The first batch of dates are listed below and more will be announced in the coming weeks. The debut Sumerian Records album from Animals As Leaders is targeted for March release and a new track will surface online in late January.
Javier Reyes states: "We are definitely very excited about our upcoming headliner as it's been over two years since we did our last headlining North American tour. I think we have chosen a line-up that consist of extremely talented acts. Our labelmates, After the Burial, are a band we have yet to ever share the same stage with, so we are definitely looking forward to that. Ex-AAL drummer Navene Koperweis is coming out and performing solo and Chon are a very cool band we think people will enjoy.
"However, we are mostly excited about finally playing new material. I think some of the new tracks are some of AAL's strongest and musical material yet, so I am looking forward to seeing the crowd reactions. I am really happy how the album is coming out. Everyone who took part with this album (Misha Mansoor, Adam Getgood, Diego Farias, and Navene Koperweis) is extremely talented and I think we've done a great job of capturing it onto what is now the third Animals As Leaders album. While on tour with his American power trio - The Winery Dogs - Mike Portnoy filmed an epic and personalized invite video to his first ever Progressive Nation at Sea Cruise.
Portnoy takes you band by band and leads you through the musical adventure that attendees have to look forward to at this one of a kind, floating prog festival taking place February 2014. Mike Portnoy had this to say:
"I could not be any prouder or any more excited than I am for Progressive Nation At Sea 2014. It is my ultimate dream lineup ranging from legends like Jon Anderson & Adrian Belew to Prog trailblazers like Spock's Beard & the Flower Kings to today's most extreme cutting edge artists like Devin Townsend and Periphery.
"I am also excited to be playing with Bigelf, PSMS & Transatlantic...the final encore of which will see Transatlantic & Jon Anderson joining forces for a one-time only set of Yes classics! This is going to be a historic experience and the Prog event of the Millennium! You will not want to miss out on this!"
The lineup features Adrian Belew's Power Trio, Devin Townsend Project, King's X, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Pain Of Salvation, Anathema, Riverside, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, The Safety Fire, Tony Harnell & Bumblefoot, Bigelf, Beardfish, The Dear Hunter, Haken, Jolly, Anneke van Giersbergen, Mark Mikel and Next to None. Progressive Nation is hitting the high seas in 2014! The inaugural sailing will occur on February 18th - 22nd 2014 on the luxurious Norwegian Pearl heading from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay and Freeport, Bahamas. The lineup includes:
Transatlantic, Portnoy Sheehan Macalpine Sherinian, Jon Anderson, Adrian Belew's Power Trio, Devin Townsend, King's X, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside, Animals As Leaders, The Safety Fire, Tony Harnell & Bumblefoot, Bigelf, Beardfish, The Dear Hunter, Haken, Jolly And Next To None
Progressive Nation founder Mike Portnoy elaborates:
"In 2008 & 2009, I created a touring package called 'Progressive Nation' and with Dream Theater headlining, we did three full tours (two in North America and one in Europe) that showcased a variety of bands that embraced the spirit and musicality of progressive music.
"Well after a 5 year hiatus, I have decided to resurrect Progressive Nation and this time we are taking it to the seas! But rather than a 4 band bill like previous Progressive Nation tours, we have expanded the bill to OVER A DOZEN of today's greatest progressive bands, musicians and artists! (and there may be one or two more still to be confirmed)
"Myself and my former DT bandmate Derek Sherinian have teamed up with Sixthman (who have done incredibly successful cruises with Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the annual Kiss Cruise to name a few) as well as our friends at InsideOut Music and look forward to a very successful inaugural launch of Progressive Nation at Sea Feb 18th thru 22nd 2014. Guitarist Javier Reyes (Animals As Leaders) has inked a new solo deal with Sumerian Records for his project Mestís, which is an all instrumental effort. Sumerian comments:
"The debut EP, Basal Ganglia, is a five track offering showcasing Reyes' vast musical diversity and features an intriguing variety of instrumentation performed by highly acclaimed musicians. The EP is set for a Nov 27th release and specially priced pre-order bundles will be available in the coming weeks." A teaser trailer for the EP can be found below.
Reyes also states: “Basal Ganglia is an EP that come from several places, and by places, I mean influences. I’ve always wanted to create a style of music that focused on being emotionally exploitive and technically sound, yet simple enough for the average music listener to appreciate. Another influence was using the eight string guitar in a form that is unconventional to the 'trends' or independent of characteristics that are found in music styles/genres that have popularized it. Another and important reason was to create a true form of my own independent voice as an artist. To create music that expressed my personality, upbringing, emotions and musical taste." More...

Animals As Leaders recently issued a statement about the band being robbed and having a car and various gear stolen. Guitarist Tosin Abasi has now issued the following update about the stolen car being recovered with one of the guitars still in the vehicle:
"Hey everyone. We've actually got some good news to report! The LAPD successfully recovered Javier's car. The even better news is that one of the stolen guitars was in the back seat! I'm now reunited with Strandberg #17.
"We want to commend the LAPD for their ability to find the stolen vehicle within 24 hours of receiving the police report.
"Hopefully this is the key to finding the rest of the guitars! Something still may pop up online so please keep your eyes open. Thanks for all of the support. We love you all."

Update: The band has since recovered the stolen vehicle and one of the guitars.
Animals as Leaders has checked in with the following announcement about having guitars and other equipment stolen:
"Hey guys. We've got some pretty terrible news to report. Upon returning home to our house in LA we discovered that we'd been robbed while were out on tour. The thieves were able to get away with Javier's Chevy Blazer and all of the equipment we didn't have on tour with us. 10 guitars in total. This includes many of our one of a kind custom instruments (Stranberg, Rick Toone ) as well as amplifiers, PA equipment and personal items.
"This is beyond devastating. We know so many of you have been beyond supportive with Javier's legal troubles. We may need more of your help now to potentially find some of these one of a kind instruments that may pop up on Ebay, Craigslist, pawn shops, used music stores etc.
"We're adding an album containing photos and detailed descriptions of the stolen gear to our profile. Please take a look and keep your eyes open for anything that looks close to this stuff. I truly think that with your help we have an exponentially better chance of tracking some of this down.
"If anyone has any information about any of this gear, please contact us at email@example.com. Please, keep it to messages containing leads on the stolen gear. Thanks!"
Animals As Leaders was forced to miss their show in Toronto the other day when guitarist Javier Reyes had to return to Boston for a court date after being arrested. Eye witnesses say that he was assaulted by a police officer for filming an arrest they were making before being arrested and charged with assaulting an officer himself. Here's the update from Javier:
Javier Reyes here. I would like to personally apologize for canceling the Toronto show last night. I can explain. After the Boston show on May 26th, I was unlawfully arrested by the Boston Police Department. I had to return to Boston on May 30th for court. As much as we had looked forward to playing Toronto again, there was nothing I could do other than cancel the show and return to Boston to avoid having an arrest warrant filed against me.
I have included a complaint letter a friend/witness has written and sent to the Boston Police. It explains in more detail about the appalling and absurd encounter that occurred that evening. Again, to all our fans in Toronto, I am truly sorry for cancelling the show.
MetalSucks claims that arresting officer Rance Cooley has a history of using excessive force, abusing his power as an officer of the law, and lying to get convictions.
Instrumental pioneers Animals As Leaders have posted a trailer for their new video for “Weightless,” the title track from their 2011 album, which debuted at #92 on the Billboard Top 200 last fall. Alternative Press is hosting an exclusive premiere of the video at this location.

Progressive instrumental pioneers Animals As Leaders -- whose sophomore album, "Weightless," cracked the Billboard Top 100 last fall -- return to the road this weekend, when they will kick off their first European headlining tour in Tilburg, Holland on April 1st. Their headlining dates will surround a week's worth of U.K. shows alongside Meshuggah, a band AAL mastermind Tosin Abasi cites as a major influence. Immediately after returning from Europe, Animals As Leaders will embark on its first North American tour of the year to support Thrice on that group's farewell tour. A complete list of dates is available below.
These upcoming shows will not include Navene Koperweis, who has decided to leave the group. Says Koperweis, "Tosin and Javier (Reyes, guitar) are the two most generous, caring and understanding individuals I've ever met and I look forward to a lifetime of friendship with the both of them. Over the past decade I have done nothing but music. Recording, writing, playing, practicing, touring and producing. It's taken me beyond what I could have dreamt of as a kid when I started. My new goals extend beyond the drum kit and I'm the type of person who will constantly chase new dreams. You'll be seeing a lot more of me soon."
Abasi says, "I've shared some of my most memorable musical experiences to date with Navene and truly consider him a brother. I commend him for following his own path in life, even if that means i'll no longer be sharing the stage with him. I feel blessed to have had the pleasure of working together and creating a lifelong friendship."
Filling in for Koperweis on Animals As Leaders' European and North American tours will be the Boston-based Matt Garstka, a Berklee alumnus who has previously played with the groups Gokh Bi System, Two Man Trio and Verse The Fire. Some video footage of Garstka can be viewed here.
"We see nothing but great potential with Matt, and look forward to performing with him on the upcoming tours," Abasi says. "We feel very excited for the future of AAL, which is brighter than ever. I'm beyond excited for our fans to hear some of the new music we already have brewing for the future!" More...
