Morbikon (Municipal Waste) Share Aura Noir Cover
Morbikon have unveiled their rendition of Aura Noir’s “Gaping Grave Awaits.” The blackened death/thrash supergroup—featuring members of Municipal Waste, Finntroll, and more—released their cover of the 2008 track, streaming via YouTube for you now below. The band’s sophomore album, Lost Within The Astral Crypts, arrived on November 21st via Tankcrimes.

Korpiklaani Announces "Heidenfest" 2026 Tour Dates
Finnish folk metal stars Korpiklaani has announced a massive headlining tour of Europe and the UK, dubbed "Heidenfest 2026." Joining them on the trek will be Finntroll, marking the first time the two bands have toured together. Joining them to celebrate this unique event are some of their best friends and drinking partners in Heidevolk and Trollfest. To warm up the evening with all the dancing, drinking, moshing and all round good times are The Dread Crew of Oddwood. Due to prior agreements, Finntroll will miss the first 3 shows, and will be replaced by Moonsorrow.

Brutal Assault's First Day Was Almost Perfection
Brutal Assault. Have you heard of it? It’s one of the largest summer metal festivals in all of Europe. There are upwards of 150 bands that play touching on just about every heavy genre imaginable. It normally takes place during the first weekend of August and it always occurs on the grounds of an 18th century Czech military fortress located in Jaromer, Czech Republic.
Similar to Wacken, Hellfest and Graspop Metal Meeting, Brutal Assault has a very loyal contingent of fans that attend year after year from all over the globe. This was my fourth Brutal Assault and I don’t foresee myself taking a break from it anytime soon. This year’s line-up was fucking incredible. All my favorite genres were represented well and there were plenty of bands that I’ve never seen before that I was finally going to get to “check that box.”
I had nine bands marked for the first day of the four-day marathon and it began with the grindcore OGs, Terrorizer. I’ve seen them a couple of times before in different line-up variations but today’s with Pete Sandoval and David Vincent making up half of the original lineup was the best one yet. What made this set even better was they only played material from their classic masterpiece, “World Downfall.” If you were to ask me to describe what grindcore is with a single album, this would be it. Peering over at David Vincent from time to time, it’s apparent that he loves playing these songs. He just grooved to them the whole time I was there. I loved this current version of the band and I hope it continues to be a thing (R.I.P. Jesse Pintado).

Next up was legendary Los Angeles thrashers, Hirax. I’ll preface this next part with that I’m kind of old. Not AARP old, but I think older than most of you that will read this report. There’s probably been no less than fifteen or so times that I could have seen Hirax during a span of 30 years and for whatever reason, I just never got around to it. That was embarrassing to write.
Today, I hated myself even more for taking that long. They were everything that I thought they would be, but so much better. Vocalist Katon De Pena truly enjoys being on stage and he is constantly engaging the audience. The crowd that was there during their set were hardcore fans and already knew their songs by heart. This was one of several “Wow!” moments for me during the entire festival. I’m so glad I got to finally experience Hirax and it won’t be thirty years before I see them next time!

The next band on my list would play on the same stage after Hirax, but first it was time to refuel. Brutal Assault probably has the largest variety of victuals to choose from of any festival I’ve ever attended. There is something for everyone. Every dietary restriction imaginable is not an issue at Brutal Assault, you are covered. For my meal, I chose to go with what I call “Greek Lo Mein” but in actuality, it was gyro meat and noodles. However I describe it, it was carbs and meat. Just what I needed to get through the rest of the day/night.
The band Finntroll is an acquired taste. Their quirky take on blackened folk metal sets them apart from other bands that side on black or folk metal exclusively. Maybe it’s the prosthetic troll ears? Or, maybe it’s the upbeat, happy sounding riffing paired with scowling vocals? Finntroll’s sound skirts right down the middle of the two genres and it’s awesome. I’ve seen them twice before but this was my favorite set out of all of them. This stage (Obscure Stage) was too small for them in my opinion. There were people stretched out all the way to the where the festival grounds open up for the vending, portable bathrooms, and merch tents.

Brutal Assault Adds Nine More Bands
This year, the fortress will welcome Bewitched with their "pre-thrash black metal", occult thrash/black Mortuary Drape, and pure evil at top speed from Poland's Totenmesse. Also coming for the first time - from America huntress of darkness Emma Ruth Rundle, from Australia instrumental djent trio The Omnific, and from Belgium progressive stoners My Diligence.
Returning to the brutal stages will be avant-garde jazz-black Imperial Triumphant, sophisticated Sylosis, and folk-black-death trolls Finntroll.
Brutal Assault will take place in the Czech Republic at the Josefov Fortress during August 7-10, 2024.

Graspop Announces A Further 103 Bands
The organisers of Graspop Metal Meeting, one of Europe's premier metal festivals and the biggest in Belgium has announced a further 103 bands added to next year's edition of the festival. The event will take place in the town of Dessel from June 15th - 18th.

Blackened death metal trio Morbikon premiere a new single named “Deaththirst” streaming via YouTube and Spotify for you below. The track is off their impending debut studio full-length “Ov Mournful Twilight“, due out on October 28th via Tankcrimes.
That band features bassist/vocalist Philip “Land Phil” Hall, drummer Dave Witte (both of Municipal Waste fame) and vocalist Matthias “Vieth” Lillmåns (Finntroll).

Finntroll Announces European Tour With Skálmöld
After aeons of forging plans, writing new hymns and hiding from plagues, Finntroll can finally announce that they are crawling out from their caves and into the tourbus again. March 2021 Finntroll will hit mainland Europe with their new album, Vredesvävd, bringing old and new allies to the raid.

The organisers of the 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise has announced a further seven names for the event, which will be setting sail in less than a week. Joining the already impressive roster are death metal pioneers Possessed, along with traditional metal outfit Striker, groove metal outfit Once Human featuring former Machine Head and Soulfly guitarist Logan Mader, jazz fusion metal combo Without Waves, Boston power metal ensemble FirstBourne, Colombian death metal group No Raza and Belgian thrash/metalcore band Spoil Engine. This brings the number of bands up to fifty seven, with sixty in total to perform. The ship will set sail to Cozumel, Mexico on January 7th and return to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on January 11th.

Five More Bands Confirmed For 70000 Tons Of Metal
The lineup for next year's edition of the 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise draws ever closer to completion with the announcement of four more acts for the floating festival. Joining the already stacked lineup are two American thrash metal veterans, Toxik and the recently reunited Vio-Lence, the Mexican cartel of deathgrind Brujeria will also be dealing some brutality, while former Manowar guitarist Ross The Boss will also be on board, along with Canadian metal outfit, Aeternam. This brings the number of bands up to fifty, with sixty in total to perform. The ship will set sail to Cozumel, Mexico on January 7th and return to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on January 11th.

The organisers of the 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise have announced the addition of thrash metal legends Exodus and power metal veterans Seven Witches. This brings the number of bands up to forty five, with sixty in total to perform. The ship will set sail to Cozumel, Mexico on January 7th and return to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on January 11th.
