Ensiferum Announces New Album "One Man Army"

Finnish folk/viking metal act and recent Metal Blade Records signees, Ensiferum, will unleash their sixth studio album this winter. Entitled "One Man Army," the predominantly analog-recorded offering was tracked between September and November of this year with award-winning producer Anssi Kippo (Children Of Bodom, Impaled Nazarene, Entwine etc.) at Astia-studio in Lappeenranta, Finland.

Elaborates Ensiferum bassist/vocalist Sami Hinkka of the sessions: "Recording process was long, hard, rewarding and full of incredible moments. Instruments were actually played and left as they were instead of creating tracks from hundreds of different takes, moving them to the grid and modifying things. Of course computers were used but overall we made everything as analog as possible. Listeners can experience a better sound and natural groove, something that we think most metal albums lack these days. Overall, the album sounds much more like a band playing live rather than ‘midi-metal.’"

Ensiferum's "One Man Army" serves as the follow-up to 2012’s lauded "Unsung Heroes" full-length and boasts the stunningly detailed, mythological cover craftings of renowned illustrator Gyula Havancsák (Annihilator, Týr, Elvenking, Stratovarius etc) (shown below).

"On the new album, we took many things musically to the next level so we decided also to try something new graphics-wise," relays Hinkka. "Gyula Havancsák who did phenomenal job! For the first time it was really nice to be more involved with designing the cover and all details. Our humble gratitude to Gyula for all the patience and really amazing results. We couldn't be more satisfied!"

As a precursor to the release, today Ensiferum is pleased to unleash the fittingly-titled "Warmetal" for public consumption. Composed by Demonos Sova of Finnish black metal unit, Barathrum, the track is currently available on the covermount CD of the current issue of Germany’s Legacy - The Voice From The Dark Side and is streaming in all its battle-ready glory at this location. Ensiferum Finishes Work On New Album

Ensiferum has completed work on upcoming new album, "One Man Army." The band spent the last few weeks at Astia Studio in Lappeenranta in Finland with producer Anssi Kippo.

The album is scheduled for release on February 24 in North America, and February 23rd/20th in UK/Europe. New music, cover artwork, track listing, and video clips from the studio will be online within the next few weeks.

Next week, Ensiferum will be filming a brand new music video with Grupa #13 in Poland. Grupa #13 is the production house behind some of the most spectacular music videos in metal, including videos from Behemoth, Amon Amarth, and more.

Vocalist/guitarist Petri Lindroos comments, "We worked hard and long days one after another while Kippo kicked our asses to make us do the very best, and you can hear that in this album. It's a killer album with killer sound. I'm very proud to a part of this masterpiece!"

Bassist Sami Hinkka adds: "Hi folks! We are extremely proud to announce that the album is 100% done! The recording session was incredible experience for us. We can't express our gratitude enough for Mr. Anssi Kippo, who never lost his nerves, was full of crazy ideas and worked like a madman for weeks! The shortest working day was 12 hours and the average was around 16 hours! After all 'blood, sweat and tears' it feels great to tell you that the result for years of hard composing and weeks of intense recordings is without a doubt the best Ensiferum album song- and soundwise. Material is pretty diverse and each song tells a tale of it's own instead of being a crappy copy of previous song so no fillers included. Next week we go record the new music video, but that's another story… Stay tuned!"

Ensiferum will be on tour this autumn and already has shows and festival appearances confirmed for next year. Currently announced dates are as follows: More...

Ensiferum Recording New Album

Ensiferum has completed the writing process for an upcoming new album and Metal Blade Records debut.

With pre-production out of the way, the band is prepared to begin recording. Work will begin on September 8th at Astia Studio in Lappeenranta in Finland with producer Anssi Kippo. Fans can expect to hear new music at the beginning of January, 2015.

Bassist Sami Hinkka offers the following update: "Hi folks! Only a couple more weeks to go! We head to Astia Studio on 8th of September and recordings will take around five weeks.

"We had really good and creative pre production sessions with Anssi Kippo so now we are very well prepared to give 110% on each take in the studio. Because the songs were almost ready when we made the demo versions of them, Mr. Mikko Mustonen is already arranging orchestrations on top of those. Gotta love technology!

"There are still few minor details to arrange and couple of lines of lyrics to twist and turn but nothing can stop us anymore! We are convinced that this will be ground breaking album for us and the whole genre. (Modesty? What's that?)"

The album is tentatively scheduled for release worldwide on Metal Blade Records in early 2015. You can also catch the band live:

Roundtrip To Hel, Part I

THURSDAY, 6/27 - 13:30

“Tuska?”

Unmistakable, husky German accent behind me. I glance over my shoulder, turn, step aside the river of disembarking passengers from the Lufthansa Airbus parked out in the drizzly gray. The veteran green-fatigue-jacketed metalhead, balding, sporting a life-without-parole graying goatee, sticks out his hand.

“Holger. Nuclear Blast.” We shake, he grins and nods at the Testament logo above my lapel, only partially obscured by my boarding pass. He slips me a company card - “Holger Tiefenbach, Distribution & Marketing” - and lifts a finger toward a sign down the corridor: “Matkatavarat.” Luggage.

As we stride through Finland’s Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, locate the carousel for Flight 848 from Frankfurt, and wait for our suitcases to materialize - I was forced to check mine at the last minute and have since developed acute missing-luggage paranoia - Holger brings me up to speed on our shared reason for being here: Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, sixteen years running, 2014 edition set to kick off tomorrow afternoon.

“It used to be held in Kaisaniemi Park, right in the middle of the city. It was the greatest. You’d show up, basically have an afternoon at the park, and then head straight to the bars nearby, when the sun was just barely set.” He seems to almost sigh while tossing off a plaintive, what-are-you-gonna-do shrug. “They moved the location three, four years ago.”

“So it’s not as much fun now?” I want to get my finger on the pulse of conventional wisdom.

He’s quick to clarify. “It’s still awesome. The new location just took some getting used to.” On our painless stroll through the open doorway that passes for an immigration barrier - the stamps and stern looks and “papers, please” stuff was handled back in Germany, natch - Holger gives an inside view of current happenings back at the Nuclear Blast bunker.

“We spent a lot of time promoting that Tuomas Holopainen solo album - the one about Scrooge McDuck,” he tells me. I haven’t heard it, and ask him how it is. “Not metal. That’s how it is,” he chuckles. “But cool if you’re into that wacky stuff, like the last Nightwish album.

“And we signed Slayer!” He clenches a victorious fist like a kid receiving his BB gun on Christmas. “Finally.”

We’ve reached the Arrivals lobby, and a leather-jacketed brunette gives a wave. Rachel Roth (WandererOfKalevala), Metalunderground.com photographer and correspondent, currently residing in Vantaa. We have a bus to catch, and before parting ways with Holger, I bum a cigarette, pocketing the e-cig I’ve been abusing for two months.

I make a half-hearted promise to myself not to do this too much during Tuska (and not to beat myself up for doing just that). Rationalization is still the great human sport. More...
