Ensiferum, Turisas and Thaurorod at The Circus!

It was to be a more eventful Easter Sunday then most, as instead of the awkward family dinners and drinking binges at a dive bar, I was looking forward to spending an epic evening at The Circus in Helsinki for Ensiferum, Turisas and Thaurorod. There would from that moment on be only small amounts of the required holiday binge drinking at a respectable venue, and in well supplied company!

Though much of the city was quiet, even a half hour before the sold out show was to be played there was a line well outside of the club area, and extending into the square. Red and Black facepaint, and warrior costumes were the attire of the night, it was easy to feel underdressed in a sea of war paint and leather. Drinking horns were clipped to belts and kilts (ie acceptable man skirts), as the Vikings of the city came out to pay tribute to their heroes.

There had been a late announcement only hours before the show that Petri Lindroos was having some painful issues with his hand, and would not be playing guitar that evening. Luckily the day was saved by Jukka Pekka Miettinen (Jukkis) (ex-Ensiferum, ex-Turisas, ex-ArthemesiA) and the sold out show would still occur as scheduled. More...

From Dicks To Chicks

When a very attractive, scantily clad young woman claims she loves metal, get a second opinion.

Yeah, I said that.

And I’m not claiming you’re all fakes, female metal fans. I know you’re out there. Most of us can personally attest to that. I’m talking about the posturing selfie types.

You know the ones. They lurk online, Facebooking, Tweeting, posing in metal-looking gear with an Impaled Nazarene logo prominently displayed, skin showing, pouty siren’s call etched across the face.

Sometimes they actually go to the lengths of posting music videos, and when they go there, they go big. “ROOOOTS, BLOODY ROOOOTS <3 METALCHICK FOR LIFE <3 DEATH TO ALL BUT METAL” and so on. Methinks the ladies doth protest too much.

With a few exceptions, these girls do this for one primary reason: they know how to attract men via the path of least resistance. Make that ZERO resistance. Metal is an overwhelmingly male-dominated genre, fostering a “homoerotic relationship between bands and their fans,” as former Sepultura merchbabe Marta Svetek puts it.

So when such a photo goes up, the hungry dogs swarm for their scraps, as it were. You don’t even need to read the Tolstoy-length comment thread to guess its simple pig-swooning gist. How could some girls resist?

A female musician I spoke with, who wishes to remain anonymous (more on that later), recalled of playing with her former metal band:

“Crowds of girls would come into the club between sets and prey on all the guys, then go outside for nearly the band’s entire set, probably blasting Miley or One Direction in their earbuds. I actually remember talking to some girl about a band whose T-shirt she was wearing. She said, ‘Oh, this band? I just thought the shirt was cute.’”

This tactic has suckered many a metalhead, and many enterprising folks have seized on it. Why else would countless popular metal sites and blogs hire “spokesmodels” to push their merchandise? Why else would niche custom fashion lines like Toxic Vision gain such a mammoth following? Why else would 70,000 Tons Of Metal hire “pool girls?”

Why, in other words, does metal culture virtually have to IMPORT hot women like Julius Caesar providing for the appetites of his legions?

Simple: because metalheads (i.e., dudes) like to stare at girls’ tits and asses, and some girls, spurred on by the “hot groupie fantasy,” (in Svetek’s words) like to provide such sights. Capitalism, baby.

I’m not saying I’m above all this, and I’m not exactly judging the arrangement. I believe in the free market. However, I don’t have to embrace everything the market produces, and one very dubious aspect of this Budweiser-ad approach in metal is when it manifests in the music itself. More...

Ensiferum Keyboardist To Miss Upcoming Shows

Ensiferum just recently returned to the stage after Markus Toivonen experienced a health issue, and now the band has issued the following update about keyboardist Emmi Silvennionen missing upcoming shows:

"Unfortunately, it will not be possible for Emmi Silvennoinen (keyboards) to perform on the South American tour starting next week due to personal reasons.

"The shows will go ahead as planned and the band will perform with Emmi's parts as backing tracks, so you needn't worry about the shows missing the signature Ensiferum melodies! We'd like to assure you that everything is fine within the band - Emmi is healthy and this is just for this tour because of circumstances beyond her control. She will be performing at future Ensiferum shows.

"We hope to see as many of you as possible at the shows and look forward to playing in South America for the first time!"

Ensiferum Returning To The Stage

Ensiferum had previously been forced to cancel several shows due to Markus Toivonen's health issues preventing him from flying. He has now checked in with the following update about returning to the stage:

"I just want to give some update for all of our fans about my health issue. My right ear has been a bit better since last week. Last week, I had hearing tests again and I met with the ear doctor. My hearing is a bit better now and the middle ear is completely recovered.

"There is still something going on in my inner ear, but the doctor's opinion is that it should recover and I am able to fly again. So Ensiferum will be back on road this weekend, starting with the Rock Hard Festival (Gelsenkirchen, Germany). See you soon!"

Ensiferum To Miss Upcoming Show

After canceling the band's appearance at Hexentanz, Markus Toivonen of Ensiferum has now checked in with the following update about missing the Headbangers Weekend:

"Unfortunately Ensiferum have been forced to cancel the show at Headbangers Weekend in Istanbul 5.5.2013, because of my medical condition. My right ear has been blocked and I've been half deaf for nine days now. There is also constant buzzing/noise.

"The whole issue began around 10 days ago, whilst flying back home from our North-American tour. During these nine days I met four different doctors and I've been having hearing tests. Until this point, they had given me hope that my ear would be fine before this upcoming show in Istanbul, but unfortunately it has not recovered.

"Today I met with a second ear doctor who told me that I cannot fly because of the pressure. It seems that the problem is in the inside of the ear. There was also infection in the middle of the ear, which has cleared up since. More tests (including x-rays) will follow next week.

"This cancellation is nothing to do with the promoter. They did everything 100% correct (including payments and booking flights). This is strictly about my medical condition. We were forced to cancel one show last Sunday in Germany (Hexentanz festival) as well because of the same issue.

"We really hope to get another chance to perform in Turkey soon and I am very sorry about this unexpected cancellation."

Ensiferum Signs With Metal Blade

Metal Blade Records has checked in with the following announcement about inking a deal with Ensniferum:

"Finland's Ensiferum has spent the past 18 years honing the steel of their folk-infused battle metal auditory attack. Their albums are further bolstered by a live show that has become one of the most entertaining in all of metal. Proof of Ensiferum's status as one of the most vital bands in modern metal was made apparent through their headlining slot on this year's Paganfest USA tour. The band inked the deal with Metal Blade CEO Brian Slagel during the Paganfest USA tour, and all parties are enthusiastic about new music and new possibilities."

Bassist/backing vocalist Sami Hinkka comments: "We are really looking forward to our co-operation with such a great and legendary label as Metal Blade. The next full length album should be out in early 2015. We have already started working with the new songs and it's obvious that the next album will be another step ahead for Ensiferum. More Bands Announced For NEM&HF 2013

The latest round of bands confirmed to storm the stage at New England Metal and Hardcore Festival XV has today been announced. The fresh additions to the brutal three-day event include Alleageon, Alpha & Omega, Born Low, MurderDeathKill and Dark Sermon, as well as Baltimore hardcore squad Trapped Under Ice and New Jersey’s renowned explosive tech metal practitioners The Dillinger Escape Plan.

A tour based around the fest has also been created by MassConcerts, something they’ve done for the past four years. Dubbed Mission Quest to Metal Fest, the trek was formed in order to help a few of the bands get to and from NEMHF this year. This year the tour unifies Expire, Alpha & Omega, Power Trip, Twitching Tongues, and Antagonist A.D. on a ten-date assault leading up to their individual performances at the festival.

Stated promoter Scott Lee on the formation of this built-in tour: “We are really proud of this year’s lineup, and to bring these bands together leading up to it. The tour includes Expire who played last year, California powerhouse Alpha & Omega, Power Trip who is an up-and-coming hardcore band from Texas, and Twitching Tongues. We're also very excited to have Antagonist A.D. from New Zealand; they are the band coming from the farthest away for the fest. Pretty happy to have them; we love putting foreign bands on the bill!” More...
