Latest Misery Index News
Below is our complete Misery Index news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
Relapse Records has announced the signing of MISERY INDEX. MISERY INDEX is currently recording their as-yet-untitled Relapse debut full-length in Atlanta, GA with producer/engineer Eyal Levi. Some early track titles include "Conquistadores", "Outsourcing Jehovah", "Breathing Pestilence", "Dystopian Nightmares" and "Meet Reality". A May 2006 release is expected.
The Baltimore-based quartet is comprised of founder Jason Netherton (Bass/Vocals/Lyrics), John 'Sparky' Voyles (Guitar), Adam Jarvis (Drummer) and Mark Kloeppel (Guitarist). The band's energetic and articulate music has been pushing the boundaries of metal, hardcore and punk since the its’ spring 2001 inception.
MISERY INDEX has previously released the critically-acclaimed full-length 'Retaliate' via Nuclear Blast/EMI Records as well as several independent releases through their own Anarchos record imprint.
COVENANCE, the new band featuring former MISERY INDEX members Matt Byers (drums) and Bruce Greig (also ex-DYING FETUS), have parted ways with vocalist Vince Matthews (ex-DYING FETUS) due to "professional differences." His replacement in the group is none other than former CRYPTOPSY frontman Martin Lacroix. Martin will make his recording debut with the band in April when the band are scheduled to begin work on a new CD, to be followed by extensive touring.
Formed in March 2005, COVENANCE's first demo was remastered by Erik Rutan (HATE ETERNAL, MORBID ANGEL) and released as the "Ravaging The Pristine" CD (TCI) and 7" (Emetic Records).
Montreal's Neuraxis have announced the departure of guitarist and founding member, Steven Henry. The move is the result of "personal and musical differences," though the band emphatically states that the split is amicable. The group will continue as a 4-piece with intentions to recruit a live session guitarist for their upcoming tours. For his part, Henry has released the following statement:
"After 13 years as guitarist and founder of Neuraxis, I decided to take a different path. It's simple, the flame of playing Neuraxis is extinct, and gone are the motivation and taste for it. These things happen, especially when I did not expect the band to go as far as it has gone up to now, so it would be ridiculous for me to slow Neuraxis down. I don't want to be a burden, what I want is the band to grow bigger and I don't think I'm part of that equation. I definitely need a break and Neuraxis cannot afford to lose its time waiting for me. There are way too many good things ahead for the band, and I do not worry at all that Neuraxis will do great without me. I wish nothing but the best for the guys, and also that they'll find another talented and dedicated guitar player. I want to thank the guys for their time, friendship and passion for music. I wish them the best! As for me, I'll keep going with my 3 projects: Urban Aliens, Idiopathetics and Empathy Denied."
Meanwhile, Neuraxis have revealed plans to tour Japan in March with Misery Index. The following dates have been confirmed:
3/11 Yotsuya, Tokyo @ Outbreak w/ Woundeep, Defiled, Mad Butcher ABC
3/12 Shibuya, Tokyo @ Cyclone w/ Woundeep, Disconformity, Loyal To The Grave, At One Stroke, Enzweck
Baltimore's Misery Index have just posted the new track "Conquistadores" on their MySpace page. The song will appear on an upcoming split 7" with Japan's Bathtub Shitter, to be released in early 2006 on Emetic Records. Misery Index will be heading to Atlanta in mid-January to record their second full-length, due out in May 2006 (label to be determined).
In addition, the band has lined up the following shows over the next couple of months:
12/16 Baltimore, MD @ Jerkstore
1/6 Virginia Beach, VA @ Sweet Caroline's
1/7 Newport News, VA @ Buddah's
1/13 Baltimore, MD @ Mojo Room
2/5 Baltimore, MD @ Ottobar w/ Soilent Green, Decapitated
2/7 Hagerstown, MD @ Leitersburg Hall w/ Soilent Green, Decapitated

ALL WILL FALL are currently working on their debut album, tentatively due in early 2006.
Baltimore's MISERY INDEX have posted the following message on their official website:
"Thanks to all those we met in Germany and Belgium last week at the fests, it was a great time and cheers for the support....First, we have split on good terms with Nuclear Blast Records, we wish them and all the good people there the best. Popular metal/hardcore band 7 Angels 7 Plagues, who broke up in 2002 before members went on to form Misery Signals, have confirmed plans for several reunion shows. Bassist Kyle Johnson contacted Lambgoat and provided the following information:
"Some of you may been hearing rumors going around that 7 Angels 7 Plagues will be joining up for a few reunion dates. Well, 7A will in fact be doing a few reunion shows! Its official. Please stay tuned for details. All I can tell you right now is that the shows will most likely take place in December. There will be a show or two in Milwaukee and in another location which will be announced at a later date."
COVENANCE, the new band formed by ex-DYING FETUS singer Vince Matthews and former MISERY INDEX members Matt Byers (drums) and Bruce Greig (also ex-DYING FETUS), have uploaded their entire April 2005 three-song demo to their MySpace.com page. The tracks available for download are as follows: "Narcotic", "Ravaging the Pristine" and "Assimilate".
The group, whose sound is being described as "melodic, brutal death metal" and unlike that of either DYING FETUS or MISERY INDEX, will soon launch their official web site, www.covenance.com.

COVENANCE is the name of a brand-new band formed by ex-DYING FETUS singer Vince Matthews and former MISERY INDEX members Matt Byers (drums) and Bruce Greig (also ex-DYING FETUS). The group, whose sound is being described as "melodic, brutal death metal" and unlike that of either DYING FETUS or MISERY INDEX, have just completed work on their first demo. An official web site, covenance.com, will contain additional information regarding the band's touring plans.
Misery Index have apparently been dropped from the upcoming Deicide, Immolation, Skinless, and With Passion tour, which is scheduled to kick off in late-May. According to the band, they've "summarily booted" from the tour "due to persistent issues and problems over the last few months with the booking agent." Instead, look for Misery Index on the road in the Northeast with Magrudergrind and Rotten Sound in late-May.
IMMOLATION will be touring as direct support to Deicide on their tour in late May/June. Immolation will be touring in support of their latest album, Harnessing Ruin, which features the recording debut of drummer Steve Shalaty, and the band’s most crushing yet clear production to date, compliments of longtime producer Paul Orofino. When asked about the tour and the release of the group's latest masterpiece, Harnessing Ruin, the band could hardly hide their enthusiasm.
"We are really excited about the release of Harnessing Ruin. It is the darkest, heaviest and most emotionally charged album we have ever done!! We are also really looking forward to the upcoming tour with Deicide. Together, along with Skinless, Misery Index, and With Passion, we are all going to crush the US and Canada!!! For us this will be our most extensive run through Canada, so we are really interested in checking out the mid western areas that we have not been able to hit in the past! Prepare for one of the most devastating tours of the year!"

Hypocrisy, Mnemic and Misery Index are the latest confirmations for the Up From The Ground festival, set to be held August 26-27 in Gemünden/Steinwiesen, Germany.
The festival billing is now shaping up as follows:
End of Green
Heaven Shall Burn
My Darkest Hate
Path of Golconda
It turns out that The Palladium in Worcester, MA has a hidden gem that has somehow eluded my attention before. "Upstairs" is a 350- capacity room with atmosphere and sound that "downstairs" comes close to but fails to top. I'm not sure if it was the size of the venue or the fans, or maybe both, but this show felt so much... intimate and heartfelt. The bands too felt these emotions floating in the air and responded accordingly. It was one of those nights when you get this awe-inspiring feeling that you belong to the metal community. More...

Birmingham's fathers of grindcore, Napalm Death, kickoff their 36-date North American tour tonight with their headlining show in Toronto, Canada. The first eight dates the band performs with Misery Index, and the remaining dates take the band across the U.S. with Cannibal Corpse, Kataklysm, and Goatwhore.
Always outspoken about politics, Napalm Death vocalist Barney Greenway had this to say about the elections:
If Bush gets voted in for another term, people really need to take a long, hard look at themselves. With Bush back in power, there'll be more unjustified military intervention, more shitty healthcare provisions for the poor, a country mired further in religious dogma etc. Not to mention seeing more of Jeb Bush's fat head on TV. On the other hand, the Democrats don't offer a real alternative. They're very close to the Republicans on a few issues, which is disappointing. I noted how some of the anti-war advocates in the Democratic Party were silenced quite early on. The crazy thing is that voting for the Green Party guy Ralph Nader is considered a pointless exercise, where as he is one of the only people to offer radical thinking. Based purely on his thoughts, I would probably go for Nader if I was an American.
That said, I think the whole system needs an overhaul. That whole 'vote-rig' thing by the Republicans in Florida last time was such a farce, people outside of the U.S. just could not believe that Americans would let something like that pass. I find it really amusing that the Republicans cast themselves as pillars of honesty when everything they do is steeped in corruption and self-interest. Similarly, I lived through Thatcher's ruthless conservatism in Britain, and I would not want to go through it again.
Napalm Death released their Century Media debut, "Leaders Not Followers: Part 2" on October 5.
