While the rest of the world went to work or whatever it is they normally would do on a Friday, the contingent of the lovers of loud and fast music down on Peachtree St in Atlanta were being awesome. The day that many metal fans were waiting for since Day Two of the 2011 festival had finally come around -- Day One of the 2012 festival had arrived, bringing with it headliners Epica and support bands Sinbreed, Kingcrow, Amaranthe, Serenity, Primordial, and Redemption. The night before, Nightwish and Kamelot had thrilled in the same venue.
With several levels of ticket options available to attendees, gold badge attendees were given early access to the festival's merchandise room. Like the gaping maw of a hungry beast, the doors to the merchandise room were opened at noon and soon swallowed absurd amounts of money with little effort from the wallets of attendees. For attendees who found the dilemma of "I just need ONE more CD," without having the money for it, there was an ATM around the hall so that "one more" could then turn into "ten more" without a worry. Amaranthe, featuring Dragonland, Dreamland, Nightrage, Mercenary members and fronted by Elize Ryd (Kamelot (live)), are set to record the band's sophomore full length release. The band will enter the studio on September 24th to record the as of yet unnamed LP and follow up to the 2011 self-titled release for Spinefarm Records. The band will work again with producer Jacob Hansen in his Hansen studios in Ribe, Denmark. The album is set for a tentative early 2013 release.
Guitarist Olof Mörck had the following comments:
"So it is finally revelation time! In between our constant and never-ending touring we have tirelessly been working on our next album, which is really starting to come together. We have lived and breathed the same 12 songs from the first album every day for a year now, and to introduce a number of completely fresh tracks will really lift Amaranthe to the next level! The theme and atmosphere of the album is futuristic and ultra modern, something underlined by the first teaser poster. The music itself will be instantly recognisable as Amaranthe, but there is definitely a new and unique twist to the songs. People often ask us if there is a big pressure to follow up such a successful album, and always say 'no, not one bit'. Not when you sit down and listen to new tracks such as 'Invincible', 'Burn with Me' and 'Stardust'. We simply cannot wait to hit the road all over the world with these new babies!"
Amaranthe will make its U.S. live debut at ProgPower USA in Atlanta next month.
The ProgPower USA festival is approaching its thirteenth year, but if you were to look at the number of international bands who have made the Atlanta-based festival the site of their US debut, you would find that number even more impressive – a solid eighty-two. That number includes bands such as Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Pagan’s Mind, Circus Maximus, Stratovarius, Riverside, and more. The US is not known for heavy metal festivals – at least not of the level that Europe is known for, with Wacken, Hellfest, and all sorts of other open-airs. In the US, ProgPower is the longest-running and most well-known of the handful of festivals we do have. Moreover, as evidenced by the title, this is a pointedly progressive- and power- metal themed festival, with performances by an average of 14-16 bands over several days.
Last year, I had the privilege of attending the festival and contributed a series of write-ups about each of the days afterwards. The experience was much like a Comic-Con or anime convention, only geared around highly amplified sound aimed at rattling my brain and rocking my soul. It was like another world altogether, given that everyone I interacted with on that three-day stretch could talk for hours on end about the juxtaposition of synthesizer and guitar solos with no reservations. It felt like a family reunion. More...

Tis the season apparently for metal cruises, and I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Spinefeast at Sea cruise from Helsinki, to Tallin last Thursday and Friday! The cruise was organized by Spinefarm Records, and with perfect timing as the label was celebrating its 20th birthday this year.
Here in Finland, these cruises to Tallin, Estonia are known for being somewhat of a booze cruise, and almost every Finn has been on one of these journeys to either Stockholm, Tallin, or St. Petersburg. The tax free alcohol and overall party mood are always a safe bet for a good time and I for one can’t think of a better accompaniment to my inexpensive alcohol consumption then to have a solid 20 hours of metal oriented fun! Aboard the ship, called The Baltic Princess, were opportunities for drinking, dancing, metal karaoke and of course an exciting and diverse lineup of 8 bands. More...
