haarp, Drone Throne, And A Hanging In New Orleans

Siberia had a good crowd for this Monday night show. But it wasn’t an ordinary event either; it was co-owner and bartender Daphne’s birthday bash. The always heavy haarp, Drone Throne, and A Hanging came out to play during the party. The notoriety of the lineup was noticed by the local newspaper, a surprise I found while looking at the weekend's entertainment, in which it got a short write-up and included a picture of haarp’s guitarist Grant Tom playing at the same bar of this night’s show. I was able to get footage of all of the bands, the bellydancers, and some fun interludes with band members and regular concert-goers. You can watch the two videos below. More...

SXSW Music 2011, Day 1

SXSW Music officially began on Wednesday, March 16th. My schedule was jam-packed and I quicky fell behind on reporting on the days’ events at the conference, which started with an interactive conference on March 11th.

Despite being out late for a show the night before, I decided to head over to the conference center to catch my first music talk: “Welcome to the Music Business - You’re Fucked.” I didn’t have great expectations from the description alone. Once seated, I was hearing great things about the speaker, who turned out to be Martin Atkins, author of “Tour:Smart” and former drummer for Ministry and Killing Joke among others. More...

Metalunderground.com's Best of 2010 Awards

The Grammys have been awarded, February is winding down, and we are officially late with our Best Of Year in Metal acknowledgments. So let's get to it. Like every year, I polled our diverse staff of metalheads to obtain their picks in several categories for 2010.

2010 was an interesting year in metal. Was it good? Yes. But not what one might expect at the outset. There were a lot of releases by big names, but most did not make the splash one would expect. Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie, Fear Factory, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquility, and Living Sacrifice all put out decent albums, but nothing too bold or worth raving over. 2010 was one more year removed from the fading metalcore trend; a year in which we could savor thrash's second life, and melodic death metal is still living strong. When the trendiest things are a return to thrash and technical metal (despite losing much of its death metal influences), that's not too bad from a metal perspective.

It's hard to say 2010 was a year for the underground to shine. The true underground bands rarely get widely noticed. But there were quite a few lesser known bands making names for themselves and grabbing their fair share of attention last year. Why is this? Is it a sign of a changing of the guard in light of the aging greats, and perhaps despite the thrash revival? It's hard to say, but personally, I discovered a lot of new bands that I thoroughly enjoy, so I am all for continuing along this path.

Let's get down to the details and talk about those bands that made 2010 a solid year for heavy metal by announcing the Metalunderground.com staff picks for 2010. The staff picks include the following categories: Best Metal Album of 2010, Best Metal DVD of 2010, Best Metal Newcomer of 2010, Best Live Act of 2010, and Most Anticipated Release for 2011. More...

Arson Anthem Holds A Meeting In New Orleans

The Hangar was ready for the AA meeting; the floors were redone in a slick finish to make the mess easier to clean, the bar was stocked with booze, and the flasks were full. I’m talking about the Arson Anthem show, of course. I had to prepare for such an event as any Louisianian would, a tailgate complete with fried chicken, fold-out chairs, and good friends. We all had a great time before the show, but the best was yet to come. The crowd wasn’t the a-typical metalheads I thought would show up, although quite a few did. There were younger Down fans, older yuppie Pantera fans, and the curios onlooker all wanting to see what Phil Anselmo looks like behind a guitar, no doubt. I knew what to expect from Arson Anthem, but the show took some strange turns indeed. More...

haarp's CD Release Show For "The Filth"

Sibera, the latest metal/punk bar hosting shows many days of the week in the darkly lit side streets of the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, quickly filled with many local metal patrons of all variables: musicians, artists, fans, Housecore Records affiliates, and beer-swilling metal supporters alike. I myself rushed from UNO’s graduation ceremony in cap and gown straight down Elysian Fields Avenue to be there for this special night: haarp’s album release show for the band's first full-length “The Filth.” More...

haarp Posts New Song and New Album Artwork Online

New Orleans heavy metal band haarp has just posted a brand new track on their MySpace page, entitled "All, Alone." The track is cut from their upcoming new album, "The Filth," to be released on November 23rd, 2010 on HOUSECORE RECORDS. The band has also posted the album art on their MySpace page, illustrated by famed artist Paul Booth. "The Filth" is produced by label owner Philip Anselmo.

“When Phil called me all excited about this new brutality and its unique concepts he needed cover art for, I could immediately tell his conviction and excitement far surpassed his usual dark vigor,” recalls album artist Paul Booth. “Of course, I was in. Once Keith presented me with one of haarp's lyrical concepts in regards to Gluttony, it was actually amazing to me how similar their ideas were to my own. This collaborative vision was meant to be, as far as I was concerned. I look forward to creating more art to this slow and painfully twisted epic of doom.”

The Housecore Records Showcase

Housecore Records is pumping out some awesome music these days. Although relatively quiet in the past, it’s owner Philp Anselmo of Down and Pantera notoriety is working with the bands he signed on to get their albums out, get them on the road, and get Housecore out there for everyone to enjoy. To celebrate the beginning of something big, Housecore Records put on a show of a few of their biggest bands; sludge legends Crowbar, Phil’s favorites haarp, and classic thrashers Warbeast all the way from Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas. I was able to get footage of each band of the night. The decibel level was very high, however, so the sound is slightly grainy. If you see any people wearing shiny party hats in the videos, it’s because it was my birthday. I passed out the hats to my friends and they went in the mosh pit with them. More...

haarp Crushes The Locals

Not the first venue on the metal circuit, the Allways Lounge was clean and quiet. A pair of boots covered in disco ball mirrors hung from the ceiling lighted by a single stagelight. A decrepit paino sat next to the low, round stage. The bands of the night were all different from each other; each had a style miles away from the next. Punk, jam, and sludge; what a tasty mix. Of course, every band was incredible in their own way. And although it didn’t take place in the smelly, dank places we’re used to, it was kind of nice to breathe semi-fresh air. More...

Pentagram Spreads Evil Over New Orleans

People turned out in droves to see the show with so many amazing bands on the bill. If they couldn’t afford to get in, they would hang outside and listen because it was just too good to miss completely. The slow, swampy, southern metal was complimented so well by the high humidity and heat of the night. Beer flowed (everywhere) and ears became numb as each of four bands took turns breaking amps.
