Throughout the history of the Sunday Old School, we’ve looked at a number of undervalued bands formed by musicians from more famous bands. Be it the recent article of Fastway, formed by Motorhead guitarist,"Fast" Eddie Clarke, the collaboration between former Sepultura/Soulfly frontman, Max Cavalera with Fudge Tunnel’s, Alex Newport on Nailbomb, or Rob Halford’s endeavours with Fight and Two. This week, Sunday Old School will continue this by taking a gander at what drummer Dave Lombardo got up to shortly after leaving Slayer for the second time.
After taking his leave from the thrash giants, Lombardo put together a new outfit with Polish guitarist, Waldemar Sorychta, a former member of the German thrash metal group, Despair. They took their influence from the groove metal style which had been popularised by Pantera and christened their new outfit, Grip Inc., being joined in their musical pursuit by British vocalist, Gus Chambers, a former member of punk band, The Squad, and bass player, Jason Viebrooks. This new quartet didn’t take long to attract interest from record companies and before long, they signed with German label, SPV. More...

RESPONSE NEGATIVE, the Florida-based death/thrash metal act featuring former OVERKILL/GRIP INC. guitarist Bobby Gustafson, have officially called it a day. "Lack of professionalism and drive from within the band and a lack of label interest prompted the split," according to Gustafson. Look for Bobby and former RESPONSE NEGATIVE frontman Nick Barlow to launch a new project during the coming months.
In his first interview in nearly 4 years, GRIP INC. vocalist GUS CHAMBERS spoke with Electricbasement.com Friday morning from Germany, recording segments for the POWER HOUR NET RADIO SHOW, which is World Premiering the band's new album, Incorporated , beginning March 1st. Chambers, whose bandmates include guitarist/keyboardist WALDEMAR SORYCHTA and drummer DAVE LOMBARDO, candidly explained why the band took nearly 5 years to issue a follow-up to Solidify , "To cut a long story short...the band, in 1999, nearly broke up. There were certain things as a musician that I needed to clarify with myself and Grip Inc. to go forward. There was a lot of fighting. Record sales were down. There was a lot of pressure from the record company to join a trend and being Grip Inc, we refused to do that."
Regarding the new album, he emphasizes the difference in the band's approach this time around. "We wanted to make this a special album. We wanted to make as cohesive album as possible...not relying on the speed of Dave [Lombardo] or the guitar wizardry of Waldemar [Soyrchta]. I personally wanted to make this album as a Grip Inc. album." While he thinks the first band's debut, The Power Of Inner Strength, was very much a group effort, the follow-ups, Nemesis and Solidify, became the "Dave and Waldemar show." While he admits they are "great albums," he felt the group "was capable of doing a lot more and delving into more diversity of styles and becoming more accessible as a band." Their latest, Incorporated, drops March 9th via SPV. Hear more of the interview on the Power Hour starting Monday, where it can be streamed on demand for free for 4 weeks.
