Just For Fun

Bernie Sanders To Appear In New NYHC Documentary

This was obviously an April Fool's gag. For the full list of our 2016 jokes, head here.

Presidential candidate and senator of Vermont, Bernie Sanders has been confirmed to appear in a documentary movie about the legendary New York Hardcore scene, entitled, "NYHC - A Revolution." The politician, activist and native of Brooklyn, New York, has apparently long had a connection with the music that helped shape the area and the state and claims that some of his political beliefs were shaped by attending shows from the likes of Agnostic Front and Gorilla Biscuits.

"It just all made perfect sense," Sanders says in an excerpt from the film, "if someone falls in the pit, you help them up. Not everyone was six foot and built, most people couldn't get up when they were knocked flat on the floor so they needed a helping hand. I think that's true of life in America today, not everyone can be king of the pit, but we all deserve the opportunity to mosh."

The senator also confirmed last night at his rally in the Bronx, that he will be using "Us Vs Them" by Sick of it All as his campaign song, citing the values the song promoted as central to his message of co-operation and unity among the working class.

"NYHC - A Revolution" will be the full length successor the sequel, "NYHC," which was filmed in 1995 and released four years later and will feature the same director, Frank Pavich, as well as new interviews with previously featured bands like Madball and the recently reactivated Crown of Thornz, plus bands who only appeared in bonus scenes on the DVD edition such as H20 and Sick of it All.

A Second Look At Heavy Metal In Video Games

Two weeks back we asked a simple question: why isn't there more heavy metal in the video game world?

Our Facebook page blew up with gamers offering up their favorite titles with metallic soundtracks, and we took a closer look at several worth your time. In that post still available here if you didn't read it, we looked at the king of heavy metal video games – Brutal Legend – as well as Saint's Row The Third, Killing Floor 2, Painkiller, and Guilty Gear X2 Reload.

After that post went online, Zynthetic – responsible for much of the music in Killing Floor and Killing Floor 2 – wrote up an article attempting to answer the question of why more metal doesn't show up in video games since they seem like a perfect and obvious match.

For his take on the lack of metal in gaming, including the difficulties in licensing existing music and the lack of metallic knowledge among composers, read the full article right here.

Since we love gaming and we love metal, it seemed like a good idea to keep checking in every so often with new entries that combine the two, and this week we'll cover four more solid games filled to the brim with extreme metal. Don't see your favorite game listed? Don't worry, we'll cover more in the future, but be sure to still give us your picks in the comments below.

Five years ago a reboot of the '88 arcade game Splatterhouse hit consoles, and it was very much notable for the inclusion of an all-metal soundtrack featuring the likes of Lamb of God, Mastodon, Municipal Waste, Cavalera Conspiracy, and Goatwhore.

As the name would suggest, it's filled with buckets of blood and guts, and the action-oriented beat 'em up style is somewhat similar to Dante's Inferno/God Of war/etc. The frantic combat will see your character Rick frequently losing limbs and more, but that's not a problem because they grow back – and hey, you can pick up the severed appendages of your foes to continue beating them down!

This one's filled to the brim with all sorts of horror goodies (and ridiculousness) like time travel, cosmic horror deities, and plenty of nods to Lovecraft with names like “Dr. West” and places called “Arkham.” Someone helpfully put all the songs from the soundtrack together into one playlist at YouTube here, and you can check out a game trailer below:

Sick Of It All Posts "Get Bronx" Video

Right before kicking off a South American Tour in Mexico City, NYHC band Sick Of It All premieres brand new video "Get Bronx."

The video was recorded in Europe during the EMP Persistence Tour earlier this year by Dirk Behlau. Check it out below, courtesy of Decibel Magazien. Drummer Armand Majidi commented about the song and video:

"'Get Bronx' is a hard-hitting groove with a message of defiance against the modern powers of oppression. This video serves to show people across the world that as gritty and unpretentious as hardcore music is, it still translates to the big stage and doesn't need a tiny, intimate atmosphere to work. When a big club pulsates like that, the spirit of hardcore is kept alive." More...

Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 2: King Diamond

Austin was buzzing with chatter about King Diamond ever since Fun Fun Fun Fest announced he would be on this year’s bill. This performance marked the end of his “Halloween 2014” tour so many of these fans had followed his shows on You-Tube, social media and in various ‘zines. Friends on social media recalled their experience with KD in Houston and Dallas. His stage set up was no secret as was his sound, but this didn’t make it any less exciting. Watching a You-Tube video is no where near as satisfying as hearing him live in person. One could make a cursory glance through the audience and find fans with black-and-white painted faces, inverted crosses and other symbols worn by the King. More...

Sick Of It All Releases New Video

Sick Of It All released latest album "Last Act Of Defiance" last month, and now the band has released a video for the song "Road Less Traveled." Check out the video below, thanks to New Noise Magazine.

Sick Of It All comments: "We are very excited to premiere the first video from our new album, Last Act Of Defiance. In 'Road Less Traveled,' we talk about our journey in music & life. There's no better way to celebrate this journey than with a bunch of our friends and to shoot a fun video that documents yet another day for us 4 guys being blessed to be part of a great scene. Drew Stone came out of retirement, stepped it up and directed the video, which captured the true essence behind us as a band. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we do! Hardcore is our life!!!"

"It's a real throwback to the golden age of music videos" said Stone. "The video is shot in one take with no camera movement; everything happens right into the camera lens. Sick Of It All is one of the rare hardcore bands who are confident with their place in history and actually have a sense of humor. It was a real honor and pleasure to work with them." More...

Listen to "Get Bronx" below, and the band also comments: "Get Bronzx is a term we came up with and use amongst a group of our friends in the NYHC scene. It is used to describe the point that is passed push coming to shove, when you go all out. Musically the song is a hybrid throwback fusing some early punk type chord changes with a late 80's NYHC style groove. The ending clearly Black Sabbath influenced and well... Geezer rules!"

Sick Of It All Reveals "The Last Act Of Defiance"

After kicking off a European festival tour, New York Hardcore act Sick Of It All also announces today the release ofupcoming album "The Last Act Of Defiance," which is scheduled out September 30th in North America and September 29th in Europe via Century Media.

Asked about what he wants fans to walk away with after hearing "The Last Act Of Defiance" Armand Majidi's (drums) answer is very simple: "I want them to feel that they just heard a hardcore record that has everything, from blistering speed to bouncing groove, to heavy and pounding to bright and melodic."

The eye-catching cover artwork comes from Ernie Parada, who has already designed posters, merchandise, and album art for numerous bands and artists from the punk and hardcore scene such as Hatebreed, Propagandhi, Rancid or The Gaslight Anthem just to mention a few.

"The Last Act Of Defiance" was produced by long time friend and producer Tue Madsen who recorded the album at Nova Studio in Staten Island, NY while mixing it in his own Antfarm Studio in Denmark.

Armand Majidi commented about why Tue Madsen is the perfect match for Sick Of It All: "Not only do we get along famously, but he has always understood how to capture the band's intensity in the quietly controlled, less-than-intense studio setting. It was always difficult for us to find an engineer who could capture our live sound before meeting Tue, so now that we've found him, he's our guy."

The track listing of the album reads as follows:

1. Sound the Alarm
2. 2061
3. Road Less Traveled
4. Get Bronx
5. Part of History
6. Losing War
7. Never Back Down
8. Facing the Abyss
9. Act Your Rage
10. Disconnect Your Flesh
11. Beltway Getaway
12. Sidelined
13. Outgunned

Five-Minute History of Hardcore and Metal Fusion

Beefy funny man, Billy Milano once said “Skinheads and bangers and punks stand as one Crossover to a final scene.” This insight he offered on S.O.D.’s 1985 release “Speak English or Die” would serve as a rallying cry for hardcore punks and metal heads to come together. Not only did this song help create a mindset for bringing together two scenes; it also constructed a formula for the two styles to merge. Known simply as metalcore or crossover, the term came to describe how hardcore bands added metal’s solos and heft to their arrangements, while thrash absorbed the speed, attitude and brevity of hardcore to their compositions.

Milano also claimed “It’s not the way you wear your hair, it’s what’s inside of you.” Even though these words ring true twenty-seven years after publication, and so often we see the two lines blurring together, hair styles have pretty much remained the same (minus poodle hair and mullets). Short hair, often bald or spiky, is still relegated to punks, while long hair is a feature of head bangers. Regardless of attitude and opposition to the mainstream, many punks and metal heads prefer to segregate.

After hearing an inspiring hardcore/crossover album from "The Casualties" and attending festivals such as Fun Fun Fun Fest and Chaos in Tejas that mesh metal and hardcore in the last year, I felt the need to research and write an article on the history of this topic. Through the usual resource of the Internet, Ian Christe’s book “Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal” and a first person source, I hope to shed light on this phenomenon. In the following article, we will look at the interchangeable qualities of punk and metal, as well as delving into each style’s social constraints. We will look at the bands that started this movement and analyze how the art form has evolved. Ready yourself for a crash course on punk-thrash crossover movement. More...
