Gorguts Returns To Season Of Mist

Season of Mist has checked in with the following announcement about the return of Gorguts to the roster:

"After the return of Seth a couple weeks ago, Season of Mist wishes to express the joy of seeing one more band rejoin the fold: welcome back Gorguts! The staff is thrilled to have the Canadian technical death metal band back on the roster, 13 years after the release of cult classic ‘From Wisdom to Hate.'"

“It is with great joy that I announce the return of Gorguts to Season of Mist!” mastermind Luc Lemay comments. “Things have not always been easy these last couple of years, but now it’s all behind us and all I can say is that I’m more than eager to share this new record with all of you. Our forthcoming album will be a very detailed, dark, epic, emotional, conceptual record and Season of Mist was my first choice to be the standard-bearer for this new Gorguts opus and I must say that I am more than happy to work with them again.

“Stay tuned on the band’s websites for more updates and we’ll soon hit the stage to share this new music with you! I can never thank each of you enough, our dedicated fans, for more than 20 years of support! Thanks to you!!!!!!”

Gorguts’ upcoming fifth studio album will be released later this year on Season of Mist. Further details will be announced shortly. More...

Metal Daze: The Metalcamp Diaries, Part I

SATURDAY 8/11

6:00am. YOU’VE KNOCKED A SCREW LOOSE, a taunting Protestant voice rattles my inner skull in a booze-muddled echo as I lope across a bed of sharp stones and plunge into the frigid river just this side of bare-assed.

The full immersion drowns that pesky voice mid-sentence. Eyes open under water; I find peaceful seclusion for a few precious, bone-chilling seconds.

Confirming the diagnosis as I breach the surface and hoist myself to my feet, waist-deep, skin already tightening from the abrupt system shock, a guy on the beach mutters something to his friend, shoots me a strange glare – did I somehow manage to insult his mom? – and twirls his finger near his temple. Yep.

Whatever. I reinforce the diagnosis and thrust double horns skyward, hoping to give the appearance of a calculated, decisive, tough, metal-inspired action and not the clumsy result of a dare, drowned brain cells, and a liquid blanket.

In either case, this is Metalcamp, and what happens at Metalcamp… gets reproduced (and photographed) on Metalunderground.com.

PRC Music Issues Statement On Steeve Hurdle

Quebec label PRC Music has issued a statement about the passing of noted metal guitarist Steeve Hurdle. Steeve was 41 when he passed away on May 20th due to complications from surgery. Hurdle was last known for the two bands that he was a founding member of, Purulence and Negativa, but he first gained fame for playing guitar with Quebecois band Gorguts on its third release, "Obscura." He was also a member of Blind Witchery, Chaos and Infinite Wonder. Here is the statement that Remi from PRC Music has issued:

"Losing a friend like Steeve is a shock for me. We knew, cheered for and supported each other for the last 23 years. Steeve was wholehearted: a true musician, a true passionate being. He was gearing up for the next chapter of NEGATIVA. We were discussing it after deciding to reedit the first mini-CD: studio, promo, events, concerts, etc. We were getting ready to work together, just like in the good old days of PURULENCE. I was really excited at this perspective, but mostly, I was looking forward to sharing laughs, ideas and all these moments where you know you are at the right place, the right moment with the right person.'

Thank you for crossing my path, Steeve. Rest in peace, Brother." Rémi - PRC MUSIC

A fan page has been set up on Facebook to remember him by, and to send condolences to his family and friends. You can view pictures and videos of Steeve at PRC Music.

Triptykon To Play Party.San Festival

The organizers of the Party.San 2011 festival have issued the following announcement about more bands appearing on the bill:

"Raised from the ashes of Hellhammer and Celtic Frost by Tom Gabriel Fischer himself, PARTY.SAN 2011 is proud and honored to announce the addition of Triptykon to its expanding bill of bands. Hell literally broke loose with the release of the band's Eparistera Daimone debut. Pitch black and truly evil music for devoted fans of extreme metal.

"Gorguts from Canada recently joined the PARTY.SAN bill. A death metal dinosaur of sorts, the band formed in 1989 and, having survived a host of trends, tragedies and breakups, are still going strong today. Gorguts will present to you a technical and extremely furious death metal show you will never forget.

"Enslaved are easily among Norway’s finest bands. The progressive black/Viking metal ensemble has remained dark and innovative for their two-decade-long existence and will bring their monolithic blackness to the PARTY.SAN 2011 stage." More...

Too Much Is Never Enough: Technical Metal in 2009

Earlier in the year Metal Underground presented its annual “Best Of” awards and with his finger always on the pulse, deathbringer mentioned a new dominance in metal leading us into 2009. Maybe you’ve noticed the extra acoustic interludes, the blazing shred solos, the disjointed poly-rhythms or maybe you haven’t - but either way a cloud of progressive influence has undoubtedly emerged over the metal scene. Not just in our minds here at MU, but in the minds of fans Opeth, Cynic, Meshuggah, Nachtmystium and Ihsahn stood out with impressive 2008 releases. Even more excitement and interest has been generated by collaborations between Ihsahn and Opeth, and 2009 hasn’t let up with Mastodon’s progressive opus “Crack The Skye” and Obscura’s “Cosmogenesis” leading the charge.

So what magic is at work here aside from great prog-metal releases? Larger bands such as the explosive power metal act DragonForce and progressive groovers Mastodon have played a large part in the uprising of the pursuit of extreme talent for more mainstream metal fans - opening legions of otherwise clueless greenhorns to the bar of instrumental ability. Old hands such as Deicide, Cannibal Corpse and numerous thrash acts have also not been untouched by the progressive aura and have regained the thirst for pushing technical boundaries - a truly founding ideal of metal if ever there was one. Another force at play here is the power the internet has had in exposing technical freak shows like Necrophagist as well as many young tech-metal heads being introduced to metal and fostered through 90s progressive acts such as Tool or Dream Theater. Not enough for you? Let’s take a little trip back in time then. More...

Canada’s NEURAXIS has issued the band’s latest webisode video clip entitled Neuraxis Studio Episode #2 – Guitars, featuring footage and interviews from the recording of the band’s fifth studio record. Footage is available online at the band’s MySpace page.

“I'm very happy with how the guitar playing was captured,” added fellow guitarist Will Seghers says. “Precise, vicious and dynamic are words that come to my mind when hearing the new album." More excerpts are available in the webisode. More...

Negativa Cancel Tour Dates

NEGATIVA, the Quebec-based band featuring former GORGUTS members Steeve Hurdle (guitar, vocals) and Luc Lemay (guitar, vocals), along with Etienne Gallo (drums, AUGURY) and Miguel Valade (bass, ex-ION DISSONANCE), has issued the following update:

"We're really disappointed to announce that we have to cancel the shows scheduled from August 1-3 in Toronto, Hamilton and London. The guitarist/vocalist Big Steeve Hurdle had a back injury on Sunday, and he should rest for at least one week. We were looking forward to do these shows because they were the very first ones for the band. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a little longer before to hit the stage for the first time. As of today, we have no fixed plans about rescheduling the three dates but we'll try to make it up for our Ontario fans before the end of the year if we can. Thanks for your understanding." More...

At the end of September, expect a MySpace page for you to, at last, listen to our music." Songtitles set to appear on the mini-CD are "Chaos in Motion", "Taedium Vitae" and "Rebellion".
