents On Parade
6. Wanderers Forever
7. End Man
8. Speed Of Light
