The Final Day Of Brutal Assault 2024? Perfection.

After the 10-band marathon from the previous day, today’s manageable list of 7 bands felt more like a five-kilometer race in terms of running from stage to stage. It was sunny and noticeably warmer than all the previous days. The soggy weather that the festival began with was now a distant memory. There was a different energy in the air today due to the ideal outdoor festival conditions. The final day of Brutal Assault 2024 already had the feeling that it was going to be a memorable one for the Brutal Assault archives.

The first band of the afternoon was technical Death Metal legends, Pestilence. I haven’t seen them since Martin Van Drunen left the band and if you’re doing the math, that’s a really fucking long time ago. I tried listening to “Testimony of the Ancients” post Martin leaving, but the brutality that the previous albums had was non-existent. I didn’t like it and basically wrote them off after that. During today’s set, Pestilence played Dehydrated from my favorite album “Consuming Impulse,” but I just couldn’t get into it. The vocals were weak and forced. Martin Van Drunen was Pestilence. I’ll just stick to Asphyx from here on out.

I was excited to finally see Sadus, another legendary Thrash Metal band from the Bay Area. Brutal Assault was chock full of them this year. Sadus is another band that has been around forever and it took a festival in Europe for me to finally see them. I noticed that one of the guitarists was Claudeous Creamer from the current Possessed line-up. It’s nice to see Bay Area Thrash bands helping each other out by lending members for tours and shows. After my 3-song photo set, I’d be lying if I said they were anything more than “just good” live. The crowd was into it though, and that’s all that probably mattered to Sadus.

Darren Travis of Sadus

In general, I’m a huge fan of Polish Black Metal and that doesn’t translate to just Behemoth. Poland has a treasure trove of Black Metal bands and my next band, Totenmesse, is one of those that deserves your attention. I missed their set due to a scheduling conflicts at Mystic Festival a couple of months prior, but I was able to right that wrong today.

Totenmesse

Piotr Wujkowiecki of Totenmesse

There was already a decent sized crowd waiting at the claustrophobia inducing Octagon Stage for Totenmesse when I arrived. By the time they started, you could no longer maneuver freely through the crowd without spilling beers and getting swaths of other people’s sweat on you. Overall, I really enjoyed their set. Their vocalist, Piotr Wujkowiecki, is the visual focus for the band. He makes these faces that you don’t know if he’s getting ready to stab you in the face or vomit on you. If you don’t believe me, just check out this video from their set here. More...

Sadus To Release First Album In Sixteen Years

East Bay thrash metal legends Sadus will make their long-awaited return this autumn for the release of their first album in 16 years, "The Shadow Inside," on November 17th via Nuclear Blast Records. Reunited in 2017, the band spent the last several years writing the record at their own pace, impervious to outside trends and influences, and recently finished recording with Juan Urteaga (Exodus, Testament, Machine Head) at Trident Studios.

Featuring ominous artwork by accomplished artist Travis Smith (Fleshgod Apocalypse, Opeth), "The Shadow Inside," is a contemporary thrash classic with colossal, groove-laden riffs at break-neck rhythm and blistering solos. It’s the record fans have been waiting desperately for and one of the year’s most crucial metal albums.

Commenting on the record’s impending release, founding vocalist/guitarist Darren Travis says:

Sadus Signs With Nuclear Blast Records

Thrash metal legends Sadus has officially joined the Nuclear Blast Records family. Led by founding vocalist/guitarist Darren Travis and drummer Jon Allen, the band is armed with a resurgent arsenal of massive riffs and blistering solos, crushing drums and shredding bass, and are currently preparing for the release of their first new album in 16 years, due out 2023.

Commenting on the signing, Nuclear Blast's A&R veteran Monte Conner states:
"I am thrilled to be reunited with Darren Travis and the mighty Sadus. Signing a band I have worked with in the past is never a given. Quite the opposite, in fact. I need to be blown away, and let me tell you, this new Sadus material is some of the best work I have ever heard from the band. It is the Sadus you know and love, with the same elements that made them unique in the past, but now with even stronger, more focused songs, and with crushingly heavy modern production!"

With the signing comes Sadus' ferocious new single, "It's The Sickness." The first taste of their impending record is a contemporary thrash classic with colossal, groove-laden riffs, made to get the pit moving.

Says Sadus' Darren Travis, when asked to discuss the new track:
"As Joe Perry from Aerosmith says... ‘Let the music do the talking!'" More...

1985-1995: The Golden Age of Death Metal

Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.

Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

Sunday Old School: Sadus

When it comes to naming some of music’s best bassists, who is it you think of? Bootsy Collins of Parliament-Funkadelic? Norman Watt-Roy of The Blockheads? The unsung legends such as James Jamerson? Personally, at least when it comes to metal, I believe it’s very hard to find a better bass player than Steve DiGiorgio, who first made his name with the thrash metal outfit Sadus.

Sadus was formed in Antioch, California in 1984 by DiGiorgio, vocalist Darren Travis, drummer Jon Allen and guitarist, Rob Moore, but was unable to record a demo tape until 1986, which came in the form of “D.T.P. (Death to Posers.)” Two tracks from the demo made their way to the Raging Death compilation album and with popularity steadily increasing, the group decided to self-finance a full length album, “Illusions,” with Metal Church guitarist John Marshall handling production duties.

The album found enough success underground to catch the attention of several record labels, with Roadrunner eventually being the company that snapped Sadus up. By 1990, the band had released second full length record, “Swallowed in Black,” which was able to break into the top fifty in Poland. Sadus expanded its profile further still by teaming up with Brazilian thrashers Sepultura and American death metal act Obituary for a tour of North America. The band followed this with the release of a third album, “A Vision of Misery,” in 1992. More...

Steve DiGiorgio To Join Obscura On Tour

Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, ex-Death/ex-Testament) will join German progressive death metal act Obscura on their upcoming Japanese tour alongside Nile and Triptykon. Vocalist Steffen Kummerer commented on the tour situation:

"During scheduling conflicts with Pestilence, Jeroen Paul Thesseling is not able to join us on the trip through the land of the rising sun. Fortunately our friend Steve DiGiorgio will help us out and plays these special shows with Obscura. With that said, I will clear that Jeroen is not leaving our band nor is a session player. We will record the third album with the same lineup as with Cosmogenesis in 2008 and start a huge world wide touring schedule with Jeroen on our side on all shows when the yet untitled third album will be released."

Sepultura, Obituary And Sadus To Tour Together?

John Tardy, the lead vocalist of legendary American death metal group Obituary has checked in with a road report from Europe. It reads as follows:

"That was a busy few days there to finish this run out! Not much sleep happening, a lot of travel, but some really good shows. Thanks to all of you that came out to see us! We finished out in Spain at a great festival in Lorca. It was a good show and great to see our good friends in SEPULTURA. It had been a while since we saw them and they want us to put the S.O.S. Tour back together. Sepultura, Obituary, SADUS...that sounds fun to me. We will see what happens.

"Next up for us, we will be headed to Portugal for a festival and our first trip there! After that we start our US tour and we are looking forward to that!

"I will go through all my photos and get them up here in the next day or two as soon as I get my self together and try to get caught up with all the fan email. I did not have internet for the last few days so I am falling behind, but I will get to them as soon as I can!"
