Every week we check in with bands from across the globe to get their favorite stories from metal shows. This week Insomnium guitarist/vocalist Ville Friman shares the following story of kids in a pit going airborne courtesy of an Olympic hammer thrower:
When I was young, there really wasn’t a pit culture at Finnish live shows. However, mosh pits have become more popular among young people within the past few years - and we even get these once in a while. One thing you often notice from the stage is the size, age, and strength differences between different people. At one of our recent shows in Helsinki, a pit broke loose during “The Killjoy.” After awhile, you could see these small kids starting to fly around from the back of the audience. When I took a more careful look, I could see that Finnish Olympic hammer thrower, Olli-Pekka Karjalainen, had come to see our show and was taking part in the pit by pushing around these small teens. Even though everybody was enjoying the show and having fun, I was pretty glad to be on the safe side of the room.
Insomnium is currently working on the follow-up to "One For Sorrow" (reviewed here), with full details on the new album forthcoming. The band has already posted one single from the forthcoming opus.
Insomnium will release a new digital single on November 19th titled "Ephemeral." The track comes off the band's upcoming, as-yet-untitled new album, which will follows previous full-length "One For Sorrow" (reviewed here).
Today a lyric video for "Ephemeral" has also been released and can be viewed below, courtesy of Metal Hammer. This single marks the first track to feature the band’s new guitarist, Markus Vanhala (also in Omnium Gatherum), who replaced Ville Vänni in 2011.
Before entering the studio to record a new album, Finland’s dark and melodic death metal outfit Insomnium has compiled a making-of documentary of the band's time recording "One For Sorrow" (reviewed here), which was Insomnium's Century Media debut full-length.
Check out the clip below, and fans in Europe can also see the band supporting Children of Bodom this fall. Dates are available after the jump.
Finnish melodic death metallers Insomnium return to North America in October for a tour with Epica, Alestorm, and System Divide. In anticipation of this trek, the band is partnering with AOL Noisecreep to premiere a video for the title track off latest album, "One For Sorrow" (reviewed here).
Watch the video - a live recording from the Wacken Open Air and Tuska Open Air festivals - through Noisecreep or in the player below.
Vocalist/bassist Niilo Sevänen comments: "'One for Sorrow' is one of the best songs Insomnium has ever done. It stands out as a unique kind of track and it clearly deserves a video of its own. It's not your typical melodic death metal song but something else: the essence of the song is not its pace or brutality, but its haunting and melancholic atmosphere. And that mood might be much heavier than any blast-beat onslaught you can create...
"The video for 'One for Sorrow' was filmed at Wacken Open Air and Tuska Open Air this summer. The atmosphere at both these shows was absolutely amazing, and I hope this live video conveys the feeling that we were really enjoying our time on stage...After a busy summer and a short break, it now feels good to get touring again. We've been waiting for five years since our last North American tour and finally we have the chance to keep conquering America. We'll be all around the continent, and it will surely be a great tour for everyone. See you soon!" More...
Premiere pirate metal band and Napalm Records recording artist Alestorm will be setting sail to North American waters once again, touring the United States and Canada this month and next as direct support to Epica.

And then it was Saturday! Day two of Tuska again started a bit earlier then the hungover and tired festival goers may have wished but the drowsy vibes quickly vanished (though not the rain clouds) as the day started on a much folkier note. Tuska Day Two promised another heavy day of good music, good people and the summer vibe that has Finns and Non Finn's coming from all over to partake in the festivities.
First up today was Estonian folk metallers Metsätöll! I have been excited to see these guys for years now and it was with bated breath that I entered the photo pit this morning! And here I will be a bit blasphemous and state that Lauri (Varulven) Õunapuu is quite simply a god of folk instruments. Throughout the set he seamlessly switched from bagpipes, to flutes, and numerous stringed Estonian folk instruments. Each one was expertly played and gave the performance a mysterious lovely quality. The Estonian language is quite obviously similar to Finnish, and in fact singer Markus "Rabapagan" Teeäär wows the predominantly Finnish crowd (and presumably wins their hearts) by speaking to them in Finnish. It needs to be said: his accent is much better than mine. Metsätöll is one of those folk metal bands that clearly love what they do, and though the music is fun and foly as ever, there is a lovely mysterious undertone that lends one’s mind to thinking thoughts of dark forests and legends of old. This year's Summer Breeze festival will be taking place from August 16th - 18th, with full details available at the festival's website here. The organizers of Summer Breeze have now issued the following announcement about confirming new bands:
"Since the release of their amazing breakthrough album 'Inwards', Dew-Scented have been at the forefront of European thrash metal. Since then, the cool bunch led by frontman Leif Jensen have been producing fantastic albums full of unstoppable riff power and overwhelming intensity at nicely regular intervals, cementing the band's excellent reputation time and again. In 2012, Dew-Scented aim at kick-starting their career with an entirely new line-up – with the exception of band boss Leif – and the fantastic new album 'Icarus', and are gearing up to shatter the Summer Breeze Open Air into small pieces. We are stoked to welcome the indestructible machine called Dew-Scented at our festival once more. Get thrashed!
"When Agrypnie played the Summer Breeze festival in 2008 for the first and only time so far, they were booked as consolation for all those who were mourning the recent disbanding of Nocte Obducta. Four years, one studio album and one EP later, the Hessians have made a career for themselves, having now reached the same level as the aforementioned group. Their new studio album is still being recorded as we speak, but their last EP 'Asche' was already an announcement for big things to come in the realm of post black metal. Expressive, multi-faceted, melancholic, dynamic – all these attributes fit Agrypnie like a glove and are underlined by the fact that their songs don't ever become predictable or interchangable. One of the most exciting bands our scene has to offer nowadays."

In regards to the video and an upcoming tour with label-mates Paradise Lost, the band comments: "Our new video 'Regain the Fire' was shot already in last July so it still features our old guitarist Ville Vänni. The video is done by Obscure Entertainment who is responsible for all our videos since 2006. This time we also have a story line amidst the moshing so this is a bit different than previous works. Go and watch the video and judge it yourself!
"We are really excited to hit the UK together with PARADISE LOST. They are one of those bands which we liked already as teens so it really feels strange that we are getting in a same tour bus with them. We haven't toured UK properly since 2009 so it's high time to deliver some goodies for the Britons. So remember, there is no excuse for not showing up!" More...

The Summer Breeze festival organizers have issued the following announcement about confirming Amon Amarth as a headliner for the festival's 2012 edition:
"Behind the 24th door of our Advent Calendar there's none other than our favourite vikings AMON AMARTH, who are now confirmed as the second headliner for the 15th SUMMER BREEZE Open Air beside Subway To Sally.
"It's almost incredible the way our Swedish friends have enjoyed a continued rise to the top of the scene. Top-ten chart entries, headliner slots on all major festivals, sold-out tours, enthusiastic fans everywhere – by now Mr Johan Hegg and Co. have become real stars, but they still have their feet firmly planted on the ground, because they haven't forgotten where they started. And that's why they like to return to those places, one of them definitely being SUMMER BREEZE!
"What, it's Christmas already?!? How time flies. Our SUMMER BREEZE Advent Calendar had only just begun, and now it's all over again. We hope we were able to fulfill your wishes and expectations, and perhaps even surprise you with one or two of the confirmed bands.
"Here's a final overview of our Advent Calendar, which has been making you company for the last 24 days: More...

Finnish melodic death metal band Insomnium announced the departure of guitarist Ville Vänni from the band. Vänni will play farewell shows next week in Joensuu and Helsinki, Finalnd. His replacement will be Markus Vanhala of Omnium Gatherum.
Vänni posted the following statements about his departure: "Time is now ripe to share the news about lineup changes in the Insomnium camp. With a heavy heart I have reached the decision to resign from Insomnium. The decision is mutual and final, and there is no big drama behind it.
"During the last year I have found myself in a limbo of constant lack of time and impossible schedules. Combining a general surgeon’s career with a busy metal band like Insomnium has already taken years of precise timing, and the candle has been burning from both ends for years now.
"At the same time, Insomnium has grown bigger demanding more and more time. As a result, I have gradually come to a painful realization that I cannot meet the needs of this roller coaster ride any more.
"This decision was hard to make and accept for all of us. Insomnium has been like a family and the bandmates have been (and will still remain) my best and closest friends. For not being able to give my 100% would only be letting them down. The reason why this decision is made flesh right now is that I will not be able to attend the One For Sorrow European tour. My wife is due to give birth to our first son and it is my responsibility, duty and choice to be home at that time. I will play two first shows in Finland and then bid farewell.
"However, the burden of this decision is lightened by the fact that Insomnium will go on and even grow stronger after my retirement. Markus Vanhala from Omnium Gatherum will take my place as a full-time guitarist in Insomnium. He is a good friend and an excellent musician and has already been replacing me and Ville F. on several occasions.
"Thank you Niilo, Ville and Markus for a decade of good times and a lifetime of friendship and unforgettable memories. And thank you all Insomnium fans, it is you who made this all possible! See you on the coming shows!" More...
